Apple and Google are teaming on a platform to enable contact tracing to identify people who have been exposed to the coronavirus. After releasing interfaces next month built on existing public health apps that can work on iOS or Android systems, the companies will focus on a more comprehensive platform to which users will be able to opt in. “Privacy, transparency, and consent are of utmost importance in this effort,” the companies stated. “We will openly publish information about our work for others to analyze.”

Microsoft Teams set a daily record of 2.7 billion meeting minutes in one day on March 31, tripling the record set two weeks prior. Not surprisingly, particularly large increases have come from usage of Teams on mobile devices for customers in education and government-related industries.

The coronavirus pandemic prompted Publicis Groupe to launch AI platform Marcel, a management product originally slated to debut globally in June. Features include job listings; “Gigs,” which offers project-based work; a partnership with meditation app Headspace; and “Daily Digest,” a roundup of information related to COVID-19. Within two days, there was 53% adoption in the US, boosted by the company’s pledge to donate $10 per sign-up to the World Health Foundation’s COVID-19 Responsd Fund. A beta version of Marcel was introduced in the UK last year.

Facebook sued the founder of LeadCloak for allegedly offering a cloaking service that lets advertisers hide their true landing pages from Facebook’s automated systems. Basant Gajjar is accused of charging between $399 and $1999 per month for the service. “Defendant enabled and supported Facebook advertisers in circumventing Facebook’s automated ad review process and other enforcement systems. Through his actions, defendant misrepresented certain ads’ true landing page to plaintiffs, and as a result, defendant facilitated and supported evading plaintiffs’ ad review system,” said the complaint, filed in US District Court in San Francisco.

In more Facebook news, the social media giant has added Quiet Mode, “to help you focus on your family and friends, sleep without distraction or manage how you spend your time at home,” explained the company in a blog post. Facebook also added shortcuts to Notification Settings and News Feed Preferences to control the types of posts in users’ News Feeds.

Walgreens is expanding its telehealth program to include a COVID-19 risk assessment, powered by Microsoft Healthcare Bot, that runs on Microsoft Azure. Users can assess their risk of coronavirus based on CDC guidelines. The use of the Walgreens mobile app has jumped 22% over last year, as more patients turn to digital health services during the pandemic.

Broadband consumption is showing indications of reaching a plateau in markets that have been quarantined during the coronavirus pandemic, according to OpenVault. Following three weeks of double-digit percentage growth, the total downstream data usage in those markets with shelter-at-home policies declined 5.80% during the week of March 30-April 3 when compared to the previous week. Overall data usage growth in quarantined markets is 33.1%, measured against OpenVault’s January 2020 usage benchmarks. “It’s too early to say that the industry has weathered the storm of additional usage, but signs point to the greatest surge of growth by far as being behind us,” said Mark Trudeau, CEO and founder of OpenVault. “Operators will need to keep close eyes on any incremental increases – particularly during peak hours and in the upstream – as well as the impact of new quarantines in additional markets, but their networks seem in the meantime to be well-prepared to handle this increased data consumption.”

CNN acquired the assets of Canopy, which it described as a “personalization architecture company,” to help with the development of upcoming news and information platform NewsCo. “This acquisition enables us to light up in a single transaction a proven, best-in-class team whose deep knowledge and skill sets would’ve taken many months or even years to assemble,” said CNN EVP and chief digital officer Andrew Morse. “Canopy’s culture of fast-cycle, iterative software and product development will enable us to more rapidly realize our ambitions and deliver against our goals.”

Sony has invested $400 million in Bilibili, a Chinese video-sharing site. “The strategic investment and business cooperation further align our goals to bring best-in-class content offerings and services to our users, as we increase our domestic stronghold in animation and mobile games,” said Rui Chen, CEO and chairman of Bilibili. “We look forward to joining efforts on a broader scale to fulfill the tremendous and growing entertainment needs in China.”

Video software provider Synamedia secured a multi-year contract with Vodafone Group that includes the Infinite video platform, security solutions and end-to-end integration services. In addition, Synamedia will be integrating the recently acquired Unitymedia cable TV platform and set-top boxes with the Vodafone GigaTV product in Germany.

No-pain knockouts: FaceBank Group, Floyd Mayweather and ONE Entertainment Group formed a joint venture to create and manage the retired boxing champ’s digital likeness. One project in the works pits Mayweather’s digital likeness against other boxing legends in virtual match-ups, which will be exclusive to live TV streaming platform fuboTV and pay-per-view partners to be announced.

ODMedia Group announced a new partnership with MediaCloud Networks that will expand the company’s services by setting up an official content aggregation and processing hub in the South African region to service Netflix over-flow requirements.

STREAMING

Disney+ has shot to 50 million subs worldwide, five months after launch in the US. Over the last two weeks, the service became available in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, India, Spain and Switzerland.

Gaming network VENN has set July as its launch date, with original programming currently in development covering reality, news, competition, late night, music and more. VENN (Videogame Entertainment and News Network) had originally planned a later launch, but with video games and TV viewing on the rise, made the decision to ramp up early.

Wurl, provider of streaming video distribution and advertising services for connected TV, announced it now carries more than 400 streaming channels. The newest channels to join come from A+E Networks, AMC Networks, Bloomberg Media, Endemol Shine Group, Game Show Network, Janson Media, and Travelxp, among others. “Crossing 400 channels on the Wurl Network is an important milestone, but it’s just a start,” said Sean Doherty, Wurl’s CEO. “Our top priority is to keep all players across our global CTV ecosystem connected, including over 100 million viewers who depend on the Wurl Network to deliver the latest news and entertainment to their connected TVs.”

MEASUREMENT

Global information services and technology company Neustar and iSpot.tv, focused on real-time TV ad measurement and attribution, are partnering to make iSpot’s TV ad measurement data available within Neustar’s Identity Management, Multi-Touch Attribution and Unified Marketing Analytics platforms. The deal is meant to provide a granular and complete view of the full customer journey inclusive of linear, addressable, and OTT TV exposure. “This is a marketer’s holy grail. We are excited to join forces to deliver on an integrated digital and television strategy,” said Sean Muller, Founder & CEO of iSpot.tv.

HVAs (high valued audiences) appear to perform better than conventional methods of targeting media audiences, according to a test done by IPG Mediabrands’ Magna and IPG Media Lab. The test, measuring the effects of KPIs like ad recall and purchase intent, found that using HVAs was more effective than demographics, contextual targeting or a mix of demos and contextual targeting.

Comscore launched a TV ratings report that offers insights on viewership to local media within 48 hours of broadcast. Comscore QuickScore “delivers a rapid yet representative, view of local television consumption to help local television stations proactively manage schedules, and make important sales, programming and promotional decisions more quickly and confidently,” said the measurement company, which will provide preliminary ratings for the top 30 markets along with Columbus, OH and Hartford, CT.

Nielsen and E.W. Scripps inked a multiyear agreement for measurement services for the Scripps television stations. The deal includes Nielsen’s Local TV Measurement, Nielsen Scarborough, NLTV, Ad Intel, Arianna and Nielsen Grabix. “As local measurement becomes increasingly complex, we are pleased to include Nielsen data in the comprehensive suite of tools we deploy across all of our markets,” said Brian Lawlor, President of Local Media at Scripps. “With Nielsen as our partner, we are confident Scripps will continue to provide the highest level of service and expertise to our viewers, our advertising partners and the communities we serve.”

ADVERTISING

Attitudes towards advertising have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a late March study from video ad platform Unruly. When it comes to advertising, 22% of respondents said they want brands to share information on how they are supporting their staff and customers during this time, and 21% want brand advertisements to include information about COVID-19. At the same time, 17% of consumers want ads to provide a sense of continuity and normalcy, while another 17% want ads to be funny/positive in an effort to distract from what’s going on. While 53% of consumers said they prefer brands to communicate through TV ads, 42% of A18-24 would like brands to communicate through online video. “The vast majority of consumers still want to see ads, but the key to success is in the content and the way a message is conveyed,” said Terence Scroope, VP of Insight at Unruly. “The magnitude of these changes require brands to be nimble in adapting their advertising strategies to maintain and grow connections with consumers, provide support and minimize disruption to performance.”

Video ad viewers in the US are showing 32% fewer happy emotions and a 2.9% drop in attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to an analysis from AI emotion-intelligence company Realeyes. The total decline in smiles was driven mostly by video ads from industries like airlines, hotels and travel (-35%) as well as electronic and gadget brands (-60%).

DoubleVerify, the software platform for digital media measurement, data and analytics, announced an integration with Pinterest that enables advertisers to authenticate ad viewability and identify digital ad fraud and sophisticated invalid traffic across its platform. “Our mission is to give global brands the clarity and confidence they need to make digital investments wherever their audiences consume media,” said Laura Desmond, Interim CEO at DoubleVerify. “Our integration with Pinterest furthers that commitment – ensuring buyers have transparency into media quality and performance across the platform.”

A new trend tool from AnalyrticOwl offers insights on how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting advertising engagement across a range of industries. During the four-week period ending March 22, top advertising categories that significantly increased were media (48.35%), grocery, convenience and liquor stores (32.55%), charitable, religious and non-profits (20.20%), with communications (11.17%) and insurance (8.51%) representing the top five in new user website visits. Not so engaging? Politics (-32.63%) and entertainment (-22.24%) followed by travel and transportation (-19.62%), casino and lottery (-7.31%) and automotive (-7.28%), all of which were impacted by federal and state mandates related to stay at home and social distancing. “Advertisers must rethink their advertising strategy with respect to placement and messaging due to the pandemic,” said Erik Hellum, COO of Townsquare Media. “AnalyticOwl is helping us identify these key trends and create new media strategies for our advertising partners based on real-time data.”
