NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Amazon released the titles of its next ten pilots for 2014, and the list includes: The After (from X-Files Chris Carter), Bosch, Mozart In The Jungle (Moonrise Kingdom’s Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman), Transparent (United States of Tara’s Jill Soloway) and The Rebels. The five kids titles are Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street, Hardboiled Eggheads, The Jo B. & G. Raff Show, Maker Shack Agency and Wishenproof! The pilots are all available to watch on Amazon Instant Video; viewer feedback will help determine which will go to series…

Amazon also announced a new digital video advertising deal with FreeWheel. The video ad tech company’s clients include VEVO, NBC Universal, AOL, Crackle and Fox. 

MTV released Miley Cyrus: MTV Unplugged & Uncensored through its digital and mobile platforms, and the MTV App and MTV Artists App, the first time the net has released an uncensored version of its Unplugged series. The premiere of Miley Cyrus: MTV Unplugged on January 29 averaged one million total viewers and set a new digital record for the franchise, with more than 1.7 million streams in the first 24 hours.

CONTENT MEDIA

Netflix will include Scholastic‘s Clifford The Big Red Dog series in its streaming library starting on Feb. 14 (also Clifford’s birthday). Brazil’s Netflix subscribers will be able to stream the series starting in May.

Discovery’s Science Channel has a new video-focused site – Sci2-, made up of short-form films and news feeds on everything science. The site will feature Discovery Digital Networks’ Test Tube content, a streaming video feed called How It’s Made, live city cams from around the world, time-lapse feeds, footage from NASA and a vintage science experiment feed.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Fandango says The LEGO Movie is on its way to becoming the second fastest advance ticket-selling movie among animated films (surpassed only 2010’s Toy Story 3). The Warner Bros. movie is blowing past ticket sales of other animated features Frozen, Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University at the same point in the sales cycle. LEGO opens nationwide today.

ADVERTISING

Integral Ad Science unveiled a new video advertising viewability, fraud and brand safety monitoring solution technology yesterday. Nielsen customers be the first to benefit; the platform is being used in the Nielsen Online Campaigns Ratings platform.

Advertising + Data Science Congress held its annual AdsCon forum yesterday in New York City. Citibank‘s Director of Digital Insights and Marketing Effectiveness Michael Wexler spoke during the Data Disrupts panel, and later told Cynopsis that “the key to simplifying ‘big data’ is to asking the right questions in the right way.” Citibank debuted its first mobile app this week, the first of its kind to allow customers to check account information without logging in, but rather with the new Citi Mobile Snapshot feature.

Social media analytics company Shareablee measured the 20 Biggest Brand Moments on Facebook 2013, with surprising results. CEO Tania Yuki told Cynopsis, “For the first time, product-related content seriously performed, with Samsung brands dominating the ranking to own eight of the most engaging social brand moments. This means that audiences are increasingly receptive to relevant brand updates – great news as pressure for social ROI increases.Xfinity, Covergirl, Chick-Fil-A and UPS engaged audiences most successfully with human-interest stories, while Perez Hilton was the surprise number one with the biggest and most shared post of 2013 (and no, it wasn’t celebrity gossip… it was a sugar-free cookie recipe).” Adds Yuki, “We expect to see increases in ad-supported posts to gain audience attention (only six were organic), and an intensified focus on new ways to bring human-interest stories within independent brand narratives.”

EXEC MOVES

Freemantle Media North America has promoted David Luner as President of Brand Partnerships and Franchise Management. Luner was in the interim role of Executive Vice President of Brand Partnerships and Franchise Management during the integration of Freemantle Media Enterprises.

The Exchange Lab appointed former Microsoft and BBC Worldwide Senior Executive Chris Dobson as the company’s newest Chariman.

Max Ramirez has been promoted to Vice President Digital Media Sales for the Spanish Broadcasting System Interactive. Prior to SBS, he has held senior sales roles at companies like Batanga Media and MTV.

Male-focused media platform Complex debuted its first new series of 2014, Fashion Bros, which is part Tosh.0 and part E! talk show. With the tagline “bros before clothes” and segments like “selfie destruction,” the show features Four Pins editor Lawrence Schlossman and Complex editor James Harris chatting about current events and men’s fashion (with plenty of snarky comments). A new episode will premiere every other Thursday on Complex’s site, and the first episode can be seen at www.cynopsis.com.
