Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 18, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Break out the Chemical X. We’re just a little giddy about the upcoming Powerpuff Girls special. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are poised to again save the world before bedtime on Jan. 20 at 7:30p, in a new Cartoon Network special. The special, Dance Pantsed, will feature the original voice talent plus a special guest appearance by Beatle Ringo Starr as Fibonacci Sequins, Townsville’s most famous flamboyant mathematician. Starr also performs an original music video and song, “I Wish I Was A Powerpuff Girl.” The Emmy-winning series, created by Craig McCracken, recently celebrated its 15-year anniversary (who feels old?). Leading-up to the special premiere, Cartoon is showcasing 10 classic Powerpuff episodes during a five-hour marathon on Sunday, Jan. 19. A new mobile game launches in January where players can adopt the persona of their favorite Powerpuff Girl, fight off hordes of evil robots and unlock power upgrades to defeat the troublesome Mojo Jojo. The special is produced by Cartoon Network Studios in association with U.K.’s Passion Pictures.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

The Rabbids Invasion continues. Nickelodeon ordered up a second season of the CG-animated series, created by Ubisoft Motion Pictures based on the Ubisoft game, follows a mysterious breed of creatures known as Rabbids who create mayhem and chaos while exploring the human world. New episodes begin airing in mid-2014, and a new online content is available on Nick.com/rabbids now.

The holiday programming parade continues well past Christmas on ABC. The net will air the one-hour classics Happy New Year, Charlie Brown and Rudolph’s Shiny New Year on Monday, Dec. 30, beginning at 8p.

Disney’s western for preschoolers, Sheriff Callie’s Wild West, makes its TV debut Monday, Jan. 20, at 5p. But eager fans are already declaring the show a hit. It was the first Disney/ABC series to premiere multiple episodes online and on mobile devices before its on-air debut, and the five eps made available ranked as the most-watched series on the Watch Disney Junior app. Four more eps will roll out on the app through Jan. 7. Additionally, an 11-minute preview episode aired Friday, Dec. 13. Mandy Moore (Tangled) stars as the voice of Sheriff Callie in the music-heavy series, which utilizes folklore of the Old West to impart social skills and lessons for young kids age 2-7.

Jan. 20 is the date for PBS Kids’ one-hour Dinosaur Train special, “Nature Trackers Adventure Camp.” Four new stories about nature and adventures in varying geographic locations invite kids to learn about geography and paleontology. Clips from the show and additional stories are also available online at pbskids.org/video, on the free PBS Kids video app and on the PBS Kids Roku channel.

PRODUCTION NOTES

What happens when Disney villains procreate? Casting is under way for Descendants, the newest Disney Channel Original movie. The live-action movie introduces the modern-day teenage progeny of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and more, who ultimately question the evil that’s always been in their hearts. Current Disney darling Dove Cameron (Liv and Maddie) will play Mal, daughter of Maleficent. She’s also starring in the Disney Channel Original Movie Cloud 9, premiering Friday, Jan. 17. Emmy winner Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) is back in the director’s chair, and production is slated to begin next spring for a 2015 premiere on Disney Channel. Casting directors are Natalie Hart and Jason La Padura (High School Musical, Camp Rock, Teen Beach Movie). The script was written by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott (The Starter Wife, Runaway Bride).

Potty talk… Disney EMEA has begun production of Nina Needs to Go, an animated short-form series for preschoolers that’s set to premiere on Disney Junior in early 2014 and air in more than 150 countries worldwide. The series follows a 4-year-old Nina who often “needs to go” at the most inopportune moments and must use her initiative to overcome the obstacles between her and the nearest bathroom. Show is produced by Bristol, U.K.-based animation studio ArthurCox.

U.K. recording artist Ronan Keating will voice Postman Pat in the upcoming Postman Pat: The Movie, which will be released in in cinemas across the U.K. next May. The film is being produced by RGH Entertainment with Icon Film Distribution, Lionsgate U.K., DreamWorks Classics and Timeless Films.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Hulu is amping up its tween offerings. The streaming service acquired two short-form series from Shaftesbury‘s digital division Smokebomb: Adventure series Unlikely Heroes and musical comedy series Totally Amp’d. Both series initially debuted on Canada’s YTV.com this fall, and will debut in the States in early 2014. Unlikely Heroes is complemented by the iOS companion app Unlikely Heroes: Curse of the Crystal Cave, which features a transmedia puzzle-adventure game. Totally Amp’d stars Ashley Leggat (Life with Derek), Cristine Prosperi (Degrassi: The Next Generation) and Demetrius Joyette (Wingin’ It). A Totally Amp’d iOS companion app is also out.

Despicable Me 2 was No. 1 in AdWeek’s recent list of the top 20 sponsored ads from multimedia blogging site Tumblr. The poll measured desktop and mobile sponsored posts and Radar Ads based on reblogs and likes (or known as Tumblr’s “notes”) within the first 24 hours after an ad’s launch. The Universal Pictures’ GIF for the movie sequel scored 315,000 notes since July.

GAMES & APPS

Who’s hungry? The first collaboration between Cupcake Digital and DHX Media on a Yo Gabba Gabba! app debuts tomorrow (Dec. 19). The Party in My Tummy app, designed for preschoolers age 5 and under, stars DJ Lance and features scenarios where kids learn ways to prepare the food and then watch as the ingredients party in each character’s tummy.

Nickelodeon released a new math-focused app to complement its preschool show Team Umizoomi. The Team Umizoomi: Math Racer app offers six levels of difficulty for kids who can customize their own vehicles and control their car as they race around the track collecting coins, avoiding obstacles and enjoying pit stop challenges that combine math curriculum with fun activities such as changing a tire or turning up the engine.

Now kids can waddle around and make new friends via mobile devices. Starting this week, Disney’s Club Penguin is available in an expanded app, which rolls out the map from the online virtual world on mobile and will regularly add new locations. The app offers the option for parents to purchase optional recurring monthly memberships that work across the online and app environments. Since Disney launched the first companion app in May, it has generated one-third of new Club Penguin accounts.

Nick’s SpongeBob Moves In app gets in to the holiday spirit with new characters, buildings, recipes and decorations. In this update, a mysterious diminutive figure is turning Santa’s elves into jerks, and players need to help SpongeBob keep them happy by serving up their favorite treats to increase the town’s holiday cheer.

The Disney Animated app now contains content from the company’s newest feature film, Frozen. New features include behind-the-scenes access to concept art, character sketches and test animations. The app features interactive digital story chapters and a browse-able timeline of all 53 Disney feature animated films.

Walker Productions and Daredevil Entertainment have co-produced an iOS app featuring 32 mini games based on the CBeebies TV series Tilly and Friends.
