Opt-In: An opt-in feature or service is one that requires an individual to give a company permission to use data that they’ve collected about said individual. For instance, a company might require mobile phone users to opt in before sending them targeted marketing.
TOP NEWS
While Netflix spent 2016 raising prices for many subscribers, Hulu is heading in a different direction. The SVOD service, which dropped its free version in August, is lowering the introductory price of its cheapest subscription tier. The $7.99 version of Hulu, which is partially ad-supported, will now cost $5.99 per month for the first 12 months of a subscription. (It’ll return to $7.99 after that.) The new price is only available to new subs. Hulu’s ad-free version costs $11.99 monthly.
As first reported by Variety, Google’s newest VR hardware looks set to make its debut. In addition to its new flagship Pixel smartphones, Google will unveil its Daydream VR headset today, according to Variety’s report. The mobile-based Daydream platform, which was initially announced in May, will work only with Google’s Android operating system. Variety reports that the headset could sell for as little $79. By comparison, Samsung’s mobile-based Gear VR headset sells for $99.
PLATFORMS + DEVICES
Credit to Apple: They somehow found a way to link Apple TV to out-of-home entertainment. Apple’s set-top box now hosts a StubHub app, enabling users to buy tickets to sporting events and concerts directly through their television. It’s the first ticketing service to reach Apple TV.

Sky, the European pay-TV company owned by Rupert Murdoch, is out with a new VR app. Simply called Sky VR, the free app debuts with two original VR experiences, including one starring soccer player David Beckham. The other is a production of Giselle. (That’s a 19th century ballet with music by Adolphe Adam – but surely you knew that already.) The new VR experiences are the first in a promised series of Sky VR exclusives. Other already-commissioned productions include titles such as Sky News – U.S. Elections and Tutankhamun’s Tomb The Search for Nefertiti. The new experiences are being produced both by third-party partners and by the in-house Sky VR Studios. Aside from its exclusives, the app also features VR videos from Sky’s partners.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is getting in on VR this week, and 20th Century Fox is helping. In a three-day event dubbed the “Reality, Virtually” Hackathon, developers will gather at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts to build VR apps. Winners will receive more than $15,000 in cash and prizes. The Fox Innovation Lab is sponsoring the Hackathon, and will be on-hand to judge entries and mentor participants. Fox isn’t new to VR; The company debuted the Martian VR Experience, a spin-off of the 2015 film The Martian, in January. The Hackathon runs from October 7 to October 10.

The ListenFirstTelevision Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
If you’re a political junkie (and the writer of this newsletter most assuredly is), then this comes as a bit of a shock: BuzzFeed reporter Andrew Kaczynski is moving to CNN along with his research team. For those who don’t know, Kaczynski has made a name for himself as an excellent researcher, unearthing candidates’ past quotes and interviews. (You probably know that Donald Trump, a self-described Iraq War opponent, actually expressed support for the war in a 2002 interview with Howard Stern. It was Kaczynski who dug up that interview.) One of the most under-discussed CNN storylines is the network’s robust recent growth in the digital space. And as Kaczynski’s hire would indicate, the network has taken particularly great efforts to beef up its digital politics team.

The show’s protagonist, a talentless yet hyper-confident YouTube performer named Miranda Sings, has already achieved major popularity.
