CONTENT MEDIA
 

Netflix and Amazon landed seven Golden Globe nominations. Netflix originals House of Cards and Orange is the New Black each reeled in three noms, and the Ricky Gervais comedy Derek nabbed one. Amazon’s Transparent received a nod for best comedy/musical series and actor Jeffrey Tambor was also nominated for best actor in a comedy/musical series for the same show. The Golden Global Awards take place on Jan. 11, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for the third time.
 
The half-hour TV series from The Fine Brothers, based on the YouTube franchise React, will premiere on Nickelodeon on Dec. 15 at 6p ET. The show will consist of kids and celebrities responding to viral videos on the web, with the first episode featuring YT’s Bethany Mota and Lia Marie Johnson along with Nick stars Mace Coronel and Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Rick, Dicky & Dawn).
 
The current season’s sixth episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee was released yesterday on Crackle platforms, taking Ali Wentworth (It’s Complicated) along for the ride. The final episode will premiere on Dec. 18 at 12p ET, and feature Jimmy Fallon.

Social video platform ooVoo and Affectiva announced a new emotional reading platform, called Intelligent Video, which businesses will be able to use for advertising and marketing campaigns, as well as product testing. "To date, video communication has really just been about one on one or multiple linear conversations,” ooVoo CEO Robert Jackman said. “Intelligent Video will allow us to layer in dynamic interpretations of emotion that will transform how that data can be  leveraged for building solutions and products."
 

 
RESEARCH
 

Twitter users are more likely to watch TV and influence what others will watch next, according to new Ipsos Media CT research. The white paper, The Twitter Effect: Understanding Twitter’s Role in TV Behaviors, looked at the role of TV influencers on social media, and specifically Twitter. The study polled adults between the ages of 18-49 who watched five or more hours of TV a week: 475 were Twitter users and 466 were non-Twitter users. Highlights include:
 
          – Twitter users are more likely to watch TV live (69 percent compared to non-users 59 percent) as well as non-traditional TV mediums (66 percent on YouTube compared to 40 percent) at least once a week.
          – Twitter users are more likely than non-users to have a traditional cable subscription (93 percent compared to 86 percent non-users) and watch TV/video across all formats (52 percent used online SVOD service compared to 35 percent).
          – Twitter users self-identify as experts in TV knowledge (44 percent) compared to non-Twitter users (32 percent).
          – Twitter users are more likely to use a second screen and create content across all social platforms on most TV shows (34 percent), compared to non-Twitter users with most TV shows (23 percent).

 

Movie theater attendance continues to drop, especially among younger digitally savvy consumers, according to a new report from Nielsen. Americans ages 12-24 (identified as digitally oriented) saw 15 percent fewer films in theaters than in 2013. On average, the demo saw 7.1 movies at a theater, a dip from 8.4 in 2013. However, movie theater attendance among the 25 and older demographic remained steady over the same period. The same group reported that they streamed movies or TV on the web 87 percent of the time, and 36 percent streamed more content than the year prior. Nielsen surveyed 4,100 people in the U.S. in September 2014.

A+E Networks Asia appointed Brad Cox as Senior Director, Content – Lifestyle & Entertainment Channels and Thomas Tan as Creative Director. Cox formerly held the senior programming positions at Active TV and ANTV. Tan was previously a creative consultant for various channels and is an author.
 
Digital Trends announced the completion of DT Home, a 6000-square-foot facility near its editorial and business headquarters in Portland, Oregon. The new space will house the editorial testing of appliances and gadgets.
