Maybe Facebook Live isn’t just for exploding watermelons. Back in May, Fox used Facebook’s live-streaming platform to debut Outcast, the network’s Robert Kirkman-created horror series, ahead of the show’s linear premiere. And according to a new report from Mobile Marketer, that approach yielded dividends. The report finds that Fox enjoyed a 250 percent increase in interactions between users and Fox’s Facebook pages after the broadcast. And the network’s UK Facebook page saw a 320 percent increase in positive sentiment and brand awareness. Perhaps most importantly, Fox managed to collect a trove of data about Outcast’s viewers, including what they were interested in, where they came from, and details about their watching behavior. As Mobile Marketer points out, such information can be used for future marketing and programming decisions. It’s enough to make one strongly suspect that Fox may try similar experiments with future shows.

There’s an enlightening new article out of Digiday. The gist: As Snapchat continues to command an increasing amount of interest from marketers looking to reach younger consumers, many advertisers remain wary about Snapchat’s measurement offerings. While Facebook and Google offer comprehensive data platforms, Snapchat doesn’t offer easily-accessible metrics – such as clicks or first-party data that would enable brands to track users – that would show whether an ad is successful. Snapchat is quick to point out that it offers measurement capabilities through 11 partners, including Nielsen and Innovid. But many execs find Snapchat’s offerings unsatisfactory on the whole. VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

’s The Martian VR Experience, an interactive virtual reality experience based on the 2015 sci-fi film The Martian, initially debuted at January’s Consumer Electronics Show. But Fox decided to hold off on a wide release until high-end VR headsets became widely available. Now that a number of such headsets have debuted, Fox is letting users brave the red planet – for a price of $19.99. The experience is available for the HTC Vive and Playstation VR headsets. The Martian VR Experience was produced by the Fox Innovation Lab. For a 360-degree preview narrated by co-executive producer Ridley Scott, hop on down to the Digital Spotlight section.
 
Sony Pictures and Nokia announced that they have teamed up on a new VR initiative. Under the new partnership, Sony will use Nokia’s Ozo VR camera to produce 360-degree videos. And Sony will also add Nokia’s SDK (software development kit) to its Privilege Plus entertainment app. (Note that the Privilege Plus app is only available for Sony-made mobile phones.) Nokia first unveiled its Ozo camera last year. And the camera doesn’t come cheap: Nokia charges about $60,000 for it.

Four of Comcast’s regional sports networks are set to start offering live-streamed NHL games. NBCU-owned sports networks in Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and California’s Bay Area will be able to live-stream Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, and Washington Capitals games to Comcast subscribers. Users will need to authenticate their Comcast credentials to access the live-streams.

Google Music is relaunching this week, and it’s got some eerily impressive personalization features. The overhauled service, which works for Android, iOS and the web, will now feature streaming mixes based on users’ activity and location. For instance, if you’re at the gym, the app might automatically pull up your favorite workout music. The app also uses its machine learning algorithms to make recommendations based on weather; you might get different music in a rainstorm than you would under clear skies. Some users, of course, might find the service invasive. That’s why its location-based features are entirely opt-in.

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
