Discovery CEO David Zaslav pointed a stern finger at sports programmers during the company’s Q3 earnings call yesterday. “One of the things that has stopped the growth of cable is the price of all that sports,” he said during the call, in which he said Discovery lost about 2 percent of its subscribers in the third quarter, a trend he expects will continue. “The biggest impediment now is the price of cable in the US,” he said, which has been rising “mostly due to high sports fees.” Zaslav also noted AT&T’s new DirecTV Now service will carry a majority of Discovery programs and services, which account for “about 85 percent” of Discovery’s domestic revenues.
NBC is doing some midseason rejiggering of its Monday schedule. The network is extending drama Timeless by three eps, bringing the full-season order to 16, and will premiere new action series Taken on Monday, February 27 at 10p. The series, starring Clive Standen, immediately follows the debut of the spring cycle of The Voice. “Monday nights are critical to our success,” said NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt. NBC’s other two new fall series, This Is Us and The Good Place, have been ordered for 18 and 13 episodes this season, respectively.
It’s official. Hulu part-owners Disney and 21st Century Fox signed agreements to make some of their programming available on the live streaming video service Hulu is gearing up to launch in 2017. The deals hand Hulu an additional 35-plus networks, including Disney’s ABC, ESPN, Disney Channel and Freeform; and Fox’s Fox, Fox Sports 1, Fox News, Fox Business, FX and National Geographic.
A&E Network and Entertainment Weekly, in conjunction with the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. and the Broadcast Television Journalists Assn., formed a multi-platform content and promotional partnership for the Critics’ Choice Awards. Exclusive announcement of the noms for the 22nd annual Critics’ Choice Awards television categories will go live on EW.com and the People/Entertainment Weekly Network (People.com/PEN) on November 14, and the movie categories on December 1. Comedian/actor T.J. Miller will return as host of this year’s awards, broadcast live on A&E on Sunday, December 11 at 8p.

The Mindy Project’s creator, exec producer and star Mindy Kaling and co-star Ed Weeks are partnering on a comedy project about liberal lesbian couple Laurel and Marisa, who move with their teenage son to Laurel’s conservative home town in Kansas. Co-written by Weeks and Hannah Mackay (Peep Show), the untitled project has a script commitment plus penalty from ABC.
FX comedy Baskets, starring Zach Galifianakis, will return for its second season on Thursday, January 19 at 10p. In season 2, the Baskets family is at its most fragile. After losing his wife and his rodeo job, Chip (Galifianakis) jumps on a train to get out of Bakersfield, but a gang of gutter punks, the police, and a sudden death drag him right back into the drama he tried to escape.
HBO will premiere limited drama series The Young Pope on Sunday, January 15 at 9p. Starring Jude Law as Lenny Belardo, aka Pope Pius XIII, and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, the first part of the 10-ep series will debut on Jan. 15, while the second part will follow the next night at the same time. The remaining episodes will air subsequent Sundays and Mondays at 9p.
New ups and downs await in a new season of Sister Wives, debuting Sunday, November 27 on TLC. Sister rivalry, mother/daughter disputes, new relationships and marriage challenges are all in the mix for the Browns this season.
Lock your doors. My Haunted House, which recounts the terrifying experiences of people whose homes have been invaded by spirits, heads to Destination America on Sunday, November 27 at 8p.
Season 14 of Bravo’s Top Chef heads to the culinary hotspot of Charleston, SC, when it premieres on Thursday, December 1 at 10p. In a new twist, eight acclaimed chefs from across the country will unpack their knives alongside eight chefs from seasons past, who have never won the prestigious title and are back for redemption.
The glittering ladies of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills are back for season 7 on Tuesday, December 6 at 9p. Fans can expect extravagant trips and unimaginable indiscretions as Erika Girardi, Lisa Vanderpump, Kyle Richards, Lisa Rinna, and Eileen Davidson are joined by new housewife Dorit Kemsley and friend Eden Sassoon.
Travel Channel’s Jack Maxwell continues his search for the world’s most interesting beverages and the people who drink them in the third season of Booze Traveler, premiering on Monday, December 12 at 10p. Maxwell will sail Hobart Harbor in Australia for a taste of the world’s best single malt whiskey, catch spiders in Cambodia to make tarantula wine and drink apple pie moonshine at the Mamou Mardi Gras in Louisiana, among other quests this season.
Ever-hopeful romantic Nick Viall, who’s been passed over by a few bachelorettes, both in and out of paradise, will be the center of attention when he takes on the role of leading man for the 21st season of ABC’s The Bachelor. Season premieres on Monday, January 2 at 8p.
Nickelodeon will premiere season 2 of competition series Paradise Run on Monday, January 2 at 7p. Airing daily, the series is hosted by Daniella Monet (Victorious) and features three teams of kids racing across a luxurious resort competing in a series of funny and adrenaline-pumping challenges in Hawaii.
The 2016 iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina will be televised for the second year in a row exclusively on Telemundo, this Sunday, November 6 at 6p. The two-hour show will include performances by Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Juanes, Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam and others.
The magic begins on Thursday, November 24 from 9a-noon when the 90th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade marches down the streets of New York. Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker of Today will host the broadcast on NBC; in addition, Telemundo will simulcast the parade in Spanish with the event hosted by Jessica Carrillo and Carlos Ponce.
Ovation TV will air the US premieres of two one-hour documentaries focusing on renowned artist Pablo Picasso. Picasso: A Museum Reborn will debut on Thursday, December 1 at 7p and Picasso, The Legacy will premiere on Thursday, December 8 at 7p. Both documentaries were co-produced by Gedeon Programmes, ARTE and Olivier Widmaier Picasso’s production company, Welcome.
Multi-Grammy Award winners Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and The Weeknd will perform at The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which will film in Paris for the first time for broadcast Monday, December 5 at 10p on CBS. The lingerie runway show, which merges fashion and entertainment, will be seen in more than 190 countries.
Bounce TV is heralding the holiday season with themed episodes of Family Time, which airs Tuesdays at 9p. The November 22 ep “Thanks for Giving” combines comedy and kind-heartedness; the December 20 ep, “Merry Kwanzaa,” includes chaos, cheer and caroling.
Antenna TV will air holiday episodes and themed marathons throughout the season, including the “Stuff It!” Thanksgiving-themed marathon on Thursday, November 24 comprising of an 18-hour/36-ep marathon of All in the Family, beginning at 5a. Then, on December 24-25, Antenna will air classic TV show episodes celebrating the holiday season, beginning at 1p Christmas Eve.
Molly Price (The Knick) scored a lead role in Ryan Murphy’s new anthology series for FX. The eight-episode first installment of Feud documents the legendary rivalry between movie stars Joan Crawford, played by Jessica Lange, and Bette Davis, played by Susan Sarandon, and how they came together in 1962 to collaborate on a picture each hoped would revive their careers.
Epix added to the cast for its new original series Get Shorty. Sean Bridgers (Rectify, Room), Lidia Porto (Horrible Bosses 2), Megan Stevenson (Review) Goya Robles (11:55), Lucy Walters (Power) and Carolyn Dodd (The Adventures of Catty Wompus) will join series stars Chris O’Dowd and Ray Romano.
Andrew Caldwell (Transformers) landed a recurring role on the upcoming third season of the iZombie, Rob Thomas’ zombie drama on The CW. Caldwell will play good ole boy Harley Jones, an anti-government extremist who makes no secret of his hatred of zombies.
Eric Bogosian (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The Get Down) has been cast in a recurring role on the upcoming second season of Showtime’s Billions. He’ll play Lawrence Boyd, who runs the investment bank Spartan-Ives and is one of the most highly respected figures in the world of finance.

After a successful three-week preview last summer, Page Six TV will return for a national debut on Fox Television stations in 17 markets, including NY and LA. Twentieth Television, the syndication arm of 20th Century Fox Television, will handle national distribution and barter sales for the daily TV show from the New York Post and Endemol Shine North America.
To celebrate the return of TBS late-nighter Conan to NY, Team Coco launched a mobile game to bring fans unprecedented access to Conan O’Brien in the Big Apple. Created with AT&T, the Catch Coco leverages adventure gaming and augmented reality with quintessential NY themes. Taped at the Apollo Theater, O’Brien’s week of NY shows airs this week at 11p. Noticias Telemundo anchors Jose Diaz-Balart and Maria Celeste Arraras will lead the network’s unprecedented coverage effort.
Nelvana expanded its broadcast partnership with SUPER RTL, Germany’s leading children’s broadcaster, to bring a trio of live-action and animated kids’ series Hotel Transylvania: The Series, Ranger Rob and Stanley Dynamic to viewers across Germany.
November on Canada’s Family Channel is packed with drama and excitement as two new series join the after-school lineup this month. Animated Kuu Kuu Harajuku rocks its way onto the network at 3:30p, followed by superhero adventure series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir at 4p.
Disney Channel ordered a third season of K.C. Undercover, the network’s spy comedy-action series starring Zendaya. The actress and recording artist will resume production on the TV series in early 2017 after wrapping production on two feature films, The Greatest Showman and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
9 Story Media Group reached an agreement with Little Critter LLC to produce a new animated series based on Mercer Mayer’s beloved Little Critter children’s book characters. 9 Story will also control worldwide distribution and merchandising rights for the series, with the exception of publishing and digital media content, which remain with Little Critter LLC. to help build Little Critter into a global brand.
Cartoon Network in November is delivering a month of new episodes of Clarence that began yesterday at 5:30p, then continuing with new eps of Mighty Magiswords on Thursday, November 3 at 6:30p. On November 17 at 7:30p the network will air a special new episode of Steven Universe, followed by back-to-back episodes of Adventure Time on November 19 at 8:30p.

For the first time in its history, FOX Business Network topped CNBC in business day viewers for an entire month. According to Nielsen Media Research, October marked FBN’s highest-rated month ever in business day with 170,000 total viewers. Compared to the same month last year, FBN was up double and triple digits across all dayparts.
CNN topped all of cable news in the genre’s key demographic group of A25-54 for the first time in 15 years. CNN bested Fox News Channel for the month in the demo, in both Total Day and Prime Time. Fox News Channel, meanwhile, set a new record as the No. 1 basic cable network in Total viewers for a fifth month this year, both in Primetime and Total Day.
Telemundo ranked as the No. 1 Spanish-language network during Monday-Friday primetime among A18-49 and A18-34 during the month of October, extending its winning streak in Spanish-language television for three consecutive months, according to Nielsen.
For the week of October 17, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with Chris Harrison, the series’ Celebrity Week featuring Las Vegas stars playing for charity, built week to week in Households (7 percent) and Total Viewers (2 percent), according to Nielsen national Live + Same Day ratings.
Hallmark Channel hit a record with the start to its “Countdown to Christmas” holiday event franchise as the original movie premiere of A Wish for Christmas (Saturday, October 29) became the highest-rated and most-watched “Countdown to Christmas” debut since the holiday franchise launched in 2009, among Households, Total Viewers, and A25-54.
FYI experienced its strongest October to date among all key demos. The network delivered double-digit increases with Total Viewers (34 percent), A25-54 (26 percent) and A18-49 (14 percent). Season 4 of Married at First Sight was a top driver for FYI in October, with the series growing in key demos (70 percent with Total Viewers, 25 percent with A18-49 and 15 percent with A25-54) from premiere to the finale.
On the syndication front, most shows were in a holding pattern in the session ending October 23, the last full week before the key November sweep. Dr. Phil (3.3 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, steady with the week before) crushed the talk shows for the seventh week in a row and jumped 14 percent from last year – the largest increase in the category. Dr. Phil also handily topped the field among W25-54 with a 1.6 in the key demo.
