NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
 

DirecTV launched Fox Networks’ authenticated TV Everywhere services Fox Now, FXNow and Nat Geo TV Apps for its customers. DirecTV will also serve feeds of FX, FXX, FS1, FS2, National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild for out-of-home streaming on the DirecTV Everywhere platform. Additionally, starting in the first quarter in 2015, DirecTV will launch VOD content from Fox Networks on DirecTV Everywhere. Other pay TV providers that include the Fox TV Everywhere programming include Comcast, Dish Networks, Time Warner Cable, Cox, AT+T U-verse, and Verizon FIOS.
 
FCC chairman Tom Wheeler proposed a change in regulations that would have companies distributing TV online treated the same as cable and satellite providers, allowing them access to broadcast TV content. “Big company control over access to programming should not keep programs from being available on the Internet,” said Wheeler in a statement. “We propose to break that bottleneck.” Wheeler’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking is just the first step in a possible reclassification that would come too late to save Aereo, but the founder and CEO of the shuttered company, Chet Kanojia, said it would be “a real win for creators and consumers.”
 

 
CONTENT ADVERTISING
 

Fusion is teaming up with YouTube to highlight the biggest news stories of 2014 today at 9:30p ET. Fusion’s Mariana Atencio (@MarianaAtencio), Pedro Andrade (@PedroAndradeTV), Romina Puga (@RominaPuga), and Kimberly Brooks (@KimNikiaBrooks) will host the special. Maker Studios of 2014 Special aired yesterday (Sunday).
 
People Now, the daily live online show presented by Toyota on People.com, announced that Bob Harper (The Biggest Loser), Patti Stanger (Millionaire Matchmaker) and John McCarthy (Greenwich Project) will make guest appearances this week. The 20-minute program offers exclusive interviews, celebrity and entertainment updates, and news and human-interest stories Monday-Friday at 8:30a ET.
 
Carnival will run its first Super Bowl spot on February 1, but the public will steer the course. Voters can choose between four commercials produced by BBDO in Atlanta, at Carnival Marketing Challenge – a click that could win a yearly cruise for life.

WHAT MATTERED IN 2014…. & 2015 PREDICTIONS
 

The year of the “internet of things” kept the industry on its toes in 2014, from Disney’s $1 billion buy of Maker Studios, Facebook’s $19 billion Whatsapp acquisition, YouTube celebs jumping to TV, Aereo’s Supreme Court smack down to the boom in cable and broadcast network SVOD services. – IAB SVP and GM of Mobile and Video Anna Bager: “There will be a rise in original content production – often from unexpected sources. This uptick will help solve for the current ‘lack of inventory’ problem and potentially drive the industry ahead in creating better business models and further increase monetization opportunities.”
 
– Eyeview CEO and co-founder Oren Harnevo: “It’s less about how many people see an ad, and more about how relevant and engaged those people are with the ad they’re seeing. Data has given marketers insight into consumer behavior while offering brand advertising increased power in ways that we only could have dreamed about a few years ago.”
