VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
VR headsets are expensive, and the highest-end models require powerful computers or gaming consoles. It’s not too surprising, then, that such devices have sold at a slower rate than some analysts initially predicted. But big companies have been finding a way to make use of “location-based” VR. Disney, for instance, is rolling out Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, a new interactive VR experience that places users on a molten planet as they break into an enemy base. Developed by The Void and ILMxLAB, users will be able to try out the experience at several locations, including Walt Disney World (starting December 16) and Disneyland (starting January 5). Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuts in theaters December 16.
Web browser maker Mozilla has formed a new team dedicated to develop “social mixed reality” technologies for the web. The non-profit made the announcement Monday, highlighting mixed reality’s capacity to facilitate online social interactions. The new group will focus on areas such as search, developing avatars and virtual identities, and facilitating virtual communications using text and voice-based tools. The team will also work on making sure that social mixed reality technology can run across other devices, including VR headsets.
ESPORTS
Riot Games made a big new announcement, unveiling the ten teams that have been selected for permanent membership in the ‘League of Legends’ North American League Championship series. Riot Game first launched the league in 2013. The ten teams have each paid Riot $10 million as a franchise fee. And the four teams that are completely new to the NA LCS will fork over an additional $3 million each. You can find a full list of the teams here.
RESEARCH
Advertisers would be wise to take note of a fascinating new study from Columbia Business School professor Sandra Matz. According to the new research, even a single “like” makes it far easier for advertisers to tailor ads to a user’s psychological profile. Simply relying on demographic traits like age or gender is significantly less effective. The study found that targeting ads with the help of just one “like” resulted in a 40% boost in clicks and a 50% boost in purchases. Matz also points out that the study suggests some potentially troubling possibilities. “If you use it in a context where you’re trying to manipulate people, you can try and get them to do something that goes against their best interest, like not going out on Election Day to vote,” she told Business Insider. “That’s certainly a context where you don’t want to see it happen.” For the study, Matz and her team ran Facebook ad campaigns among 3.5 million users.
MEASURING UP
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Rob Norman, the Global Chief Digital Officer for WPP’s GroupM, is stepping down from his position. He officially vacates the role on January 1. He’ll still stay on as an advisor to GroupM and its roster of clients. It’s the end of an era for Norman, who served WPP in various roles for 31 years. He had worked as GroupM’s Global Chief Digital Officer since 2012.
