11/06/17: CNBC: Sprint and T-Mobile end merger talks

CynopsisDigital
Good morning. It’s Monday November 6, 2017 and this is your your first early morning Digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Convolutional Network: In machine learning, a convolutional network is a type of neural network that analyzes visual imagery. Convolutional networks are used for image recognition features such as Snapchat’s face swapping and Facebook’s facial recognition.

JUST IN…

After weeks of discussions, merger talks between Sprint and T-Mobile ended without success on Saturday. Said Sprint president and CEO Marcelo Claure, “While we couldn’t reach an agreement to combine our companies, we certainly recognize the benefits of scale through a potential combination. However, we have agreed that it is best to move forward on our own.” Had a deal between the third- and fourth-largest gone through, it would have created a mobile company with over 100 million subscribers.

OTT + SVOD

AT&T says it’s planning to launch a major upgrade of DirecTV Now, its OTT-based TV service, in Q1 of next year. Updates will likely include support for pay-per-view programming, cloud DVR service, the ability to receive multiple video streams at once, and an improved user interface. AT&T CFO John Stephens said that the updates would turn DirecTV Now into a more lucrative property.  “With all those opportunities go additional opportunities to raise revenues, and revenues that customers would be willing to pay for and improve the quality of the service,” he said.

Shudder, the AMC Networks-owned SVOD channel for horror, suspense and thriller content, is now available in Germany and Austria. The service was already available to U.S., U.K, Irish, and Canadian audiences. German and Austrian audiences can stream Shudder through both Android and iOS devices.

If you happen to be a fan of the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, you’re in luck. NBC Sports Regional Networks is now offering NBC Sports Gold’s “Blazers Pass,” a new service featuring 15 Blazers games. The service is only available to subscribers living in Oregon and Washington State. It’s the first direct-to-consumer streaming product from NBC Sports Regional Networks.

PUBLISHERS

The local news sites DNAinfo and Gothamist have been shuttered. Gothamist, which focused on the New York City area, and DNAinfo, which focused on both New York and Chicago, had 115 employees between them. Both were owned by businessman Joe Ricketts. His decision to shut down Gothamist and DNAinfo came only one week after the sites’ employees voted to join the Writers Guild East of America. In the past, Ricketts has been vocal in his opposition to modern-day unions, arguing that they’re detrimental to free enterprise.

APPS + PLATFORM

Amazon’s Twitch has begun rolling out Raids, a new feature that makes it easier for users to send their viewers to another streamer’s broadcast. Broadcasters simply have to type “/raid” into a chat, followed by the name of a broadcaster; a countdown timer will then appear, and anyone who clicked on the link will automatically be sent to the new channel. Twitch first announced the new feature last month, at its annual TwitchCon event. It will be available to all users within two weeks.

President Donald Trump’s Twitter account temporarily vanished last week. While some initially assumed the outage was the result of a technical glitch, Twitter later revealed the true cause: A customer support employee on their last day at the company deactivated the account intentionally. All told, the president’s Twitter account was offline for 11 minutes.

AUDIO + MUSIC STREAMING

Music-streamer Pandora may have under-performed on revenue in Q3, but new CEO Roger Lynch has some ideas for how to change things going forward. For one, the company intends to boost advertising revenue by improving its ad tech, Lynch told investors during the company’s earnings call. He also said that the company intends to secure more listeners by launching additional non-music content. (The company already has a partnership in place that lets it stream Serial and This American Life.) “New forms of content – like podcasts, spoken word and traditional radio – will expand engagement with our existing audience and attract new and lapsed listeners,” said Lynch. Lynch joined Pandora in August; he’d previously served as CEO of the Dish Network-owned virtual MVPD service Sling TV.

LET’S MAKE A DEAL

Snapchat parent Snap Inc. is moving to improve its ad tech. As first reported by TechCrunch, the company has acquired Metamarkets, a startup that provides programmatic ad data-related services to marketers. Those services include a data dashboard to help marketers measure how their campaigns are performing; inventory discovery and bid monitoring for ad exchanges; and an API that lets marketers import programmatic data into other apps. The companies haven’t commented on the deal. According to TechCrunch, Snap paid less than $100 million. As with Facebook and Twitter, ad dollars account for the vast majority of Snap’s revenue.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Brat, a teen-oriented digital production startup launched by entrepreneur Rob Fishman earlier in the year, has added a new exec. As first reported by Recode, Darren Lachtman has been named as co-founder of the company alongside Fishman. It’s not the first time the two have worked together; Fishman and Lachtman co-founded Niche, the influencer marketing company that Twitter acquired in 2015. Brat has also secured some new funding, raising $10 million in a new round led by A. Capital. Existing investors Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Advancit Capital, and Box Group also contributed.
