Time Warner is going to raise HBO’s budget for new shows, said CEO Jeff Bewkes at the UBS media conference this week, as the premium cabler faces competition from the likes of Netflix and Amazon for programming. “We’re not spending our programming money on library product. We’re doing original shows…We’ve been increasing it and we’ll keep increasing it.”
MTV could soon be singing a different tune, according to Viacom acting president and CEO Robert Bakish. Speaking at the UBS media conference, Bakish contended the net’s move from music wasn’t working. “They strayed a little bit away from music,” Bakish said. “That was a mistake.” Noting that MTV’s European channels didn’t follow their U.S. cousin’s reality and scripted path, Bakish noted, “We’ve grown share three years running…. You’ve seen what happened in the U.S.”
Also at the UBS event, AT&T head Randall Stephenson said early demand for streaming bundle DirecTV Now “has been rather dramatic,” with goals exceeding expectations, especially in apartment buildings. While acknowledging “fairly thin” margins for the $35/month bundle, Stephenson said, “The advertising opportunity here we think is rather significant.”
Beyonce led the Grammy nominee field with 9 nods, followed by Drake, Rihanna and Kanye West with 8 apiece. Awards show airs Sunday, February 12 at 8p on CBS.
There’s a new demo in town. El Rey Network announced Monday that it is expanding its focus to embrace a surging audience it calls “Strivers,” new working and middle class males not defined by traditional age and race categories but who consume more hours of linear cable TV each week than any other socioeconomic group, and spend large portions of their household incomes on categories important to advertisers. ‘We learned that the audience tuning in to El Rey Network was much broader and more diverse than just English speaking Hispanic men,” Daniel Tibbets, El Rey Network president and general manager, tells Cynopsis. “By expanding our target audience to include the working and middle class – a rapidly growing and very diverse audience- we are able to remain true to our Latino heritage while also reaching an audience that has been largely ignored by other networks.” Tibbets will explain the strategy and research behind a brand voice that’s “aspirational, authentic and inclusive” as one of the expert panelists in the December 15 Cynopsis webinar, Diversity and Inclusion: What You Need to Know to Make it Real. Registration info is here.
Duck Dynasty producers Scott and Deirdre Gurney have been placed on a “short, temporary” leave of absence by ITV America pending a financial audit related to production billing, reports TheWrap. The couple’s Gurney Productions was acquired by ITV in 2012. Craig Armstrong, in charge for now, said in a memo obtained by TheWrap, “Due to the nature of this leave of absence we cannot share all the specific details. What I can tell you is that Gurney Productions is a very important part of the ITV family and we are committed to help keep things running smoothly.”
Cartoon Network announced a new board of industry and academic experts to advise its STEAM efforts, part of a $30 million commitment in conjunction with President Obama’s Computer Science for All initiative. “Cartoon Network’s unparalleled multiplatform reach uniquely positions us to meet kids where they are and find new ways to unlock their creativity through technology,” said Christina Miller, president of Cartoon Network. “We will accelerate and expand our reach, fulfilling our goal of giving Plurals creative confidence to become the next generation of creators, animators and makers.”
We’ll drink to that! If ABC dating show The Bachelor isn’t enough of a guilty pleasure, Bachelor Wines is launching three varietals: The Fantasy Suite, One on One, and The Final Rose (ha!). Bottles are $15.95; series premiere is Monday January 2.
The Word Network, a religious net targeting African Americans, filed complaints with the FCC and the Federal Trade Commission against Comcast over reduction of its carriage. “We continuously evaluate the content we deliver to our customers,” Comcast responded. “As part of this ongoing process, we determined that The Impact Network provides a broader array of programming than The Word Network, which led us to our decision to increase Impact’s distribution. We are also continuing to carry The Word Network to millions of our customers in the Midwest and South based on its appeal in those regions.”
ZoneTV, which brings digital-first video to pay-TV homes, is licensing over 1000 videos from special interest publishing group Bonnier Corp. Content includes video from Field & Stream, Popular Science, Popular Photography, Saveur and more. “Our consumers demonstrate every day that they want to interact with us on their schedule and via their preferred platform,” said Sean Holzman, Bonnier Corp’s chief digital revenue officer. “ZoneTV gives us yet another way to extend our multi-media presence as well as providing us another way for consumers to discover our content.”
Call for Submissions: If you have special new programming or an event the weekend of December 9-10, please email [email protected] with details. Weekender comes out Thursday afternoons.
