Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 26, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

The Care Bears are the latest kids property to head to Netflix with an original series. Netflix and AG Properties are teaming up for Care Bears and Cousins, slated to premiere in early 2016. The Bears had their own TV series from 1985-88, which originally aired on ABC and is currently available on Netflix. “There is a massive shift in the way kids consume content, and we have strategically positioned the Care Bears to be at the forefront of new media,” says Sean Gorman, AGP president.
Splash Entertainment’s VOD service Kabillion will now be offered to Cablevision’s Optimum TV subscribers, bringing its total reach to 50 million U.S. homes. Kabillion also recently signed content deals with FullBottle, VHX and Clokey Productions for the Gumby brand. The service, which owns The Kabillion YouTube channel, has amassed more than 65 million views in 2014.

King Rollo has adapted kids books including Spot, Maisy, and Poppy Cat to television.

Melissa McCarthy is working with director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) to develop a film in which she’ll play Tinker Bell, according to Deadline. Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors) is onboard to write the script based on a "fresh take" hatched up by McCarthy and Levy.

The network kicks off the merriment Friday, Dec. 5 at 10:30a with Wallykazam! “Wally Saves the Trollidays!” featuring Tony Bennett as the singing voice of Bobgoblin, an impulsive goblin with a knack for finding trouble.  “My granddaughters are very big fans of the show so they were excited to hear that I was going to do this,” the crooner told the New York Post. “I am not a fan of demographics so I started out with the premise of performing for the whole family and still feel that way, so it’s always a pleasure.” Kate Micucci (Garfunkel & Oates, The Big Bang Theory), also guests in the episode. Bubble Guppies special “A Very Guppy Christmas” premieres Friday, Dec. 12 at 9a. Beau Bridges (The Millers) guests as Mr. Claws, a jolly, white-bearded lobster who bears an uncanny resemblance to Santa.

MORE KIDS NEWS

NBCU
promised more synergy with its family of networks when it took full ownership of Sprout, and it’s delivering. Today is helping the kids net crown this year’s Chief Kindness Officer. Last week the morning show highlighted the five finalists, and now voting is open at Today.com/kindestkid. For each vote received, Sprout will donate $1 up to $25,000 to a national children’s charity. Additionally, Sprout will make a $5,000 donation to a national children’s charity in the winner’s name. Several Canadian broadcasters are now transmitting their broadcast feeds from Corus Entertainment’s media and broadcast facility, Corus Quay. The origination of DHX Media’s television services Disney XD and Disney Junior (English and French) went live this week from the facility, joining DHX’s Family Channel.

Dish and Turner announced Monday they have “mutually decided to restore service” of Cartoon Network, Boomerang and other Turner networks and extend the carriage of TBS and TNT. Still to be determined is whether Turner’s channels will join Disney and other content on Dish’s streaming video service, planned for launch next month.

Radio Disney is throwing a talent-packed family birthday party, and Disney Channel will share the festivities with viewers on Dec. 13. Disney Channel Celebrates Radio Disney’s Family Birthday will feature highlights from the Nov. 22 acoustic concert hosted by Alli Simpson, Olivia Holt and Zendaya, and featuring R5, The Vamps, Shawn Mendes, Christina Grimmie, Jacob Latimore and Leslie Grace. The concert was held at Club Nokia in LA, and aired as a live three-hour broadcast on Radio Disney.

Mattel has issued an official apology about the story line of a book in its “I Can Be” Barbie dolls and books designed to empower young girls. One of the books, Barbie: I Can Be A Computer Engineer, depicts Barbie struggling with computer problems that eventually have to be fixed by two male computer engineers. Although the book has been out since 2010, it only recently caught fire across social media. Mattel pulled the book from Amazon and issued the following statement: "The portrayal of Barbie in this specific story doesn’t reflect the Brand’s vision for what Barbie stands for."

DIGITAL UPDATE

Corus Entertainment partnered with SF-based mobile tech company Fingerprint to create a mobile entertainment platform to deliver content based on its Nelvana properties to kids aged 2-7. Set to launch globally in 2015, the platform will pack videos, games, music and ebooks featuring characters including Max & Ruby, Little Bear, Franklin and The Berenstain Bears. In 2012 and 2014 Corus invested in Fingerprint. “It’s been our dream to bring Corus’ family of great brands to life on mobile devices,” said Nancy MacIntyre, CEO of Fingerprint.

In other Nelvana news, the company hired Kin Community to manage its YouTube content. The agreement follows Nelvana parent Corus’ recent partnership with Kin Community that created Kin Canada, which combines Kin Community’s Canadian creators and audience with Corus’s portfolio of women’s TV properties.

American Greetings is releasing a downloadable, interactive Care Bears Advent Calendar loaded with daily treats and activities, including a full-length holiday video that can be unlocked on the last day for $2.99 per download.

In advance of the theatrical release of DreamWorks Animation’s latest film The Penguins of Madagascar, The Weather Channel teamed up with 20th Century Fox and DWA to use cross-platform branded backgrounds across multiple screens. Starting today, the animated penguins will be integrated in the full-screen native images displayed under translucent weather content, with the ability to purchase tickets from the ads. Additionally, images will change to mimic a user’s local weather conditions. Following the campaign, 20th Century Fox will run a similar spot on Nov. 26 to promote Exodus: Gods and Kings.

GAMES & APPS

There’s a new way to travel down Sesame Street. Sesame Workshop has redesigned its Sesame Street Go ad-free app (App Store and Google Play) and web service to provide the latest full-length Sesame TV eps plus games and music videos. Sesame Street Go also offers hundreds of “minisodes,” curated around characters, including Elmo’s World, Elmo the Musical, Super Grover 2.0, Bert and Ernie’s Great Adventures, Cookie’s Crumby Pictures, and Abby’s Flying Fairy School.

RESEARCH & TRENDS

Parents of kids and teens show a strong affinity for wearables and other next-gen tech compared to other adults with no young influencers at home. Parents with kids 17 also expressed significantly higher levels of likelihood to purchase, according to research from the Ipsos Media CT Kids & Family Center of Excellence. Findings include:
*  One in five parents of kids/teens indicated they were likely to purchase wearable technology in the next 12 months as compared to one-in-ten respondents without kids.
*  Twice as many parents of kids/teens reported being likely to purchase a 3D printer in the next year compared to non-parents.
*  Parents of kids/teens were significantly more likely than non-parents to be considering the purchase of wearable technology from brands such as Apple, Samsung, Google/Android, Sony and Nike.

Can chronically impatient Cookie Monster help preschoolers develop self-control? A new study conducted by the University of Iowa and commissioned by Sesame Workshop says, Yes. Researchers found kids who viewed a Sesame Street segment focused on demonstrating delayed gratification waited nearly four minutes longer for a snack than children who viewed other Sesame content. “Self-regulation is a skill that can be learned in the preschool years,” said Dr. Jennifer Kotler Clarke, VP, Research & Evaluation, at Sesame Workshop. The show’s 45th season contains segments such as “Cookie’s Crumby Pictures,” songs about persistence and patience and the “Word on the Street” that introduces new vocabulary to model strategies and build self-control and focused attention among other skills.

Productions, and commissioned by M6, PGS has secured 100 percent of the pay and free TV carriage available in continental Europe since it introduced the property to international broadcasters last year. Most recent deals include K2 (Italy), RTBF/OUFtivi (Belgium) and Sic (Portugal).
