Good morning. It’s Wednesday November 23, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBC Sports Group lined up an unprecedented 100 hours of coverage of test events for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, across NBC, NBCSN, Universal HD, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app from November through March 2017. Programming spans 12 sports  alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsled, cross country skiing, figure skating,  freestyle skiing, nordic combined, short track, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboarding, and speed skating  and is its most-ever for Olympic Winter Games test events. Coverage begins Saturday with live streaming at 11p of the big air event at the FIS Snowboard World Cup on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

ON THE AIR

The USGA’s partnership with FOX Sports brought to life the film 2016 U.S. Open: DJ’s Major Redemption, set to run on Thanksgiving Day. Narrated by Andre Braugher, the hour-long film debuts on FOX at 3p, before the channel’s Redskins/Cowboys matchup. The special chronicles Dustin Johnson’s journey in this year’s championship, going behind the scenes.

Journalist Rob Parker is heading to FS1 to serve as a contributor to Skip and Shannon: Undisputed. “Rob is a fearless and distinctive voice that is a seamless addition to the Undisputed team,” said Charlie Dixon, Executive Vice President of Content for FS1 and FS2. “We are thrilled to have him join the show and look forward to the thought-provoking analysis we know he will bring to the roundtable.”

Meanwhile, NBC Sports Group is offering eight hours of figure skating coverage this weekend, highlighted by performances from the men’s and ladies’ free skate competition at 2016 Grand Prix Japan on Sunday, at 4p on NBC. Play-by-play announcer Terry Gannon calls the action on NBC joined by 1998 Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski and three-time U.S. figure skating champion Johnny Weir.

ESPN lined up programming plans for its exclusive coverage of the NCAA Division I Football Championship, with playoffs beginning on Saturday with the first and second rounds on ESPN3. The other two quarterfinals will air on ESPN or ESPN2, the semifinals on ESPN2 and ESPNU and the championship on ESPN2.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Tough Mudder teamed up with USA Today Network’s weekly VR series VRtually There, offering viewers the first-ever Tough Mudder event showcased in a VR format. The segment runs today at noon and showcases 360 views from some of the brand’s most challenging obstacles of the five-mile desert terrain, steep hills, and mud pits including “The Cliff,” a 35 foot plunge off a man-made cliff and into the frigid waters of Lake Las Vegas, “Augustus Gloop,” where participants must enter into a chest-deep pit of water before ascending up a vertical tube while fighting through a cascade of water gushing down on them from above, and “Kong,” a 30-foot obstacle where participants swing like Tarzan, traversing from one floating ring to another with increasing distance between them.

ESPORTS

IEM Oakland wrapped up on a high for ESL, which reported that – with streams in 14 languages  the event reached a peak of 490,000 concurrent viewers across the globe. Online viewers of the broadcast consumed close to 6.4 million hours of content throughout the event, with 130,000 more unique viewers tuning into the tournament in VR. “We have put an amazing tournament in the Bay Area for a third year in a row and our continued success shows the tremendous potential of esports,” said Michal Blicharz, VP of Pro Gaming at ESL. “Holding marquee events like IEM brings true fans together, both in person and online, to join in the excitement at a global scale. We look forward to enhancing these premiere experiences in future events for both players and fans.”

Riot Games’ groundbreaking deal with MLBAM will reportedly be worth around $200 million for a two year span once parties sign on the dotted line, according to the LA Times. The League of Legends developer would give the company rights to stream matches through an app developed by MLBAM’s BAMTech.

Xbox reports that console players will now be able to stream Xbox One games through the Oculus Rift. Owners of the VR system will be able to stream their Xbox One library to Rift through the new Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app, including favorites like “Gears of War 4,” “Forza Horizon 3” and “Halo 5: Guardians.” The app will be available for free in the Oculus Store on Dec. 12.

Developer and publisher Ripstone Games announced its entry into esports, partnering with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and ESL with Pure Pool set to become the first title from the publisher to be featured as part of ESL’s new PS4 Events programming on PlayStation 4. The Pure Pool Contender Cup will begin in Europe on December 3 2016, with any and all Pure Pool owners on PlayStation 4 welcome to sign up and compete.
