AMC Networks has partnered with The Trade Desk and Magnite to enable programmatic and addressable buying on linear television. “This is a huge development, for us and for the entire industry, unlocking the value of linear inventory by providing advanced programmatic buying, with full addressability, on linear television,” said Evan Adlman, SVP of advanced Advertising and Digital Partnerships for AMC Networks. “We have made a commitment to make 100 percent of our linear reach addressable, and we believe in the enhanced efficiency and automation of programmatic buying.”
Omnicom Media Group announced it is working with the National Minority Supplier Development Council to certify media outlets that meet its criteria as “diverse content creators.” The certification will be included in the media selection process. OMG said it has established a “grant program” that will reimburse the application fee to needy media content suppliers applying for certification, and suppliers who earn certification will be eligible to participate in “a comprehensive media and advertising education program” created by OMG.
“Killer Camp” was yanked from The CW after two low-rated episodes. The adaptation of a British non-scripted format that has campers competing to expose a “killer” among them launched to 0.05 in the A18-49 demo, and dipped to 0.03 for episode two.
But The CW has programming in the pipeline: The net has picked up Italian drama series “Leonardo,” starring Aidan Turner (“Poldark”) as Leonardo da Vinci, and Australian dramedy “Bump,” focused on an over-achieving 17-year-old.
Netflix employees angered by the streamer’s Dave Chappelle stand-up special, “Closer,” have planned a rally for today outside Netflix’s LA headquarter. While some staffers have found the show transphobic and harmful to transgender people, Netflix heads Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos have maintained the special is not harmful and is popular with viewers.
Promoting her new book, Going There, Katie Couric opened up on “Today” about her former “Today” co-host, Matt Lauer, and her bumpy primetime tenure. “It was devastating but also disgusting,” said Couric of Lauer, who was fired in 2017 amid allegations of sexual misconduct. “What I realized was there was a side of Matt I never knew.” As for her 2006-11 tenure as anchor of “CBS Evening News,” Couric said, “I don’t think people internally really accepted me. I thought we were much further along when it came to sexism. Because I enjoyed such a great position at the ‘Today’ show I thought America was ready for a female anchor of the evening news, and I think we were just not as far along as I naively thought.”
CNN’s John King revealed on air that he has multiple sclerosis. King shared the diagnosis during a discussion about vaccine mandates. “I am immunocompromised,” King said. “I have multiple sclerosis. So I am grateful you are all vaccinated….I don’t like the government telling me what to do. I don’t like my boss telling me what to do. In this case, it’s important.”
The show will go on: Despite the Hungarian government’s passing of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, MTV’s Europe Music Awards will remain as scheduled in Hungary this year. In a note to staff, MTV President and CEO Chris McCarthy said that while his initial reaction had been to move the event, after consulting with LGTBQ+ advocates he realized MTV could “use the opportunity to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Hungary and around the world as we continue to fight for equality for all.” The awards will recognize young LGBTQ+ activists with MTV’s Generation Change Awards in partnership with the All Out advocacy group. The show, which takes place November 14, had been scheduled for last year, before the legislation was passed, but was postponed due to the pandemic.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Filmmaker Frank Marshall (“The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”) is directing and producing “Carole King & James Taylor: Just Call Out My Name,” a concert doc premiering on CNN and HBO Max. “I’ve been listening to and playing their music my whole life, so it’s especially meaningful to me and such an honor to be able to put together this special reunion concert by these two extraordinarily gifted friends,” said Marshall.
Uma Thurman (“Kill Bill”) has joined “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber” as Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington. Brian Koppelman and David Levien (“Billions”) and Beth Schacter (“Soundtrack”) will executive produce, write and serve as showrunners on the Showtime series.
Tubi’s first original animated series, “The Freak Brothers,” debuts with the first two episodes on Sunday, November 14. Produced by WTG Enterprises, the eight-episode show chronicles the escapades of a trio of stoners and their cat, who wake up from a 50-year nap after smoking a magical strain of weed in 1969. Stars include Woody Harrelson (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), John Goodman (“The Conners”), Tiffany Haddish (“Girls Trip”) and Pete Davidson (“Saturday Night Live”).
Lifetime gave a thumbs up to three new original thrillers for 2022. The trio of thrillers includes “Single Black Female” starring Raven Goodwin (“The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel”) and Amber Riley (“Glee”), about a new friendship with a dark secret; “Line Sisters,” headlined by LeToya Luckett (“Greenleaf”), Kierra Sheard-Kelly (“The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel”), Ta’Rhonda Jones (“Empire”), and Drew Sidora (“CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story”), about four sorority sisters harboring a deadly secret; and “Vanished: Searching for My Sister,” starring Tatyana Ali (“Love That Girl”) as twins – one that goes missing and one that will do anything to uncover the truth about her missing sister.
Netflix greenlit YA series “XO, Kitty,” a spinoff of the streamer’s original film trilogy, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” The dramedy comes from Awesomeness and ACE Entertainment. Jenny Han, author of the books on which the franchise is based, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Sascha Rothchild.

STREAMING
While the streaming pie grows, Netflix’s slice is shrinking, as more streamers enter the market. According to Parrot Analytics, Netflix’s share of global and US demand for digital originals has hit a record low, down to 45.8% globally, and 43.7% in the US. In 2Q21, Netflix was at 48.3% globally, and 46% in the US. The total global demand for Netflix originals grew 3.3% compared to Q2 2021, and is up 74% since Q2 2019, but global demand for original content from Netflix’s competitors grew 14.3% in 3Q21, and is up 196% since 2Q19, before competitors like Disney+, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ entered the market.
Not that Netflix isn’t still going gangbusters. The company beat forecasts for growth in 3Q21, hitting 213 million subscribers globally, and handily beat earnings per share estimates, with $3.13. Household viewership for surprise smash “Squid Game,” which has become the most-viewed original title in Netflix history, has risen to 142 million.
Netflix noted it will turn from reporting the number of households or accounts that watch its shows, to reporting on hours viewed. “We think engagement as measured by hours viewed is a slightly better indicator of the overall success of our titles and member satisfaction. It also matches how outside services measure TV viewing and gives proper credit to rewatching,” said the company in a letter to shareholders.
Fuse Media inked a content deal with BBC Studios that will bring more than 60 hours of programming to its Fuse Beat streaming brand. The deal includes the first four seasons of “Luther,” as well as the US premiere of British sketch show, “Famalam.” FAST brand Fuse Beat launched in partnership with Quincy Newell’s Twentyone14 Media and Cinedigm earlier this year.
TECH TALK
The tech industry responded swiftly to a bill that would take disciplinary action on online platforms. The American Innovation and Choice Online Act would prevent larger platforms from keeping another business from interoperating with a dominant platform of other business; from requiring a business to buy a dominant platform’s wares to get preferred placement; from misusing a business’s data to compete against it; and from biasing search in their favor. The bill allows civil penalties of up to 15% of US revenue, as well as stiff penalties for CEOs. “The bill allocates vast new powers to the FTC, allowing the commission to ignore the consumer welfare standard, while imposing massive fines with minimal due process,” said Gary Shapiro, President of the Consumer Technology Association. “Further, the bill will take away features and functions that millions of Americans love and use in their everyday lives. Say goodbye to Amazon Prime free shipping, Google maps in search results, preinstalled iPhone apps and many more.”
The internet economy grew seven times faster than the total US economy during the past four years, according to a study commissioned by IAB. The internet economy’s contribution to the US GDP grew 22% per year since 2016, in a national economy that grows between two to three percent per year. In 2020 alone, it contributed $2.45 trillion to the United States’ $21.18 trillion GDP. Since IAB began measuring the economic impact of the internet in 2008, the internet’s contribution to GDP has grown eightfold, from $300 billion to $2.45 trillion.
Comcast Corp. has launched the sales of its XClass TV, a smart TV without the need for a cable TV subscription, loaded with hundreds of streaming apps and TV services including Peacock, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video and more. The 4K TV sets are made in partnership with TV set manufacturer Hisense .
3PD isn’t dead yet, according to Lotame. The data company announced its US third-party data sales increased by more than 30% from 1H20 to 1H21, while globally, third-party audience segments have seen a 41% increase in data sales YoY, with demographics remaining the highest revenue generating category. “While many are declaring contextual targeting as the only solution for the digital identity shift – our data tells a different story,” said Brian O’Connor, General Manager of Lotame’s Global Data Exchange. “The market is in fact heavily investing in demographic information in the form of third-party data buys because it plays an integral part in the holistic view of the consumer.”

The partnership will allow clients to increase relevancy and reach of their messages through digital out-of-home channels. “Our buyers are eager to apply Epsilon’s unique audience segments – especially in the B2B, health, and lifestyle categories – to their DOOH activations,” said Laura Kasakoff, Data Partnerships Director at Vistar Media.
