Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos hinted at the future of the service’s movie business at the MIPCOM keynote yesterday. He said Netflix plans to serve on-demand audiences and to continue to “restore choice and options” for viewers with day-and-date released movies. Additionally, Sarandos said Netflix is expanding into niche genres, like documentaries and independent films. “The films used to only be available to elite audiences, and we are looking to bring that content out to the rest of the world,” he said. Netflix recently signed movie deals with Adam Sandler and will release the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel the same day it appears in Imax theatres.

YouTube is claiming that Google Preferred, its advertising program that’s geared toward the top five percent of its channels, is close to selling out just six months after launch. According to the Wall Street Journal, some of Preferred’s 14 categories (comedy, beauty, food and more) are completely spoken for, through deals with agencies like Digitas, OMD, IPG, Carat, SMG. “This was a very different way for advertisers to buy,” Google Managing Director Torrence Boone told the WSJ. “We desired to tap into a much more TV-like content pool and in spite of difficult upfront season for cable and broadcast, we delivered on that.”
ComScore released a report measuring digital viewership trends on Netflix. From a survey of 1,159 users, the data found:
– Subscribers were more likely to time-shift: 45 percent of subscribers compared to 27 percent of non-Netflix users will watch a favorite show when they want, not when it airs on TV. They are also more likely to binge view on TV screens than on mobile devices.
– 50 percent of the surveyed millennials subscribe to Netflix: 19 percent have Hulu and nine percent subscribe to Amazon Prime.
– 44 percent of Netflix subs watch through an OTT device, while 27 percent use computers and 21 percent prefer gaming consoles or Blu-ray players.
– Those with kids were more likely to have Netflix: 40 percent of households with more than three people have Netflix, and 25 percent of households with two people have the service.

Blacklist: NBC (nbcblacklist) / 39K / 10K / 25% / 1.4M
So what do these numbers mean? “College Humor launched a second channel and started uploading videos on September 10, with 14 videos so far; it’s showing great growth out of the gates, like many second channels that capitalize on the audience of the first,” Tubular Co-Founder and Vice President of EnterpriseAllison Sterntold Cynopsis. “Another trend we’re seeing is YouTube channels for specific TV shows, now that the fall season is in full swing; Gotham is getting a lot of attention from the YT community, as is Dancing with the Stars – perhaps because YouTube Sensation Bethany Mota joined the cast. Additionally, Buzzfeed Violet drops from #1 to #4, but still makes the list.”
Adaptly added four executives to its New York office: Bryn Sanders joined as VP of Revenue, East, Logan Moore as Director, Strategic Accounts, Charles Timko as Director, Strategic Accounts and Miles Rutter as Account Executive.
