Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 5, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Smells like Upfront season. In a move to expand both its brands and ad dollars, Turner is augmenting its three Young Adults and Kids Media networks. Adult Swim will get expanded primetime hours from 8p beginning March 31, Cartoon is launching a new portfolio of original content on CartoonNetwork.com and its other digital branded platforms, and Boomerang is being rebranded as a family co-viewing network and opening to ad sales for the first time. Adult Swim, which currently airs 9p-6a, just recorded its most-watched year ever. The net will launch its new programming hour with Fox’s King of the Hill, to air at both 8p and 8:30p, followed by The Cleveland Show. Cartoon’s new digital content will also launch March 31, and include shorts, interstitials, short-form, traditional series and free gaming-all designed to augment the net’s on-air programming. “We know more and more kids today are turning to digital options for entertainment content beyond their TV screen,” said Cartoon president Stuart Snyder. Boomerang will be programmed and marketed globally to present a lineup of classic and contemporary cartoons for consistent programming appeal to family co-viewing. “Advertisers are looking for opportunities to engage and connect with audiences in a variety of ways that provide greater reach for their brands and messages,” said Donna Speciale, president of Kids and Young Adults ad sales. “These are distinct brands and this expansion will allow for additional opportunities for advertisers to reach a cross-section of demos across proven platforms.”
The Jim Henson Company is forming a new unit to develop publishing projects, some of which will be shopped for television. Jim Henson Publishing will launch in August with the Enchanted Sisters chapter-book series, being developed under the direction of Halle Stanford, EVP, children’s entertainment, author Elise Allen and character designer Paige Pooler. Targeting girls 7-9, the series will be published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books.

Nicktoons today at 8:30p launches season 2 of Wild Grinders, the animated romp inspired by pro skateboarder Rob Dyrdek’s real-life experiences. The second season continues the comic adventures of Lil Rob, Meaty and his middle school skate crew.
Stan’s story continues. Disney Channel ordered a third season of observations of a blended family by way of a canine, Dog With A Blog. Season to date the series is the top telecast Fridays at 8:30p among K2-11, K6-11 and Tweens 9-14. For 2013, it was a top five TV series among K6-11.
Qubo picked up Zodiak Kids series Sally Bollywood, which will have its U.S. premiere March 3. The series, which first launched in France in 2009, also has new pickups in countries including Brazil, India, Turkey, France and Russia.
