Eye-tracking: In virtual reality, eye-tracking refers to a VR headset’s ability to track a user’s pupil movements, and then adjust the image accordingly. Eye-tracking technology can also be used to let a user adjust or control aspects of an image with their eyes. None of the most well-known commercial headsets have eye-tracking capability just yet, but multiple companies are working to perfect the technology.

Well, reports of Twitter’s potential sale are vanishing almost as quickly as they arose. Following recent reports that Disney and Salesforce are unlikely to bid on the company, Twitter’s stocks closed down over 11%. It hasn’t been the best year to be a Twitter shareholder: The company’s stock has lost a quarter of its value this year alone, and now sits below sits well below its 2013 IPO value. At least one person might be happy, though. According to an earlier Bloomberg report, CEO Jack Dorsey has been against selling from the beginning. Nonetheless, Twitter’s board can overrule him should it ever come to that.

Back in April, BET Networks launched a revamped slate of digital offerings, including an improved mobile app and website. Now the Viacom-owned network is taking its efforts to bigger screens. BET has launched TV Everywhere apps for Apple TV, Chromecast, and Roku devices. Like its mobile TV Everywhere app, the new service offers unlimited access to the network’s original series and specials, access to BET’s live broadcast, and a good deal of digital-exclusive content. The app, available to authenticated pay-TV subs, is launching just ahead of the October 11 premieres of three BET series: The reality shows ‘The Gary Owen Show’ and ‘Ink, Paper, Scissors,’ and the Kevin Hart-starring reality-TV parody Real Husbands of Hollywood.

You can’t successfully cater to almost 200 territories if you don’t offer them something original. Netflix knows that full well; so far it’s debuted foreign-language originals in France, Mexico, and Japan. Now, the streaming giant’s first Brazilian series is on the horizon. 3%, a futuristic thriller set in a dystopian future, is set for a November 25 global release. Oscar-nominated cinematographer Cesar Charlone (City of God) will direct.
Licensing the rights to live events is a huge source of revenue for the sports entertainment industry. And according to a new study from PricewaterhouseCoopers, it’s set to become an even bigger source, largely thanks to digital platforms. The study projects that TV, online, and mobile sports rights will be the largest part of the sports entertainment sector in two years, largely due to increased streaming and OTT demand. PwC projects that the rights for broadcast, cable, Internet, and mobile rights will hit $19.9 billion in 2018. Meanwhile, sponsorship revenue will sit at $17.5 billion by 2018 – which, admittedly, is still not too shabby.
The ListenFirstTelevision Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Fusion, Univision Communications’ millennial-oriented digital and TV news division, has promoted Dodai Stewart to editor-in-chief. (Fusion is also moving editorial oversight of its news operations to New York.) Stewart originally joined Fusion from Gawker Media’s Jezebel, serving first as Fusion’s Director of Culture Coverage and then as Executive Editor. Meanwhile, now-former editor-in-chief Alexis Madrigal will become an editor-at-large for Fusion, writing about topics including technology, trade, and housing.
Conde Nast has nabbed a new exec from Verizon’s AOL. Jim Norton, who has been with AOL since 2009 (most recently as Global Head of Media Sales), will serve as Conde Nast’s Chief Business Officer and President of Revenue. In the newly created role, Norton will oversee revenue operations for all 22 of Conde Nast’s brands. Based in New York, he’ll report directly to President and CEO Bob Sauerberg.
Mattel Creations, Mattel’s content division, has named two new execs. Cheryl Gresham has been named VP of Global Media & Marketing Integration, overseeing media strategy. Justin Richardson has been named VP of Content Distribution and Strategy, managing Mattel Creations’ content distribution portfolio. Gresham joints Mattel from Taco Bell. Richardson joins from the advisory firm Atlas Consultancy Ltd. He’s also held positions at Playboy Enterprises and Warner Bros.
The mobile brand advertising company Kargo has hired Samantha Zurek as Regional Vice President, Midwest. She’ll oversee sales and lead the company’s sales operational teams in the Midwest region. Zurek joins the company from the Samba TV, a specialist in smart TV apps and advertising.
