Investigation Discovery has greenlit a new episode of its docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.” The new episode, “Breaking the Silence,” will premiere Sunday, April 7 and featured former Nickelodeon child stars from the early 2000s, including Drake Bell. “With ‘Breaking the Silence,’ we’re digging deeper into the crucial conversations the docuseries ignited and exploring the lingering questions left in their wake to provide further insight from the brave voices who’ve spoken out previously and those who are coming forward again,” said Jason Sarlanis, president at TNT, TBS, TruTV, ID and HLN. Since its debut, the series has been watched by more than 16 million viewers across Max, Discovery+ and ID, the largest audience of an unscripted series since Max launched.

Gordon Ramsay’s FOX cooking competition “Hell’s Kitchen” has been renewed for two more seasons. “Hell’s Kitchen was our first series with Gordon, marking the launch of one of FOX’s most successful creative partnerships ever and an important cornerstone in what has become global television’s most powerful cooking brand,” said Allison Wallach, President, Unscripted Programming at FOX Entertainment. Both seasons will be produced at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., where Ramsay’s sixth Hell’s Kitchen restaurant is located.

New performances have been added to the upcoming CMT Music Awards, airing April 7 live from Austin. Onboard are Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, Old Dominion and Parker McCollum alongside vocalist Brittney Spencer.

AXS TV and Spectrum’s Band Together for Music Education initiative will continue for another year. Ten more schools in Spectrum service areas will receive $10,000 grants from AXS TV to support music education, with the first awarded to Heart of LA – HOLA on March 29. “Music education is so important for a child’s growth and development, providing untold benefits that will positively impact them for the rest of their lives,” said AXS TV President Andy Schuon. “AXS TV celebrates music’s rich history, and we’re proud to continue our partnership with Spectrum to bring much-needed funds and resources to these incredible music programs.”

Moonbug Entertainment is launching its second linear channel, “Blippi & Friends,” a 24/7 channel named for Moonbug’s live-action brand, catering to preschool-aged children. The channel will feature a variety of “Blippi” spinoffs, including “Blippi Visits,” “Blippi Draws” and the “Blippi Game Show” along with other popular children’s shows like “CoComelon” and “Arpo.”

Keshet International shared its upcoming spring schedule ahead of MipTV in Cannes. Additionally, the content producer and distributor has acquired two new dramas being featured in the MIP Drama Showcase: crime drama “Palo Alto” and sci-fi thriller “Valhalla Project.” Keshet International will also relaunch one of its most successful game shows, “Boom!”, reimagined as “Boom! Heist Mode.”

Bavaria Fiction is launching a new documentary brand, ICON DOCS, to create films and series for streaming, theaters and television. Head of documentaries and executive producer Emanuel Rotstein will lead the unit. “ICON DOCS stands for state-of-the-art projects with a distinctive high production and news value,” he said. “We want to move people, shake them up and build bridges between cultures.”

Linear channel and streamer MGM+ has ordered a six-episode limited series for “Earth Abides,” based on George R. Stewart’s sci-fi novel of the same name. The series, which begins production in Vancouver on April 8, will star “Vikings’” Alexander Ludwig and will be helmed by showrunner Todd Komarnicki. “It’s very special to reintroduce Earth Abides to fans of George Stewart’s seminal work of science fiction, as well as to a new generation,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Leap Media Group has added “The Travel Detective” to its slate of travel, cooking and business series. The 30-minute TV series is hosted by travel journalist Peter Greenberg and offers tips like how to book hotel rooms and getting through airport security quickly. “Peter is a welcome addition to Leap’s collection of exceptional storytellers who have adopted the company’s ad-supported syndication model as a component of their distribution plan,” said Leap Media Group principal Chris Pizzurro.

“The Pitt,” a 15-episode drama starring and executive produced by Noah Wyle, was given the straight-to-series order by Max. The series examines the challenges today’s health care workers face in a Pittsburgh hospital. “Collaborating with the visionary talents of John Wells, R. Scott Gemmill, and Noah Wyle to develop this new series has already been an exhilarating process,” said Head of Max Original Programming Sarah Aubrey. “Their passion, creativity, and dedication to storytelling elevate every aspect of the project.”

Amazon Freevee is debuting a new competition series, “The Goat,” to determine who is the greatest reality star of all time. Hosted by Daniel Tosh, 14 reality stars from franchises like “The Bachelor,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Survivor” compete for the title. The first three episodes will air on May 9 on Prime Video worldwide and on Freevee in the U.S., U.K., Germany and Austria.

Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington will star in and executive produce a new Apple TV+ limited series, “Imperfect Women.” The psychological thriller is a co-production between 20th Television and Apple Studios.

STREAMING

A new documentary about The Beach Boys will premiere on Disney+ on May 24. It will celebrate the brand’s achievements while also showcasing never-before-seen footage and interviews with the band.

Audible and Amazon MGM Studios are developing TV series based on a slate of podcasts and other audio-only content. Properties in development = “The Prophecy,” “Hot White Heist,” “Oracle” and “Nut Jobs” and more.

Tubi has acquired rights to Max original series “Gordita Chronicles.” All 10 episodes of the series will become available on March 29.

TECH TALK

Fans want both immersive gaming worlds and compelling storytelling across TV and film, according to data from Fandom’s platform and a new study, Inside Entertainment: The Entertainment & Gaming Tug of War. Top takeaways for advertisers and marketers include:
· There is a symbiotic relationship between the gaming and entertainment industries. Each serves different emotional needs and can complement each other.
· “Switchers” refers to the audience moving away from watching movies and binging TV shows in their free time to do other activities. There is an opportunity to re-engage this audience and pull them back into the ecosystem with new content strategies, like book-to-game or book-to-film cross over adaptations.
· Defining a gaming-specific fan strategy by finding niche pockets, like targeting drama fans or creating book adaptations, is key for reaching high affinity audiences at scale.

“Every industry analysis refers to the battle for fans’ attention across entertainment and gaming but we’ve found that it’s not an either or. In fact, combined, entertainment and gaming experiences strengthen fan connection and deliver incremental engagement,” said Stephanie Fried, CMO of Fandom. “Understanding the interplay between these mediums is key to building authentic and enduring fan experiences; and understanding the value and role of each medium is essential for developing powerful marketing messaging to attract and retain fans.”

Eighty six percent of advertisers consider games advertising as brand safe, and 40% are set to boost spending in the coming year. That’s according to a new study released during IAB Playfronts. “Changing the Game: How Games Advertising Powers Performance Today” also reveals that 85% of advertisers recognize games advertising as a premium, high-quality platform for promoting their brands, and 90% attested to its effectiveness in reaching valuable, hard-to-reach audiences with relevant messaging. “This is the first large-scale quantitative analysis of brands and agencies with experience purchasing games advertising,” said Jack Koch, SVP, Research & Insights, IAB. “Marketers can no longer afford to ignore this medium if they want to reach the more than 200 million U.S. consumers that play video games.”

Wurl announced BrandDiscovery, a genAI-based CTV advertising solution that enables advertisers to align their ads with content in real time. “We know emotional resonance drives positive attention for brand campaigns, leading to higher brand awareness, recall, and reduced cost per engagement for advertisers,” said Peter Crofut, VP of Business Development for Agencies and Brands at Wurl. “Now, with BrandDiscovery, advertisers will have greater control over the context of their CTV ads, more easily earning the attention of viewers and, as a result, improving measured campaign outcomes.”

Entertainment and technology marketing company CTAM is expanding its StreamSafely website alongside its CTAM Canada affiliate. The company’s mission is to combat content piracy and create a centralized hub of streaming options. StreamSafely, which launched in January 2020, positions itself as the industry’s only consumer-facing anti-piracy effort.

SPORTS UPDATE

The R&A is launching One Club, a direct-to-consumer membership initiative that allows golf fans to enjoy the sport year-round. The free membership offers access to The Open, AIG Women’s Open and other R&A championships; live and non-live golf coverage on R&A TV, its new streaming service; original golf lifestyle content; a golf coaching network with top coaches; rewards and experiences, like meet-and-greets and VIP packages; competitive events and ticket opportunities.

The 4D time-slice video production company 4DREPLAY is providing immersive viewing of season opening MLB games in Korea. It kicked off its coverage with the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres two-game set at the Gochuk Dome in Seoul on March 20-21. “Our mission is to create an unprecedented viewing experience through technology,” said CEO Hongsu Jung.

FOX Sports has shared the broadcast team for the inaugural United Football League (UFL) season. Veteran broadcaster Curt Menefee will join analyst Joel Klatt on the field beginning March 30 for the Birmingham Stallions vs. Arlington Renegades game, with former NFL quarterback Brock Huard reporting from the sidelines. The second half of the day’s double-header will be overseen by play-by-play announcer Kevin Kugler with former Michigan quarter Devin Gardener as the St. Louis Battlehawks take on the Michigan Panthers, with Denver Broncos tight end Jake Butt covering the sidelines. Fox Desportes, which will feature an eight-game UFL slate tis year, will be covered by play-by-play announcer Rodolfo Landeros and analysts Jaime Motta and Jorge Carlos Mercader.

The Week 1 NFL game staged in Brazil, the first time a regular season contest is in South America, will stream exclusively on Peacock. The game will feature the Philadelphia Eagles and an opponent that will be announced at a later date, along with the kickoff time. “The viewership success of both Thursday Night Football on Prime Video and the historic wild-card game on Peacock last season are strong indicators our streaming distribution is resonating with our fans,” said Han Schroeder, EVP of media distribution for the NFL.
