IN THE NEWS

Quibi is shutting down. The short-form mobile video streamer has struggled since its launch in April, as the pandemic pushed millions of millennials from their phones to screens at home, and the streaming space grew increasingly crowded. The Jeffrey Katzenberg-founded service tried to pivot to TV, including launching this week on Android TV, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV, but will now shutter to return as much money to investors as possible. “While we have enough capital to continue operating for a significant period of time, we made the difficult decision to wind down the business, return cash to our shareholders, and say goodbye to our talented colleagues with grace,” said CEO Meg Whitman. “We continue to believe that there is an attractive market for premium, short-form content. Over the coming months we will be working hard to find buyers for these valuable assets who can leverage them to their full potential.”

What was Quibi’s downfall? Launching an unknown streaming brand against the likes of Disney+, Apple TV+ and NBCU’s Peacock didn’t help, Tal Chalozin, Co-founder and CTO of Innovid, noted to Cynopsis. Also, “It’s hard to launch without a deep library, which creates the feeling that you’ve always got something to watch. It’s hard to launch on a mobile only experience (they changed over time, but still it was very mobile in mind) versus a distribution strategy which favors many apps, devices, services etc.” Last but not least? Said Chalozin, “It’s hard to win when you set SUCH high expectations.”

There’s a “high probability” that President Trump will release the interview he did with Lesley Stahl ahead of its airing on 60 Minutes on Sunday. That’s according to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, who told Fox Business News, “when you have a 60 Minutes reporter, they should be a reporter not an opinion journalist. And [Stahl] came across more like an opinion journalist.” While Trump reportedly abruptly cut the White House interview short, frustrated over Stahl’s line of questioning, and did not return for an appearance he was scheduled to make with Vice President Pence, Meadows told FBN, “He didn’t walk out.” 60 Minutes said the White House agreed only to record the interview for its archives; on Wednesday, Trump tweeted photos taken during the segment’s taping.

Digital basic networks rated “must have” among cable subscribers were ranked by Beta Research, based on a national study conducted in June/July. Among total adults, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries topped the chart, with 23% respondents saying it was a must-have channel, followed by Cooking Channel, NFL Network, and FXM: FX Movie Channel (all 21%), and BBC America and Nat Geo Wild (20%). All of these networks were also among the top six nets in the 2019, 2018 and 2017 surveys. Rankings of Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and Cooking Channel increased in the 2020 study.

Hallmark Movies & Mysteries also topped the list of networks named among respondents’ top five favorite digital basic cable nets (24%). Next were Cooking Channel (17%), BBC America(13%), FXM: FX Movie Channel (11%), and OWN (10%) among total women; and NFL Network (20%), BBC America (17%), FXM: FX Movie Channel (15%), Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, ESPNEWS and Fox Business Network (all 14%) among total men. Rankings increased for BBC America, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and Fox Business Network among men and BBC America and OWN among women versus 2019.

TikTok is expanding its enforcement against hate speech and hate ideologies to include “neighboring ideologies” like white nationalism, and statements that have their origins in those ideologies. “We know there’s always more we can do which is why we are taking further action to remove misinformation and hurtful stereotypes about Jewish, Muslim and other communities,” said TikTok in a blog post. “This includes misinformation about notable Jewish individuals and families who are used as proxies to spread antisemitism.
