Fox is reviving “Joe Millionaire,” a dating reality show that was a hit its first season in 2003, but got canceled after season two. While the original had women competing for a man they thought was wealthy but was in fact not, “Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer” will have two single man, one of whom is actually a millionaire. “This revival of ‘Joe Millionaire’ represents a potent combination: one of the most innovative and popular dating shows of all time with SallyAnn Salsano, who ranks among the most fearless producers in the business,” said Rob Wade, Head of Alternative Programming at Fox Entertainment. “I’ve long admired ‘Joe Millionaire’ for its daring premise, and since the moment I joined Fox, I’ve wanted to bring it back in the spotlight in a whole new way for both new viewers and fans of the original.” The series debuts in January.

Newsmax White House correspondent Emerald Robinson has been taken off the air after tweeting a vaccine conspiracy theory. “Dear Christians: the vaccines contain a bioluminescent marker called LUCIFERASE so that you can be tracked. Read the last book of the New Testament to see how this ends,” Robinson wrote in a post that was removed by Twitter as a violation of safety rules. “Newsmax is currently reviewing the posts and during that period Ms. Robinson will not be on air but continue with duties for the network,” said Newsmax.

Fox ordered a second season “Fantasy Island,” a reboot of the 1977-84 series. The drama ranked as the #1 new scripted program among A18-49 last summer, and will return in the form of a special two-hour holiday episode, “Welcome to the Snow Globe” on Tuesday, December 21 at 8p.

ViacomCBS reported 3Q21 results and announced a distribution agreement with T-Mobile to provide its customers with Paramount+ Essential. Total revenue grew 13% year-over-year to $6.6 billion, reflecting growth across all revenue streams. The company added 4.3 million global streaming subscribers in the quarter, bringing its total global streaming subscribers to nearly 47 million

Univision Communications’ 3Q21 financial results included a hefty increase in revenue – up 20.3% from the prior year’s quarter, to $754.7 million. Advertising revenue increased 32.5% to $442.7 million, and increased 15.6% over third quarter 2019 advertising revenue. Core advertising revenue increased 37.4%. from the prior year’s quarter led by double-digit growth from national advertising.

At Tegna, total revenue for the quarter was $756 million, up 2% year-over-year. Subscription revenue was $369 million, up 16%, while advertising and marketing services revenue hit a 3Q record of $364 million, up 22%. As for a possible sale, Dave Lougee, President/CEO, told analysts during an earnings call, “As we stated in our press release on Sept. 21, we have received — and the board has been actively considering — acquisition proposals. We are carefully evaluating these proposals against our standalone prospects.”

Gray Television posted third quarter revenue of $601 million, dipping 0.5% from $604 million. Combined local and national broadcast advertising revenue accounted for $292 million, while retransmission consent revenue hit $266 million, both of which significantly exceeded expectations. Combined local and national broadcast revenue, excluding political advertising revenue (total core revenue), was $292 million, increasing by $55 million, or 23% compared to the third quarter of 2020. Gray’s total core revenue in 3Q 2021 increased by $18 million, or 7% over 3Q 2019, the most recent non-political and pre-pandemic year.

Global streaming subscribers rose 40% year-over-year in 3Q21, to 18 million, reported Lionsgate, with Starzplay International subs accounting for 7.5 million. Television Production revenue of $336 million was up 70% compared to the prior year quarter and segment profit jumped by 188% to $28.5 million, reflecting the deliveries of new series.

Netflix gave a straight-to-series order for an adaptation of 1998 Tom Wolfe novel A Man in Full, from Regina King and David E. Kelley. Kelley is showrunner, writer and exec producer, with King directing and executive producing as part of her Royal Ties production company’s first-look deal with Netflix.

Wonwoo Park, creator of “The Masked Singer,” has inked a first look development deal with Fox Alternative Entertainment. The first project out of the gate is a US version of Korean singing competition “Lotto Singer.” “Wonwoo’s ability to identify and develop concepts that are unique in premise and universal in appeal makes him one of the most innovative producers in the business,” said EVP, Head of Fox Alternative Entertainment Allison Wallach.

“Candygram” is in development at ABC. The spy drama from Katie Stone and David Daitch (“Shooter”), Derek Kolstad (“John Wick”), Rebelle Media and 20th Television focuses on a street smart Las Vegas local who works with the CIA.

Brian Graden Media has teamed with Tik Tok stars the “Old Gays” (3.2 million social media followers and counting) to develop and produce a new comedic docu-series following their “golden years” in Cathedral City, CA as they navigate their newfound social fame.

HTM partners Jed Mercurio (“Bodyguard”) and Jimmy Mulville (“Episodes”) signed a first look deal with 20th Television. “These guys are artists at the top of their games and their projects are always as successful artistically as they are commercially,” said 20th TV President Karey Burke. “We’re thrilled to have them at 20th.”

Playground Entertainment (“Wolf Hall”) is adapting South Korean graphic novel Moms as a series. The show centers on three lonely middle-aged Korean women who take back their lives.

Nicely Entertainment and Pandora Persephone Films have formed a co-production alliance for the new holiday movie, “Christmas Spirit,” starring James Robinson (“Outlander”) and Ashley Newbrough (“Privileged”). Principal photography in Scotland’s Highlands begins November 8.

Disney Branded Television has ordered “Primos, an original animated comedy series created and executive produced by Natasha Kline (director of “Big City Greens,” “South Park”). The story is based on Kline’s childhood experiences with her extended multicultural Mexican American family.

Apple TV+ landed a docu-series about NBA superstar Magic Johnson, from XTR and A New Slate Ventures. The four-parter will features never-before-seen footage and interviews with Johnson.

Casting notes: Timothy Olyphant (“Justified”) has joined the cast of Amazon’s “Daisy Jones & the Six” in a recurring role…Seven actors have joined the season two cast of HBO’s “Perry Mason.” Katherine Waterston landed a series regular role, while Hope Davis, Jon Chaffin, Fabrizio Guido, Peter Mendoza, Onohoua Rodgriguez and Jee Young Han will recur.

SeriesFest, in partnership with Propagate, announced the winner of SeriesFest’s 7th annual ‘Storytellers Initiative. Corey Dashuan took home the prize for his script, “F*ck Summer’s Over,” which has been optioned by Propagate.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Hulu is developing a taste for food series. “Candified: Home for the Holidays,” following candy artists who build a house made of sweets, premieres Wednesday, December 1.

Contractor Mike Holmes will “make it right” for homeowners who have fallen victim to careless or dishonest contractors in the new HGTV series “Holmes Family Rescue,” premiering Saturday, December 4 at 8p. Holmes teams up with his son and daughter to rescue clients who are struggling with botched construction jobs.

All-lesbian reality series “Tampa Baes – described as “’The L Word’ meets ‘Real Housewives’ and ‘Jersey Shore’” – premieres today on Amazon Prime Video.

Competition series “Charli vs. Dixie” makes its debut Saturday, November 13, with social media stars the D’Amelios going head to head in challenges in front of their famous friends. The Snap show will air every other day through December 1.

Vampire drama “Firebite” launches Thursday, December 16 on AMC+. The eight-parter follows two Indigenous Australian hunters.

BritBox is expanding its library to include new series “The Tower,” premiering Wednesday, December 1. The drama is based on the novel Post Mortem, by former detective Kate London.

COMING UP

Documentary “Hidden Heroes: The Nisei Soldiers of WWII” premieres on History Channel on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11 at 8p. The film tells the story of the Japanese American soldiers of WWII who became the most decorated military unit for its size and length of service in US history.

“The Wendy Williams Show” will go on without its regular host, as Williams continues to recover from health issues. Michael Rapaport will sub the week of November 8, followed by an “all-new hot talk panel” on November 15, Bill Bellamy on November 16-17, and Jerry Springer and Steve WIlkos co-hosting on November 18-19. The daytime talker has had guest hosts since its October 18 season premiere.

HBO Max’s One Night Stand mobile pop-up, in support of the November 18 premiere of “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” will make stops across three California colleges from November 15-18. Attendees will be treated to a goodie bag, as well as RISE coffee for a caffeine kick and treats from Insomnia Cookies .

MeTV is wishing TV fans “A Very Merry MeTV” with Thanksgiving and holiday-themed episodes from classic TV shows starting Sunday, November 14 at 1:30p, and continuing through Christmas Day.

The Multicultural Media & Correspondents Association’s 6th Annual Multicultural Media Correspondents Dinner is taking place Thursday, November 18 at The National Press Club in Washington. The invitation-only gathering honors BIPOC media industry luminaries whose careers continue to pave the way for the next generation of BIPOC media stakeholders. During the morning of the awards gala, MMCA will also host its BIPOC Community Media Development Summit, which will be live-streamed.

FilmRise has acquired the distribution rights to Marvelous and the Black Hole,” starring Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”) and Miya Cech (“Always Be My Maybe”). The deal gives FilmRise exclusive theatrical, digital and broadcast distribution rights in the US and Canada.

STREAMING

Chicken Soup for the Soul is now available as a FAST channel on Plex, FreeCast, and Redbox, with LG Channels, Stirr, XUMO, and VIZIO’s WatchFree joining in December. Additional platforms will roll out prior to the launch of a full Chicken Soup for the Soul AVOD offering, which will be available around the end of the year.

Global streaming time rose 21% in 3Q21, according to the State of Streaming Report from Conviva. Africa had by far the biggest growth, rising 273%, while North America inched up 2%.

Black listeners have lagged behind the general market when it comes to listening to podcasts, but that’s changing, according to a the first SXM Media, Edison Research and Mindshare Black podcast listener report. More than 12 million Black adults in the US are listening to podcasts every month, with 42% of respondents say they’ve been listening to podcasts for a year or less. Other findings include:.
? The top three podcast categories for Black adults are comedy, music, and health & fitness (the latter being a genre not found in the top rankings among the general population).
? 70% of Black monthly podcast listeners say they listened to a podcast with a Black host in the last month. 47% prefer to listen to podcasts with Black hosts or hosts who are people of color, while 51% say it is important that the podcasts they listen to are hosted by Black podcast hosts and 61% say it is important that the podcasts they listen to include Black stories and perspectives.
? 81% of Black monthly podcast listeners say they would be very or somewhat likely to trust a brand if they heard an advertisement on a podcast with Black hosts.

TECH TALK

Dun & Bradstreet Holdings has entered into agreements to acquire data companies, Eyeota and NetWise. The acquisitions are aimed at extending Dun & Bradstreet’s position in B2B online marketing and enable the combined businesses to provide data and technology for businesses looking to identify, reach and engage high-propensity audiences for multichannel marketing campaigns.

Media execs believe the loss of cookies will hurt revenue, according to a study from Lotame, “Beyond the Cookie: Identity Solution Adoption & Testing Among Marketers and Publishers.” In the survey, 42% of marketers said the loss of cookies will decrease revenue, with nearly 60% (57%) expecting a drop of 10-25% and 31% a drop of 26-50%. “A cookieless future is closer on the horizon and whether or not the industry ‘feels prepared,’ the end result is inevitable,” said Andy Monfried, Founder & CEO of Lotame. “Digital advertising is changing, and identity solutions will be part of that new future.”

DoubleVerify, the software platform for digital media measurement, data and analytics, announced the launch of its Authentic Brand Suitability solution with Tremor International. The launch allows Tremor Video and Unruly’s advertising clients to leverage the pre-bid targeting solution to create a centralized set of brand safety/suitability and fraud controls, and automatically deploy these controls across campaigns and devices. In addition, advertisers within the platform will have access to heightened levels of protection.

US audio media advertising & marketing spending, as well as consumer audio usage and consumer spending on audio media, are on pace for record growth in 2021, amplified by new technologies, changing consumer behaviors and shifting ad budgets, according to new research from PQ Media. Audio ad & marketing spending is forecast to grow 14.4% this year to $18.06 billion, the fastest growth rate in 40 years. The caveat: the growth spike follow the steepest drops on record in pandemic-impacted 2020.

GOING GLOBAL

Survivor” is returning to Romania. PRO TV announced the conclusion of negotiations with Acun Media, which has produced the format for several markets.

Discovery+ makes its debut in Brazil on November 9. “Brazil has always been a key market for Discovery. We’ve enjoyed serving our fans there for more than 25 years and we’re thrilled to make Brazil the first country in Latin America to receive the discovery+ product, fully customized for the Brazilian audience,” said Fernando Medin, President and General Manager of Discovery Latin America.

Studio 100 Media is going back in time for “Vegesaurs,” an action-comedy CGI-animated TV series produced by t Australian producer Cheeky Little for the Australian Broadcasting Company and France TV. Principal production funding is provided by Screen Australia, with Studio 100 as co-investor.

MTV announced an international, six-part YouTube series, “Queerpiphany,” inviting queer celebrities to talk about the seminal moments in pop-culture history that had an impact on shaping their queer experiences. The series is hosted by activist, model, and social media celebrity, Munroe Bergdorf, and Welsh drag queen and former RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star, Tayce. Queerpiphany will launch across MTV International’s YouTube and Facebook channels on November 11.

Electric Entertainment’sLeverage: Redemption has been picked up by IMDb TV for the UK; NBCUniversal International Networks & DTC has picked up linear and SVOD rights for Universal TV in Africa; and Now TV in Hong Kong has acquired the SVOD rights for their new subscription streaming service, Now Studio.
