IN THE NEWS
Bob Iger is wasting no time making changes to Disney. Within a day of replacing his successor, Bob Chapek, as CEO, Iger sent a memo to employees of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution informing them that the head of the division, Kareem Daniel, is out. And that’s just the beginning. “Over the coming weeks, we will begin implementing organizational and operating changes within the company,” Iger wrote. “It is my intention to restructure things in a way that honors and respects creativity as the heart and soul of who we are.” Iger said he has asked Dana Walden, Alan Bergman, Jimmy Pitaro, and Christine McCarthy to “work together on the design of a new structure that puts more decision-making back in the hands of our creative teams and rationalizes costs.”
Iger’s salary as CEO of Walt Disney Co. will be $1 million with an annual bonus of up to another million, according to a filing with the SEC. Even with possible stock and options with a target value of $25 million, it appears Iger is taking a pay cut – in 2019, his last full year as CEO of Disney, Iger took home total compensation of $47.5 million.
Three- to 10-second ads is the ideal time-in-view range for driving incremental sales, according to a case study from Integral Ad Science conducted in partnership with Catalina. The study focused on how media quality influences return on ad and sales lift in correlation to in-view advertisements and time-in-view. Other key takeaways include a 180% lift in incremental ROAS for the in-view group versus not-in-view; 74% of incremental sales from the test campaign were driven by the in-view audience. Incremental sales from the in-view ads drove higher sales lift and incremental sales compared to ads that are not in view.
Comcast has kicked off another Free TV week, running now through November 28. Xfinity customers on X1, Flex and Stream can access thousands of shows and movies from over a dozen premium networks and streaming services, including HBO Max, Prime Video, STARZ, EPIX, SHOWTIME, AMC+ and more.
The Television Critics Tour will return to in-person panels in January, after two years of virtual events due to the pandemic. CBS, Fox and The CW are among those skipping the event, due to lighter midseason schedules and “organizational transitions,” according to the TCA.
Miami’s Fontainebleau Resort filed papers with bankruptcy court claiming the National Association of Television Programming Executives, which filed for bankruptcy protection in October after pandemic losses, owes it $3.4 million. The Fontainebleau is opposing NATPE’s plan to auction off its assets. “Disclosures about the sale process and the Debtor’s operations are inadequate, and this Court should require the Debtor to slow down and run a transparent sale process designed to maximize the return to general unsecured creditors,” said the hotel, traditionally the site of NATPE’s January conference.
A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of YouTube subscribers, accusing Disney of using its control of Hulu+Live TV and ESPN to dictate pricing in the virtual TV market, noting the price for YouTube TV has risen from $35 to $65/month since Disney acquired Fox assets in 2019.

RATINGS
The November 19 premiere of Hallmark Channel holiday film “Three Wise Men and a Baby” became the most-watched movie of the year across ad-supported cable in demos including HHs (2.9 million), Total Viewers (3.6 million), and W25-54 (411,000). With its “Countdown to Christmas” in week six, Hallmark Channel ranks as the most-watched cable entertainment network.
Season three of “Dead to Me” rang up 30.3 million hours viewed in its first four days, placing at #4 on Netflix’s top 10 English-language series for the week. “The Crown” was number one, with 84.3 million hours viewed its second week on the streamer.
In syndication, preemptions for President Biden’s November 9 press conference on the midterm elections and enormous increases in news channel viewing of the voting depressed daytime shows’ ratings throughout the week in the session ending November 13. One of the bright spots was “Karamo” (new season high 0.4, up 33%), which was the only rookie talker recording rising ratings. The newcomer had its most-watched week yet, delivering an average 554,000 viewers each day, up 50,000 from the prior week.
HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU” returned on Monday, November 14 to deliver a .62 Live+3 rating among P25-54 and a .82 among W25-54. With ratings increases of 38 percent among P25-54 and 52 percent for W25-54 over year-ago levels, the premiere episode attracted more than 3.2 million total viewers.
