Ahead of the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show, NBCUniversal unveiled One-Platform Total Audience, the media giant’s AI-driven planning and activation technology and the latest piece of its One Platform offering. NBCU also announced it will transact 50% of its business on strategic audiences in 2024, enabling brands to engage viewers wherever they consume content. One Platform Total Audience uses machine learning and predictive analytics to produce a single media plan across linear and streaming that targets specific audience segments. The technology has access to NBCU’s entire content portfolio, leveraging the company’s first-party data with advertisers’ data sets to reach consumers.

NewsNation will present special coverage of the Iowa Caucuses, “Decision Desk HQ 2024,” on January 15, co-anchored by Chris Cuomo, Dan Abrams and Elizabeth Vargas. Preceding the three-hour broadcast (8-11p) will be a special edition of “On Balance with Leland Vittert” at 7p from Des Moines, Iowa. “On Balance” will begin special coverage from the state on January 12.

Charter Communications has opened applications for its annual scholarship program for underrepresented college students in need, Spectrum Scholars. College juniors selected for the 2024-2025 program will receive a $20,000 scholarship, a Charter mentor and an opportunity for a paid 10-week internship with the company. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2024; winners will be announced in May and scholarships will be awarded in August.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Page Six launched a state-of-the-art studio in New York City that will produce daily hosted video segments, including celebrity entertainment news, beauty and fashion advice, and shoppable video. All video content will be published on pagesix.com, YouTube, and Page Six social handles. Media personality Astra (from iHeartMedia’s 103.5 KTU “The Beat of New York”) will serve as the new Page Six global anchor.

Amazon’s Freevee is beefing up its portfolio of 400+ FAST channels this month. Additions to the roster are “Monsters: Godzilla & Friends,” dedicated to Godzilla and monsters that have appeared in the franchise movies (January 23); and “Faithfully Funny,” focusing on British original sitcoms (January 9). Also in the lineup is a justice block from Amazon MGM Studios including “Judy Justice,” featuring “Judge Judy” Sheindlin (streaming now); “Judge & Jury,” (streaming now) and “Tribunal Justice” (streaming as of today).

Law & Crime Network has partnered with LA-based production company Mar Vista Entertainment, providing trial access and research services for their scripted feature film development.

Prime Video has given a series order to “Criminal,” based on the graphic novel by Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips. Brubaker will serve as co- showrunner for the series with author Jordan Harper.

SPORTS

The NHL season continues this week with three exclusive games on ABC, ESPN and ESPN+/Hulu, headlined by the season’s ABC Hockey Saturday debut at 1p (simulcast on ESPN+) with a matchup between the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals. On Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers take on the Chicago Blackhawks at 8:30p on ESPN+/Hulu. Thursday will see the Toronto Maple Leafs against the New York Islanders at 7p on ESPN. ESPN’s NHL weekly studio show, “The Point,” returns Thursday at 6p with host John Buccigross alongside analyst Ryan Callahan

ESPN reached a new multi-year agreement with SportsCenter anchor Kevin Negandhi, keeping the studio host onboard for the weekday sports news show as well as coverage of the Special Olympics and ABC college football and NBA draft.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Telemundo reality show “La Casa de los Famosos” has added four new celebrity housemates – Colombian-born model and beauty queen Ariadna Gutiérrez; actress, singer, dancer and model Sophie Durand; reality show star Clovis Nienow; and athlete, model, actor and entrepreneur, Fernando Lozada for its January 23 premiere.

The third and final season of Max original comedy series “Sort Of” debuts January 18 with two episodes, followed by two episodes weekly through February 8. The series is a co-production with CBC and Sphere Media.

STREAMING

Disney+ is expected to reach 205.5 million subscribers to its ad-supported offering globally by 2028, three-times that of rival Netflix. According to data from OnlyAccounts.io, about 85% of the Disney+ subscriber base will opt for the AVOD service, compared to 24% (or 63 million customers) for a similar offering from Netflix. Other streamers like Paramount+ (52.8 million AVOD-SVOD subscribers, or 60%) and HBO Max (50.9 million, or 62.8%) are expected to fare better over the four-year period. Digital TV Research expects hybrid tiers from Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Paramount+ to account for 372 million AVOD-SVOD subscribers by 2029, with combined revenue of $20 billion.

Bold Baking Network and SPACEMOB are teaming up for what they claim is the first ever 24/7 baking FAST Channel, the Bold Baking Network, co-created by YouTube star Gemma Stafford and offering a mix of shows and series from Stafford’s Bigger Bolder Baking digital channels as well as those from other baking authorities. Curated by Stafford, the network will feature content and original programming from Stafford’s own production company Taste Buds Entertainment, including baking how-to shows, travel series, product reviews, and live interactive events.

TECH TALK

The majority of ad dollars in the AI/ML marketplace are going to text-based generative AI tools (39%) and performance-optimization tools (37%), outpacing image-based generative AI (29%), according to an analysis from Advertiser Perceptions. The study found that larger advertisers are planning to spend more on average on text-based generative AI, while smaller advertisers will spend more on performance tools. Still, brand suitability concerns remain, as three in four advertisers agree that AI-generated content can result in the rapid spread of false but persuasively written information. They’re more comfortable when brand suitability can be verified, as two in three advertisers are willing to advertise within AI-generated content in this context.

RETAIL MEDIA

Delivery service Instacart is expanding its in-store retail media program with a pilot program that features digital ads on its AI-powered smart carts. The new initiative will test the ads on Caper Carts at Bristol Farms supermarkets in Southern California, with a rollout in more stores in the coming months. CPG partners Del Monte Foods, Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, and General Mills will kick off the effort. In addition to highlighting new products and brands, deals, and seasonal promotions, the ads will offer personalized product recommendations based on products customers purchase in real time. “If a customer adds ice cream cones, they might see a complementary item recommendation, like Dreyer’s ice cream,” said the company. The carts use AI-powered computer vision to enable customers to place items into the cart; when shoppint is complete, customers can check out directly from the cart.

RATINGS

CBS’ broadcast of the 81st Golden Globes on Sunday – boosted by an NFL lead-in – drew an average 9.4 million viewers, up 50% from last year.

Warner Bros. Discovery finished 2023 with 20 of the top 25 highest-rated first-year series, with TLC’s 90 Day: The Last Resort ranking as the No. 1 unscripted freshman series in prime among A25-54 and W25-54. TNT, driven by live sports telecasts from the NHL, NBA and All Elite Wrestling, grew primetime ratings by 14% for A25-54, while Adult Swim enjoyed an 11% gain in primetime versus 2022. Overall, WBD’s nearly 20 US Networks brands – including Discovery, Food Network, HGTV, Investigation Discovery, TBS, TNT, TLC, Adult Swim and OWN – accounted for almost 31% of primetime cable viewing among Adults 25-54, with an average of 127 million total viewers each month.

Havas Media announced new leadership roles within its executive suite, enhancing the roles of some officers while appointing new leadership in North America. As part of the changes COO Jorge Irizar will focus more keenly on global growth for the company’s specialty offerings – CSA (data & tech), Havas Market (eCommerce) and Havas Play (activation) across more than 70 markets and will continue to lead Converged, the network’s world-class tech stack. CEO, HMN North America Greg Walsh has been appointed to the newly created role of Global Chief Business Transformation Officer. Assuming Walsh’s previous role is Greg James, a Havas executive who most recently led the global client experience team.

After a decade at the National Association of Broadcasters, most recently as Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, Patrick McFadden will join Sinclair, Inc. as SVP Global Public Policy and Communications.

Electric Entertainment named former Manager of TV and Streaming Operations Michael Hyon Johnson as Director of Operations for ElectricNOW, its FAST channel offering.
