IN THE NEWS

Facebook is shutting down its Face Recognition system. “People who’ve opted in will no longer be automatically recognized in photos and videos and we will delete more than a billion people’s individual facial recognition templates,” said Jerome Pesenti, VP of Artificial Intelligence, in a blog post on Tuesday. Facebook’s facial recognition technology has been controversial since its launch in 2010, leading to consequences including government investigations and a class action lawsuit that was settled for $650 million.

Omnicom Media is launching an initiative to address “fundamental flaws and gaps” in CTV advertising. “The category is growing, but so are the concerns about safety and transparency that make clients resistant to shifting spend into CTV,” said OMG North America Chief Activation Officer Megan Pagliuca. “Unless we as an industry — agencies and marketers, platforms, publishers and providers — adopt shared standards to mitigate the barriers to investment, these issues will increasingly undermine CTV ROI, and erode the marketer confidence that is fundamental to long-term category growth.” Among the recommendations in The Connected TV Signals Standardization Initiative are protocols and practices for inventory, identity and fraud-prevention.

Former Pennsylvanian senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has joined Newsmax as Senior Political Analyst, making his debut Tuesday night with special election coverage. Santorum said he is looking forward to bringing his “common-sense, blue-collar conservative voice” to the news net. CNN “parted ways” with Santorum as a political commentator in May, after he drew fire for comments he made about Native Americans at a Young America’s Foundation event.

A court denied the request of “Tiger King” star Carole Baskin and her husband to issue a restraining order for “Tiger King 2,” slated for release on Netflix on Wednesday, November 17. While Baskin alleges the series includes “unauthorized” footage of her, the judge said, “While the Court understands the Baskins’ frustration, it does not appear that inclusion of Defendants’ footage of the Baskins will cause any immediate harm that cannot be compensated with monetary damages.” So it looks like the show will go on – and so will the lawsuit.

HBO Max has renewed “Sweet Life: Los Angeles” for season two. “We are thrilled with the success of ‘Sweet Life: Los Angeles’,” said Jennifer O’Connell, EVP, Non-Fiction and Live-Action Family, HBO Max. “The incredibly talented Issa Rae and her producing partners delivered an elevated, purposeful series, which featured the fun, inspiring and challenging moments that young adults face navigating relationships and careers.”

The Justice Department is seeking to block ViacomCBS’ sale of Simon & Schuster to Penguin Random House, on the grounds the combined company would have too much power in the industry. “Just five publishers control the US publishing industry,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland. “If the world’s largest book publisher is permitted to acquire one of its biggest rivals, it will have unprecedented control over this important industry.” ViacomCBS started the process of selling Simon & Schuster after the merger of Viacom and CBS.

Nexstar Media Group reported 3Q21 results that included net revenue of $1,157,012, an increase of 3.5% from the year-ago quarter.
