The New York Times announced that it’s making its site available as a Tor Onion Service. Users will be able to access the site through a router on Tor, the anonymous internet-browsing software. In addition to individuals who use Tor out of simple personal preference, the move is specifically aimed toward people who would otherwise have trouble accessing the Times’ content, along with people who could face repercussions for doing so. For instance, some governments surveil internet use, while others block certain websites. Making the Times available as a Tor Onion Service will make it easier for users in such countries to access the site safely and anonymously.
BuzzFeed is changing up the way it covers Hollywood. The company has parted ways with three top members of its editorial staff: Entertainment Editor Jamie Etkin, who’d been with BuzzFeed News for four years; Deputy Entertainment Editor Katie Hasty; and Senior Entertainment Editor Jarrett Wieselman. In a memo to staff explaining the changes, Head of U.S. News Shani Hilton cited “holes” in BuzzFeed’s overall coverage of Harvey Weinstein. Hilton wrote that BuzzFeed News’s coverage will now be divided into three areas: An entertainment enterprise team, overseen by Senior Features Editor Marisa Carroll; a breaking news team, led by Weekend Editor David Mack, focused specifically on the entertainment business; and an in-depth reporting and analysis team, reporting to Deputy Entertainment Editor Kovie Biakolo.

Facebook announced that its new ad transparency features will go live in November. When viewing a Facebook Page, users will be able to click a “view ads” tab, which will bring up all of the ads that the Page is currently running. Facebook first announced the new transparency features early this month. Among other things, the tools are designed to let users see any ad run by any organization, as opposed to just the ones targeting them. The new updates were introduced, in large part, due to revelations that Russian-bought election ads appeared on Facebook’s platform in 2016.
PROGRAMMING
American Vandal has been renewed for a second season. The true-crime style mockumentary series debuted on Netflix last month. Season 1 focuses on a high school-aged documentarian who tries to determine whether a recently expelled classmate is truly guilty of spray-painting teachers’ cars with phallic images. (Side note: It’s very funny and surprisingly engrossing.) CBS Television, 3Arts, and Funny or Die collaborated on the production. The new season is slated to debut in 2018.
APPS + PLATFORMS
YouTube viewers are now spending 100 million hours a day watching content on TV screens, according to a new announcement from Google CEO Sundar Pichai. It’s the first time that Google has revealed the watch time for living room devices. Earlier in 2017, the company said that YouTube’s total watch time across all devices amounts to more than 1 billion hours per day. (Some rudimentary math will tell you that living room devices now account for roughly ten percent of YouTube viewing.) All told, the company says that YouTube now has 1.5 billion users, who watch an average of 60 minutes of videos daily.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Netflix has promoted Jessica Neal to Chief Talent Officer. She’ll oversee the divisions that handle recruiting, HR, coaching functions, and culture. Neal takes the reins from former Chief Talent Officer Tawni Cruz, who left the company this past spring. Cruz had been with Netflix for ten years. Neal first joined the company in 2006, but left in 2013 to become HR head at Coursera. She returned to Netflix in June, taking on the role of VP of Talent. In that capacity, she oversaw human resources for the company’s product engineering division.
Magic Leap, the secretive mixed reality start-up that’s now raised over $1.8 billion in funding, just named John Gaeta as its new SVP of Creative Strategy. Gaeta formerly served as Co-Founder and Executive Creative Director of ILMxLab, the immersive entertainment division of Lucasfilm’s ILM (Industrial Light & Magic). It’s likely that Gaeta won’t be saying goodbye to Lucasfilm entirely: Last year, Magic Leap struck a deal with the studio to co-produce Star Wars-based mixed reality experiences. Magic Leap has also been working on a set of advanced augmented reality glasses; no word yet on when exactly they’ll be ready for consumers.
