Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 22, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The quarterly earnings for Netflix that will be announced today are expected to be strong, Forbes reports. “Analysts are expecting the company to book a profit of 65 cents a share, up from 13 cents a year ago.” Three months ago the estimate was that it would be 47 cents. The expectation for revenue in the quarter will be $1.17 billion, which is 24% higher than the same quarter a year earlier. For the whole year, Netflix is expected to announce that it pulled in $4.37 billion.

Internet Famous,” a new web series set in Pittsburgh, features a poor soul named Andy who becomes famous online when his roommate films him ranting one night. A Kickstarter campaign raised $8,500 to help fund the show.

Verizon has agreed to buy Intel’s OnCue streaming platform. The word from Deadline.com is that Intel wanted $500 million for OnCue but terms of the deal are, of course, not being released. Verizon expects to “integrate [Internet protocol]-based TV services with FiOS to further differentiate FiOS from traditional cable offerings and to reduce ongoing deployment costs,” Deadline reports.

Internet Video Archive and ThinkAnalytics have put together their extensive metadata so it can make more intelligent navigation and content recommendations for both of its audiences. The joint solution delivers personalized search and recommendations with embedded movie trailers, previews, and interviews, giving consumers more ways to discover content. The offering integrates IVA’s portfolio of promotional content with ThinkAnalytic’s ThinkTV, ThinkMovies and ThinkSports metadata libraries, giving service and content providers a comprehensive set of metadata tags covering movies, entertainment, linear EPG, VOD, OTT, and sports content.

Radio had its payola scandals back in the 1950s and now the video-game world has its own version. ArsTechnica reports that Microsoft secretly paid YouTube personalities in order to have them give positive Xbox One endorsements. The YouTubers would pick up an extra three bucks for every thousand views. As PC News points out, these are “channels that often receive hundreds of thousands or even millions of views per video.” Machinima is accused of being part of the scandal thanks to a tweet that was later deleted and a leaked email. Neither Microsoft nor Machimina has commented on the report.

PewDiePie pulled in 1.3 billion views on YouTube in the second half of last year, making him the top vieweefor that time period. He beat out Turkish music channel MU-YAP and Miley Cyrus. Swedish gamer Felix Kjellberg, the man behind PewDiePie, started the YouTube channel back in 2009 and ended last year with 19.9 million subscribers.

China apparently likes a good mystery. The word from the BBC is that Sherlock, the update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s excellent mystery tales, drew five million viewers in the first few hours it was streamed in China earlier this month. That made it the most popular show on streaming site Youku.com ever.

Netflix has a new audience. It has been added to TiVo boxes in Sweden, a month later than expected.

New research shows that DirecTV could lose up to 1.6 million subscribers if it doesn’t resolve its contract disagreement with The Weather Channel. That channel was knocked off the service on Jan. 14, right in the middle of storm-watch season. Eight percent of those polled said they would switch providers after losing The Weather Channel. An additional 22 percent of DirecTV subscribers said they would strongly consider a switch. Way down in southern Texas, DirecTV and KRGV are also having a little disagreement that may result in the subscribers to the service losing access to ABC throughout the Rio Grande Valley. A deal needs to be worked out by 1 p.m. on Thursday in order for there to be no service interruption.

Americans can’t get enough of connected devices. MRG expects that the “US installed base of Internet-connected deviceswill growto 900 million by 2017.” The installed base in America for smartphones alone grew from 88 million in 2010 to 170 million in 2012. In 2010, the average American broadband household owned five connected devices; that’s now up to more than seven. There’s also expected to be 22% growth in smart connect devices in Mexico in 2014, according to consultancy IDC. That will leave Mexico with 37 million by year’s end.

King.com Limited, the owner of Candy Crush Saga, applied for the trademark for the word “candy” when it comes to video games and clothing. The trademark was finally approved last week and now game developers that have “candy” in the title of their games on Apple‘s App Store are receiving letters; however, they come from Apple, which brings in some serious bucks of its own from the game. After all, Candy Crush makes about $1 million daily, according to Forbes.

Too bad Masters and Johnson aren’t still around to check this out. Well, world, your sex lives may have just gotten a little more interesting. The new Sex with Google Glass app allows those taking part to film themselves in action, though the video is only saved for five hours postcoitus. The app also aids folks in picking the right soundtrack to help things along.

WhatsApp has added 30 million active users to its rolls in the last month bringing the astounding number up to 430 million. As the San Francisco Chronicle points out, that’s almost double Twitter‘s portfolio. Users send 50 billion messages through WhatsApp daily. It charges 99 cents a year to use the app after the first year.

“Two of the best leadership lessons from early in my career:
If you never make mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough’ and ‘It’s always easier to push someone who’s already leaning forward.'”

Forty-six years ago today, Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In kicked off its wacky revue that helped span the careers of such folks as Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin. The series was cancelled in 1973, but not before it got Richard Nixon to come on, two months before he was elected, and try to erase the grumpy old man visual he had given America in the 1960 presidential debates with John F. Kennedy. This PR move no doubt helped plenty of future candidates use popular television programs to their advantage. Sock it to me!
