IN THE NEWS

Daytime and late night are prime times for Gen Z, according to a new study from MAGNA Media Trials and Samsung Ads. “Capturing the Attention of our Youngest Generations, The Digital Advertisers’ Guide to Reaching Gen Z + Millennials on Connected TV” explores highest attention to ads by time of day on CTV, average attention spans by content type and their reactions to repeating ads. One finding: Gen Z spends the most time looking at ads on CTV during late-night, locking in for an average 9.63 seconds per spot, while millennials dial up focus during traditional primetime at 9.8 seconds per spot. “Each new generation claims their own unique viewing behaviors, as evidenced by the shift toward CTV and short-form content,” said Kara Manatt, MAGNA’s EVP, Managing Director, Intelligence Solutions. “Our research hints that other trendlines are more eternal, as Millennials, who are raising families and entrenched at work, clock peak viewability being during primetime and Gen Z, still by majority students, having the bandwidth to watch during daytime and late night.”

Hulu renewed “Futurama” for seasons 13 and 14. The Matt Groening adult animated series premiered on Fox in 1999, ran on Comedy Central from 2009-13, and was revived by Hulu in 2022.

Also coming back is Nickelodeon’s “The Tiny Chef Show,” for season two. Produced in association with Imagine Television and Nickelodeon Animation, the 22-episode sophomore run will follow Chef as he embarks new herbivorous adventures.

The upcoming 12th season of “Letterkenny” will be its last. All six episodes of the Canadian comedy’s final run drop on Hulu December 26.

Fox Corporation reported total quarterly revenues of $3.21 billion, up from $3.19 billion for the prior year quarter. Advertising revenues decreased 2% as the broadcast of the FIFA Women’s World Cup at FOX Sports and continued growth at Tubi were more than offset by comparably lower political advertising revenues at the FOX Television Stations and the impact of elevated supply in the direct response marketplace at FOX News Media. Other revenues increased 2%. During an earnings call, CEO Lachlan Murdoch touted Tubi’s success, surpassing 70 million active viewers in September. “Tubi will be the way our audiences primarily engage with entertainment in the future,” Murdoch said. “It’s a core part of our business.”’

Highlights of Paramount’s 3Q23 results: Revenue increased 38% year-over-year; subscription revenue grew 46% to $1.3B, driven by subscriber growth and pricing increases for Paramount+, and revenue from pay-per-view events; advertising revenue rose 18%, reflecting growth from Paramount+ and Pluto TV; and global viewing hours across Paramount+ and Pluto TV grew 46%. Said Bob Bakish, President and CEO, “In Q3, we successfully grew Direct-to-Consumer revenue and Paramount+ subscribers while narrowing DTC losses over 30%. In fact, we now expect DTC losses in 2023 will be lower than in 2022 – meaning streaming investment peaked ahead of plan. Looking ahead, we remain on the path to achieving significant total company earnings growth in 2024.”

NATAS announced the nominations for the Second Annual Children’s & Family Emmy® Awards. “Programming created for children’s and family viewing has a long history of leading the way in innovation and storytelling,” said Brent Stanton, Head of Daytime and Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. “In this year specifically, a year so impacted by artists fighting for fair recognition of their true value, it is more important than ever to honor the excellence of their talents and achievements.” The list of nominees can be found here: https://theemmys.tv/.

HBO and Max CEO and Chairman Casey Bloys apologized to TV journalists for employing fake Twitter accounts to lash out at critics of HBO series. At the start of yesterday’s presentation on HBO and Max’s 2024 slate of shows, Bloys said, in response to a Rolling Stone report detailing the allegation, “I want the shows to be great. I want people to love them. I want you all to love them. It’s very important to me what you all think of the shows. So when you think of that mindset, and then think of 2020 and 2021, I’m home, working from home and spending an unhealthy amount of scrolling through Twitter. And I come up with a very, very dumb idea to vent my frustration…. as many of you know, I have progressed over the past couple of years to using DMs. So now, when I take issue with something in a review, or take issue with something I see, I DM many of you, and many of you are gracious enough to engage with me in a back and forth and I think that is probably a much healthier way to go about this.”

Bloys was less clear on whether the upcoming twelfth season of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” will be its last. “We generally leave that up to Larry,” said Bloys, referring to series creator and star Larry David. “I think he’s thinking about what he wants to do. He knows it’s been an open invitation, so I think he’s going to decide if he wants to do more or whether this is going to be the final season, I would guess before it airs.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Season two of “The Last of Us” and third seasons of “Euphoria,”The White Lotus” and “Welcome to Derry” likely won’t premiere until 2025, said Casey Bloys on Thursday. The writers and actors strikes contributed to late starts for the series. On the other hand, season two of “Game of Thrones” spinoff “House of the Dragon,” with a British cast under Equity contracts, will debut in early summer 2024.

Also debuting later than planned is FX Productions’ “Shogun,” an adaptation of the James Clavell bestseller. The limited series, originally expected to arrive in 2023, will premiere in February 2024 on Hulu.

Taylor-made: The second half of season five of Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” is slated to premiere in November 2024, followed by the debut of spinoff “2024.” Prequel “1944” is on the way, following prequels “1883” and “1923.” “Within five years, we grew ‘Yellowstone’ from a hit US cable show with five million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions – and, we’re just getting started,” said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios. “Our new planned spinoffs, ‘1944’ and ‘2024,’ will take audiences on a thrilling, new and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon – thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan.”

Four series are in development at Magnolia Network, set to debut beginning in 2024. Series include talent competitions “Second Chance Stage” (w/t) and “Human vs Hamster,” social experiment “Back to the Frontier” (w/t), and roller staking competition “Roller Jam” (w/t). “We recognized a white space in Max for fun, family-friendly content with unique formats and imaginative competition shows,” said Allison Page, President of Magnolia Network. “We seized the opportunity to use our storytelling expertise to help bring these concepts to life and are thrilled to partner with Max to build a content offering the whole family will love.”

TECH

Captify announced the launch of TV Search Lift, a proprietary TV study that evaluates the success and outcomes of CTV campaigns using authentic onsite search data. TV Search Lift is aimed at enabling brands to measure their campaigns based on shifts in consumer behavior, understand changes in brand perception and sentiment inspired by a campaign and determine the effectiveness of a brand message and how it resonates with target audiences. “In order to understand the impact of CTV campaigns, marketers commonly have to rely on unvalidated and outdated data sources, which can leave knowledge gaps for advertisers,” said Britt Augenfeld, VP of Video and Advanced TV at Captify. “With the largest collection of search data outside the walled gardens, Captify’s onsite search data provides a window into consumer true and authentic attitudes towards a brand, its competitors, and the market overall. Now, advertisers can identify consumer interest and purchase intent based on search behaviors, giving them a true measure of campaign impact and success, helping fill those gaps and enabling better CTV outcomes.”
