11/21/19: LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan will continue his run atop the tour

Mike Whan inked a long-term contract to remain atop the LPGA as he wraps up his tenth year as s LPGA Commissioner where the organization had only 23 events on the 2011 schedule in Whan’s first year and is now wrpapping up a season with 32 official events and $70.2 million in prize money.
“Ten years ago, I’m not sure many of us would have been bold enough to predict where we are our today,” he wrote in an update to members. “Events like the KPMG Women’s PGA, Race to the CME Globe, UL International Crown and Founders Cup weren’t even an idea back then. In fact, 19 of the 33 official events on the 2020 LPGA Tour Schedule weren’t on the LPGA Tour just 10 years ago! Now we have an official team event, five strong majors, multiple events played with men, exciting season-long competitions, events staged in 12 different regions of the world and TV coverage in over 160 countries. We have built incredible alliances with many industry stakeholders, who have also helped us to create a stronger LPGA and fuel the growth of young women in the game. Our Tour Professionals come from more than 50 countries and regions, and each year, it seems we welcome another member who is the first from her country.”


The 2020 MLS All-Star Game presenter by Target is heading to LA where, for the first time, the MLS All-Stars will face the Liga MX All-Stars on July 29 at Banc of California Stadium. The match will be broadcast on ESPN and Univision networks in the US, TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, as well as on ESPN throughout Mexico and Latin America. “We are so pleased to bring the 2020 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target to Los Angeles, one of the great soccer markets in North America,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber in a statement.  “As we celebrate our 25th season, we wanted to deliver an unique and unprecedented format for our annual All-Star Game.  Our first ever game between the best of MLS and Liga MX’s top players is the perfect way to build on the growing relationship between the two top soccer leagues in the region.”
The College Football Playoff announced a lineup of multi-platinum national recording artists who will perform at AT&T Playoff Playlist Live! on January 11-12 as well as at the Capital One Stage at Allstate Championship Tailgate Plaza on Jan. 13. The free concerts will take place in New Orleans’ Woldenberg Park. Jan. 11 sees performances be H.E.R., Nas and MAX. Jan 12 features Meghan Trainor, Bastille and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. Jan. 13 then offers Tim McGraw and Judah & the Lion while Lauren Daigle performs the “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the game.
Sunday sees NBC Sports Group kick off its slate of Presidents Cup-themed programming with the first installment of the three-part Road to the Presidents Cup series leading up to the biennial competition, being held Dec. 11-14 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia. All three parts of Road to the Presidents Cup will air on NBC (Part I –Nov. 24 at Noon ET; Part II –Dec. 1 at 5p; Part III –Dec. 8 at 3p). Hosted by GOLF Channel’s Rich Lerner, the series will preview the 13th edition of the international biennial competition “through detailed insight on those who will play the most prominent roles in the event, including International team captain Ernie Els, and United States captain Tiger Woods.”

NBC Sports Philadelphia’s alternative sports betting-focused 76ers broadcast is making a return with a 10-game slate during the 2019-20 season. Host Marc Farzetta returns alongside sports betting expert Brad Feinberg and Anthony Gargano to focus on the betting odds, and how the flow of the game impacts those lines. New, enhanced on-screen graphics focused on real time sports betting data will be integrated in the program, complementing the hosts’ commentary and analysis.
SiriusXM’s Dave LaGreca signed a new multi-year contract to continue as the lead host on SiriusXM’s pro wrestling show, Busted Open. LaGreca hosts the show every weekday (9a-noon alongside wrestling legends Bully Ray, Mark Henry and Tommy Dreamer on the SiriusXM Fight Nation channel.

NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson announced his retirement with the upcoming 2020 season, drawing to a close a racing career for the seven-time champion and future Hall of Famer. As reactions spread throughout the industry, the primary sponsor of Johnson’s car, Ally, stated that “Jimmie Johnson is a legend in racing, the epitome of class and the ultimate representative of our brand,” said Andrea Brimmer, chief marketing officer at Ally. “We are proud that Jimmie will finish his remarkable NASCAR driving career with Ally as his primary sponsor.”
Belk informed the Charlotte Sports Foundation that the company will not renew its deal as title sponsor of the city’s college football postseason bowl game and kickoff game, according to multiple reports. The deal is set to expire after next month’s Belk Bowl.
Stephens, an independent financial services firm, locked in multi-year sponsorship of LPGA Tour member Maria Fassi. Miami Super Bowl Host Committee and Sport Management Research Institute entered into an exclusive agreement for SMRI to produce an economic impact study of Super Bowl LIV and its various ancillary events. SMRI will conduct on-site surveys of Super Bowl visitors at all major events associated with the game, including Super Bowl Live at Bayfront Park, Super Bowl Experience at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Taste of the NFL and a number of others, as well as the game itself. Researchers will document a number of key statistics that measure spending associated with Super Bowl LIV. The company’s economic impact report for Super Bowl LIV will measure the spending of South Florida visitors, media, contractors, small businesses and more to determine the overall contribution to the local economy.
