Cynopsis: Kids!
02.12.14

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 12, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Kidscreen News: Kids entertainment execs had lots to say at yesterday’s Kidscreen Summit in New York. Here are some highlights:

 – Don’t expect to learn details of any long-term DreamWorks Animation TV projects. “We’re not allowed to share what we’re working on because of the NetFlix model,” revealed Marjorie Cohn, head of television for the studio. “They have a completely different marketing model. It’s all about immediacy; they only want to talk about what’s coming a week or two; they don’t want people to be frustrated.”
Disney has clocked 20 million downloads and 1.5 billion streams across its Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD WATCH products launched in June, according to Laura DeVillier, VP of digital media.
Nickelodeon gets twice the engagement for its Nick App than it does on the network’s website, said James Stephenson, SVP, content development for digital media. To date, there have been 6.5 million installs of the app, and its irreverent Do Not Touch button has been touched 150 million times.
– Look for Sprout to release original content as apps before, or without, linear TV companions, said SVP programming Andrew Beecham.
Amazon Studios has its eye on Nickelodeon as it prepares to enter the K6-11 original content market. “With Nick content we know which programs rise to the top,” said Tara Sorenson, head of kids programming.
– Ironic. Amazon Studios is not focusing yet on toy and merchandise sales as it develops preschool properties. In fact, one of its preschool shows will launch without a toy partner, Sorenson said.
 – A sign of changing distribution times: “We were recently approached for the first time by a big toy company that said, ‘If you launch a show on NetFlix we will be your master toy partner,'” said Richard Goldsmith, EVP, global distribution, Jim Henson Co.
batteryPop, a three-month-old online network launched by former Nickelodeon execs has retained content deals for six of its short-form content series.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Sky’s the limit: Saban Brands is creating a kids property inspired by the Cirque du Soleil brand. The new partnership between Saban and Cirque du Soleil Media, brokered by CAA, includes a television series, web content, interactive content and merch. “One of the most important factors of our business philosophy is to examine the creative challenge it presents,” said Jacques Methe, president of Cirque du Soleil Media. “I am confident this is the start of an amazing partnership between two companies with similar artistic values.”

New episodes of Ben 10 Omniverse are back on Cartoon Network starting Saturday, Feb. 15 at 9a.

Disney Channel goes back to the drawing board Monday, March 3 at 5p, for the debut of Win, Lose or Draw. Disney Channel and Disney XD stars team up with kid contestants to compete in the battle of drawing skills hosted by Justin Willman (Cupcake Wars). The latest revisit of the game ditches the drawing pad for motion control illustration and interactive screen displays. Exec-produced by Scott St. John (Deal or No Deal) and produced by Summerdale Productions in association with ABC Media Group, the series’ preview ep that aired Jan. 17 was the day’s top telecast in its time period across K2-11, K6-11 and Tweens 9-14.

Grab your flashlight. Spooksville, based on the book series by Christopher Pike, makes its midseason return to Hub Network on Saturday, March 8 at 5p ET/2p PT.

Sofia the First, second season, debuts on Disney Channel Friday, March 7 at 9:30a. The series was 2013’s No. 1 TV series among Girls 2-5 and the No. 2 cable series among K2-5. A few special episodes are planned this season. Snow White appears April 4, and other princesses – including Mulan, Tiana and Rapunzel – will also stop by. Guest voice cast for season two includes Alyson Hannigan, Ginnifer Goodwin and Melissa Rauch.

More power to Saban, which unleashes another generation of Power Rangers Power Rangers Dino Charge on Nickelodeon in 2015. Bandai America will continue to act as the global master toy licensee for the franchise, creating a new dinosaur themed product line.

BabyFirst is adding two new series to its summer lineup: iconic series Jay Jay the Jet Plane (Porchlight Entertainment) and Mitten the Kitten, an original live-action song and dance show that features popular BabyFirst characters. Additionally, the network is bringing back a new season of Juno Baby, the Emmy-winning musical series that combines original music with puppet characters.

Sonic Boom has gone from working title to official name for the new animated TV series featuring the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog, plus videogames for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and a toy line. TV series is co-produced by Sega of America and OuiDO! Productions, and will debut on Cartoon Network in the U.S. and on Canal J and Gulli in France in 2014-15.

Nickelodeon‘s new animated literacy series Wallykazam! earned Nick its highest-rated premiere with K2-5 in almost 10 years on Feb. 3. The series airs weekdays at 1p.

The Fred Rogers Company announced a second season of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood for PBS Kids. Twenty-five new episodes are planned for the animated series, which debuted in 2012. The new episodes will begin airing later this year.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Teletoon Canada and ABC3 Australia are already onboard as broadcast partners for the animated series Winston Steinburger and Sir Dudley Ding Dong, from eOne Family, created in conjunction with Sticky Pictures. The show, in development and slated to debut in 2016, is aimed at kids 6-12 and follows the hijinks of three mismatched galaxy-exploring friends.

U.K. indie Acamar Films is working with Irish animation studio Brown Bag Films and London-based Tandem Films on new animated series Bing Bunny, based on the books by author and illustrator Ted Dewan. Acamar will be launching the new show with initial episodes available to view at MIPTV.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Disney/ABC Television Group, First Book and Disney Publishing Worldwide are running a cross-channel Literacy Campaign through March 31 to champion children’s literacy and provide books and educational resources to programs, schools and organizations serving children from low-income families. The campaign, “The Magic of Storytelling,” is being touted on social media, online, on radio, and on television via PSAs. Additionally, ABC’s Good Morning America will feature hosts talking about their favorite books.

DIGITAL UPDATE

After the successful launch of its Nick App, Nickelodeon is developing a Nick Jr. App for younger fans. “We’ve had success in the preschool apps we’ve launched so far but it’s not like a TV app, where it’s whole new experience that brings something new and creative in to how to find the content,” says James Stephenson, Nick SVP, content development for digital media.

Loonette and Molly are off the couch and into the digital age. Radical Sheep Productions and Sticky Brain Studios are bringing The Big Comfy Couch online 20 years after the preschool series launched, with a website, mobile apps, and an ebook to complement the show’s 100 eps.

Disney Interactive and Google have teamed up to premiere Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story, a 38-minute stop-motion animated film exclusively available on Google Play. After users view the free film, they are able to unlock a second short, Cranes in Love and access a digital Valentine’s experience online. The film is also receiving a limited release at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, FL.
