Cynopsis: Kids!
01.08.14

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 8, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

LAS VEGAS–Greetings from CES, where everyone gets to feel like a kid in a candy store for a few days. Here’s what you need to know: Scholastic Media and Intel are designing interactive gaming content for kids and families that will feature Intel’s RealSense technology, enabling voice and gesture interaction. The companies demo’d content featuring Scholastic franchises Clifford the Big Red Dog and I Spy, including Scholastic’s new Clifford’s Reading Adventures interactive game that demonstrates the portable all-in-one PC’s ability to create more natural human interaction and immersive experiences, and the I Spy Challenger, a first of its kind interactive multiplayer board game that promotes collaborative play for kids ages 6 and up. Both will be available for Windows Desktop and Windows Metro; other titles are in development…  Techno Source and KD Interactive are releasing a Kurio-branded phone especially for kids. The phone features parental controls including app management, time control and an Internet filtering system.

TIME OUT WITH… FUHU’s JIM MITCHELL

The new partnership between DreamWorks Animation and kids tablet developer Fuhu runs deep and wide. CynKids was treated to a private demo of the DreamTab Android-based tablet packed with more than 180 new features including the Blue Morpho operating system that includes the first COPPA-compliant social networking app for kids, adaptive common core lessons for pre-K through 6th grade, interactions with DreamWorks characters, NFC technology, and a parentally curated digital content distribution platform. Among new accessories Fuhu will roll out in 2014 for its nabi and DreamTab tablets are an infrared night vision camera and a Bluetooth-enabled karaoke machine…

The DreamTab hits retail this spring, available in 8- and 12-inch versions with a starting price under $300, and a 24-inch “second screen” for a more collaborative experience. Retailers are champing at the bit. CEO Jim Mitchell details the DreamWorks deal and Fuhu’s formula for dominating the kids tablet category. Here’s Jim in his own words on…

The Fuhu formula

Parents really only had only two options before now: They could either get their child an [electronic] toy, like a Leap Pad, which meant buying a lot of cartridges and replacing them every few months or so. Or they could give their kids their iPad or Samsung tablet and risk it getting dropped or having things deleted that they didn’t want them to. We take products that are good enough for adults, because kids will figure that out immediately, and make them appropriate for kids. That’s why the nabi 2 launched with an nvidia tegra 3 quad core processor [the DreamTab will be powered by Intel], essentially the same processor as Google uses, but we made it safe for kids with the nabi overlay, parental controls and content. Then, we make sure it’s Toyatic. It’s not just a toy, but we provide a whole ecosystem, so kids can personalize their tablet and have an emotional connection. There’s a grid on the back where they can attach kinabis, which are like Jibbitz for Crocs, and they can change out the bumpers.

The Dream team

We were looking for a new type of relationship. We can cut deals with Warner Bros., Disney and Nickelodeon to get their content on our tablets but we were looking to create content from the ground up. DreamWorks isn’t just a great animation company; their roots are in technology. I think they looked at us because we are focused 100% on kids. Yes, they can put content on Netflix just like they push Dragons content on Cartoon Network and Penguins on Nickelodeon. But they don’t have a TV station; they don’t have a hardware company. They’ve completely revamped their consumer products group, and they need an ecosystem. We are the perfect match.

Content from the ground up

We wanted to push the envelope on kids learning to draw and animate, and so did Jeffrey Katzenberg. So they filmed their actual animators, who sit down one-on-one in video tutorials and show you how to draw and animate. The artists who created characters for Kung Fu Panda and the new Turbo movie show you how to draw, not just by tracing and connecting dots.

New tools of the trade

Because we’re using a professional to teach a child how to draw, we needed to give the child professional tools. So we’re offering a new kind of stylus [by Wacom] that doesn’t just draw one simple line. If you put more pressure, the line becomes thicker, so you can sketch lightly and do shading. And the device has to be capable of understanding the stylus, which it is.

But wait, there’s more…

We put in controls so parents can help manage the time their child spends on the tablet. But the feedback we’ve gotten from moms and dads is they don’t always want to be the bad guys. So DreamWorks created interstitials-starting with the heritage characters from Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Madagascar-where characters come on the screen talk directly to the kids and tell them. It’s time to go study, take a break, and we’ll be right here when you get back. They were created with the producers of the motion pictures with the real animators and the same voices. So now parents aren’t the bad guys. They can say, “Hey, the penguins told you to go study, not me.”

Making connections

Our COPPA-compliant social network, nabi connect, allows kids to IM each other, share photos and videos, and interact not only with other tablets but also with cell phones. The connection is always one-to-one, the child is never identified by a picture always but by a character or icon, and the network doesn’t include a name. Parents have to approve each connection, and they can monitor all the IMs.

Retail response
Whereas other kids electronics are sold in the toy department, nabis are in the electronics section. Kids want to buy their tablets where mom and dad are buying theirs; not where their little sister is buying her Barbies.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Hub Network is wasting no time with its push into original movies this year. Original Family Movie Stan Lee’s Mighty 7 premieres Saturday, Feb. 1, at 8p ET/5p PT, with a big voice cast including Sean Astin, Jim Belushi, Mayim Bialik, Darren Criss and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The animated movie is the first in a Hub trilogy from Stan Lee Comics, the joint venture among Genius Brands International, Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment and Archie Comics. In the 90-minute first installment, Lee stars as an animated version of himself, a legendary superhero creator.

It’s farewell to The Lab Rats for another season. Disney XD will air the season 2 finale Monday, Jan. 13, at 9p.

Cynopsis Media is excited to announce our ratings analysis, web analytics, and multi-platform buying themed Boot Camp to take place on February 11 at the Yale Club in NYC. Learn more & register here.

PRODUCTION NOTES

ABC Family is rewinding its laugh track. Aside from picking up the previously announced half-hour comedy series Mystery Girls, starring and exec-produced by Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth, the net is adding half-hour Young & Hungry, starring Emily Osment, from exec producer Ashley Tisdale. Production on both series will begin in LA early this year; both are slated to premiere later in 2014.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Disney closed out 2013 with the top-grossing Broadway show of the year, as The Lion King rang up $96.9 million. The musical, which originally opened in 1997, in 2012 surpassed The Phantom of the Opera as the highest-grossing show in Broadway history, according to the LA Times. It roared by the $1 billion mark at the Broadway box office in October.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Toon Goggles’ lineup of streaming kids and family content is now available through WD’s WD TV Live versatile media players. “WD is a key partner for us as we expand internationally,” said Stephen Hodge, Toon Goggles managing director.

Hearst‘s relaunch of its Seventeen magazine YouTube Channel on Jan. 27 with partner AwesomenessTV is a sign of more big brands staking their ground on the platform. This from Margaret Laney, AwesomenessTV CMO, who told a CES Digital Hollywood panel that brands are thinking of YouTube “as a big fan club.” AwesomenessTV is programming Seventeen‘s YouTube presence, to include original shows and tutorials. Laney also said YouTube advertising will be on the rise this year. “Brands realize there are so many eyeballs there. It’s not only a place to get seen, but to drive engagement. And it’s also pretty cheap compared to network television.”

Sparks fly on the Island of Sodor for Thomas the Tank and his engine friends in six new episodes of Thomas & Friends: Spills & Thrills, headed to video on demand on March 4 from Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment.

GAMES & APPS

Cupcake Digital this week unleashes the official app for The Nut Job movie. The app features an interactive story based on the animated film during which Surly the squirrel gets kicked out of the park and heads to the big city, where he becomes an unlikely hero. Open Road Films will release The Nut Job movie nationwide on Jan. 17.

LICENSING

Global Pursuit Co. has been named exclusive licensing agent and promotions representative for the Albert Einstein brand in Greater China, Southeast Asia and India by Corbis Entertainment’s rights representation group, GreenLight. Global Pursuit will develop appropriate licensed consumer products for kids and adults across a broad range of categories, as well as promotions utilizing the famous persona, which includes his name, voice, signature, photographs, likeness and images.

AG Properties is partnering with Brazilian retailer Lojas Riachuelo to carry Strawberry Shortcake children’s apparel, bedding and accessories in its 182 stores throughout the country. The new partnership was negotiated by Exim Licensing Group, licensing agency for AGP in Brazil.
