Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01.06.14
Good morning. It’s Monday, January 6, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
DreamWorks Animation and Fuhu, creator of the Nabi line of kids tablets, have partnered up for a co-branded DreamTab tablet set to be unveiled at CES tomorrow. The tablet will include drawing tutorials from top DreamWorks animators, and character integrations throughout the user interface (like the Madagascar penguins reminding kids it’s time to power down). Fuhu CEO Jim Mitchell told Cynopsis, “[DreamWorks] can put content on Netflix, on Cartoon Network or on Nickelodeon, but they don’t have a TV station. We provide a whole ecosystem.” The tablet will hit shelves in the spring in both eight and twelve inch versions, starting at less than $300.

HGTV New Years Day programming, which featured live commercial-free coverage of the 125th Tournament of Roses Parade and a hosted Twitter chat, exceeded the network’s best weekly social ratings, with #HGTVNewYear and #HGTV receiving 26,500 mentions, and @HGTV handle at 11,000 mentions. HGTV was ranked the top cable network for New Years day according to Twitter TV Unique Audience data, after 1.96 million people saw tweets from the network displayed during the parade programming.
Unruly released its Top Ten Social Video Trends for 2014 on Friday, and COO Sarah Wood provided a few insights on the top picks:
1. New tools will emerge to help real-time marketers become more ‘agile’
“More brands [will] become newsrooms for their niche. It will lead to greater investment in content discovery, content curation and content creation as brands vie with each other for consumers’ share of mind on social platforms.”
2. Brands will explore the wearable tech marketing opportunity
3. Mobile will truly become the first screen
“Mobile video is predicted to increase 25-fold between 2011 and 2016, accounting for over 70 percent of total mobile data traffic by the end of the forecast period, according to Cisco.”
4. The Prankvert will make way for the Trackvert
“There have been a lot more ads which could arguably be identified as both a music video and a full-blown ad. We expect to see a lot more that push the boundaries [in that way].”
5.Social video will amplify TV spend and demand TV budgets
6. Brands will question the value of a view
“The value of a video view will come under huge scrutiny in 2014, as more and more brands will want guaranteed viewability. And the main purpose of digital video will change from purely brand awareness to other metrics further down the funnel. It’s not just about YouTube now.”
7. Big data will be cut down to size
8. Facebook will shake up the video ecosystem
“It’s a game-changing move by the social network, with Morgan Stanley predicting Facebook video ads could be worth $1billion to the social media giant by the end of 2014. That figure could rocket to $5.5 billion by 2019.”
9. More brands will play the long game with short form video platforms
“We’ll see platforms such as Vine and Instagram being integrated more meaningfully into marketing programs. New players like Snapchat, Line and Keek will also have their say.”
10. Brands will make it big in Brazil (The World Cup)
Vine is growing – users can now “like” and share videos and see their home feed on a new Web version of the video-sharing social net. Full profiles let users browse each other’s catalogues, and a new feature called TV Mode allows them to view Vine videos in sequence, on a full computer screen.
YouTube named the top ten most shared videos in December, and the list includes plenty of holiday spots:

02) YouTube Rewind: 588,105 shares
03) Turkish Airlines Kobe v. Messi: 383,939 shares
04) Kmart Show Your Joe: 380,395 shares
05) Apple Misunderstood: 366,155 shares
06) Volvo Trucks The Epic Split: 301,477 shares
07) Friskies Grumpy Cat Hard To Be A Cat At Christmas: 298,541 shares

Women are pinning more than ever, according to a new Pew Research study showing one-third of U.S. women use Pinterest. The study found that 20 percent of all U.S. adults use Pinterest, up from 15 percent last year. Only eight percent of men use Pinterest, but that’s still up from last year’s five percent. Using these figures, Pinterest’s user base beats out Instagram and Twitter, but all three still lag far behind Facebook’s numbers, according to Mashable. Pinterest has not officially released data on its users; Pew surveyed the data from almost 2,000 internet users.

Maybe it’s not teleportation, but MIT Media Lab’s Tangible Media Group invention may be the closest thing to it that currently exists. Those behind the “tangible user interface” created a video showing how the invention allows a person in one location to move an object somewhere else. How does it do that? By using a “depth-sensing camera” to send signals being controlled by a person elsewhere to a screen to manipulate an object on top. MIT plans to explore the technology for maps, GPS and the simply incredible ability to move objects anywhere without actually… being there. Check out the demonstration at www.cynopsis.com.
