YouTube superstar Grace “It’s Grace” Helbig was excited to speak at NATPE on Tuesday, thrilled about her upcoming movie (Camp Takota, from Michael Goldfine’s RockStream Studios) – and, as someone who’s had control over the content she’s produced in the past, a little nervous about a potential variety/talk show (“We’re sculpting it”) on E! But not too nervous. “There is trepidation,” Helbig allows, “but I see it as a way to show new content on a different platform. E! really understands the vibe and the personality. It’s like It’s Grace – but with a budget.” Helbig is also working on an interview video podcast with YouTube, tentatively called “Not too Deep.”
“The market’s going well,” said YuMe‘s Vamshi Sriperumbudur, from the shade of a Fontainebleau cabana at NATPE. The VP of platform marketing for the digital video brand company, one of many digital companies taking a seat at the NATPE table, pointed to research showing that second and third screens can strengthen, not diminish, the impact of TV advertising, explaining, “The impact of a brand is higher when it is viewed on multiple screens, versus seeing it multiple times on television.”
WWE Networks will officially go completely digital on Feb. 24, launching live on every device connected to the web. Adweek reports the network is the first to make the total transition from cable TV to over-the-top, and will charging $9.99 per subscription every month. Linear shows Raw, Main Event and Smackdown will continue to air on the USA Network, Ion and Syfy.
Apple TV is debuting its first branded digital channel, Red Bull TV, which will provide action-sports coverage distributed by the energy drink company Red Bull. Red Bull TV originally launched in 2010, and is also available online, on Apple and Android apps, Google Chromecast, Samsung Smart TVs, and Red Bull’s YouTube channel.
Freemantle Media International announced a deal with digital entertainment network Young Hollywood yesterday, giving FMI exclusive distribution rights for all of YH’s half hour and hour programming. FMI already had rights to Young Hollywood’s Greatest and Young Hollywood Presents Evolution Of.

Shazam is now employing the TMS On Entertainment data platform to provide a better second screen app for its users. The entertainment navigation system will use Shazam’s audio content recognition technology to identify what TV show a user is watching, and then provide related material, such as cast and program information. Shazam is free to download on iTunes, Google Play and the Amazon App Store.

International Data Corporation (IDC) released data showing a billion smartphones were shipped in 2013, an increase of more than 38 percent from the 725.3 million devices shipped in 2012. Mashable reports the phablet (screens five inches or greater) is transforming the market; representing 18 percent of the smartphone market, this year’s phablet sales could hit 25 percent. Samsung and Apple lead the smartphone vendors.
At its quarter earnings call, Apple announced that it broke the record for the number of iPhones sold: 51 million, compared to 47.8 million a year ago. The tech giant also noted that it sold 26 million iPads, and expected revenue between $42-44 billion. Mobile Marketer reports the U.S. iOS market dropped 5.8 percent at the end of 2013, while Android grew 4.4 percent, according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Discovery Digital Networks has promoted Tom Lofthouse to Senior Vice President of Programming. Previously, Lofthouse was the networks Vice President of Programming and Production. Discovery Digital Networks includes Revision3, TestTube, Animalist, The DeFranco Network and SourceFed.
USA Network has named Jeffrey Kaufman the new Senior Vice President of Digital. Prior to this role, he was Senior Vice President of Digital Video at Alloy Entertainment (now part of Defy Media).
