Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 16, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Maker Studios announced a partnership with Warner Bros. Television Group’s Studio 2.0 for a new original web series, Robin Banks and the Bank Roberts on comedy hub Nacho Punch. Former executive producers of mega-hit Friends, Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen, created the heist movie spoof, starring Scrub’s Michael Mosley, 2 Broke Girls‘ Tony Cavalero and 90210‘s Josh Zuckerman. The first ten ten-minute episodes will air Wednesdays through March 19 on the Nacho Punch YouTube channel.
Huffington Post Media Group editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington spoke about “future-proofing yourself and your business” at AOL’s Adap.tv’s Worldwide Publisher Conference in New York City yesterday. “I don’t remember just brushing my teeth without checking my phone or talking to my business,” she admitted. “We are in a constant state of breathlessness, and this is not good for creativity.” Huffington also discussed the state of the industry. “Social is the new front page,” said the digital media titan, noting out that to get people to share content on social platforms, it must be high quality. Another takeaway: “ubiquity is the new exclusivity” – the more places content is available, the better. Finally, Huffington advised, “self expression is the new entertainment”; brands and companies must find an identity and share interesting insights to capture a following.
SnagFilms announced it commissioned Sundance Productions’ original web series Scammers, in which author Barry Marder, as his Letters from a Nut creation Ted L. Nancy, turns the tables on real-life online scam artists. Each episode will be four to six minutes; production begins in February for a Spring 2014 release.
Ahead of this year’s Puppy Bowl X, on Feb. 2, Animal Planet is asking fans to vote for the pooch most deserving of the title MVP (Most Valuable Puppy). Another addition: #PuppyBowl Instagrams from viewer’s accounts will air live on TV throughout the show’s six consecutive broadcasts. Viewers can download the free Animal Planet app for exclusive content and a second-screen experience, watch “gifs” on Tumblr, follow Twitter updates from @MeepTheBird and read adoption stories on the fan site.

AOL’s Adap.tv held its Worldwide Publisher Conference in New York City yesterday to discuss issues affecting the video advertising industry. On a panel with AOL CEO Bob Lord, The Weather Channel’s Global Revenue Officer Curt Hecht addressed the latest industry push for Smart TV integration, and the value in the market. “The notion of apps on different screens is no barrier for us,” said Hecht. “I think our content adds value to anything; we are [already] very distributed [across multiple screens], and where [The Weather Channel] app can go is unlimited.”

Super Bowl 2013 video ads were shared twice as many times as in the previous year, according to an Unruly report released yesterday. The top ten most-shared ads generated 10.2 million shares across Facebook, Twitter and blogs, an 89 percent (5.4 million) increase from 2012. Other stats include:
- The average share rate (the number of viewers who also shared the ads) doubled between 2013 and 2012. It took 57 views to generate one share in 2012 while in 2013 it took 31 views.
- Three of the top ten most shared Super Bowl ads of all time are movie trailers.
- 60 percent of most shared SB ads were launched before Super Bowl Sunday.
- The most shared ad of all time is the SB ad, VW’S 2011 The Force with 5.2 million shares. Budweiser’s 9/11 Tribute from 2002 came in second; the third is Brotherhood from the beer company’s SB 2013 ad.
