Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 21, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Music streaming service Spotify announced in a blog post that artists can now list merchandise for sale on the site. Spotify teamed with software maker Topspin to create the marketplace, free for artists who want to display items like vinyl, posters and t-shirts. The service is available in nine English-speaking countries, with plans to add language support in the future. WSJD reports Spotify is amping up its offerings in advance of the U.S. launch of competing music service Beats Music.
Paramount announced it’s cutting ties with film, opting to release all movies in digital format instead. The Los Angeles Times reports the switch means big savings: a film print costs about $2,000,compared to $100 for a digital copy on disc. The last film Paramount released in a film format was Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues; the first to be distributed entirely in digital was The Wolf of Wall Street.
Scripps Network’s digital lifestyle network Ulive.com launched two new series as part of its Healthy Awesomeness video collection: Yoga Rebel, hosted by model and yoga instructor Tara Stiles, and One Day One Change, with home improvement expert Laurie March. The videos can be viewed on the network’s site starting today.
ABC and The Academy Awards teamed to create a new web series leading up to the ceremony on March 2. Hosted by Good Morning America’s Rachel Smith, Inside the Oscars is will offer a peek at what goes into the making of the big day, from the nomination process to the broadcast. The series can be watched at Oscars.com.

Netflix subscriptions and other online TV streaming services are on the rise – and may be elbowing out premium pay-TV providers like HBO and Starz, according to a new study from market research company NPD. People signing on to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus increased from 23 percent to 27 percent from March 2012 to August 2013, says the report, while during the same period premium pay-TV service subscriptions fell from 38 percent to 32 percent. (Variety points out the study did not ask streamers if they dropped Showtime, Starz or HBO after subscribing.) Netflix had 31.1 million U.S. subscribers in Q3 of 2013, while HBO had 28.7 million, reported SNL Kagan.
Facebook is planning to produce a suite of standalone apps designed for mobile, reports The Verge. While its Poke app was a bust, Facebook’s Messenger is the most used messaging app in the U.S.
HBO announced its video service HBO Go is coming to Sony’s PlayStation 3 console, with an app for the PS4 not far behind. HBO Go, which requires a pay-TV account with HBO service, is already available on multiple platforms including the Xbox 360, Amazon Kindle Fire, Samsung Smart TVs, Apple TV, Google Chromecast and Roku.
Media and entertainment company Saloon Media announced the hire of Steve Gamester as a Producer, Paul Kilback as both a Producer and Director, and Betty Orr as Head of Production. Gamester developed and produced series including Perfect Storms: Disasters that Changed the World; Kilback produced Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan and the History program Greatest Tank Battles. Orr is known for her work with The Great Martian War, Perfect Storms and more.
French mobile advertising analytics company, S4M USA, has appointed Richard Cacciato as its U.S. General Manager. Cacciato was most recently at digital marketing company Blue Iceberg, which he co-founded.

With Super Bowl Sunday right around the corner, brands are revving their engines. Unrulynamed off a list of “video ads to watch now,” all released last week. The picks include:
- Jaguar “Rendezvous: The Set Up” – This is the automaker’s teaser for its 2014 Super Bowl campaign, its first swing at the big game.
- Squarespace “A Better Web Awaits (Big Game Teaser)” – Another Super Bowl teaser. With 2014 ads costing upwards of $4 million, it likely pays to advertise the advertisements.
- Axe “Make Love, Not War” Axe went for sentiment and surprise – and based on the million and counting views on YouTube, they’ve hit the sweet spot.
- Apple “Your Verse” – Cynopsis highlighted this evocative iPad Air ad in the Digital Spotlight last week, with Robin Williams’ speech from Dead Poets Society.
- Thinkmodo “Devil’s Due” Prankvertising is here to stay, at least according to the company known for its viral ad for the film Carrie last year – the ad attracted 30 million views in just three days. Check out the video at www.cynopsis.com.
