IN THE NEWS

Netflix announced its new subscription tier, Basic with Ads, will launch November 3 and cost $6.99/month. There will be 4-5 minutes of ads per hour, though marquee original films will be limited to pre-roll spots to “preserve the cinematic model,” said Netflix COO Greg Peters. Some series and movies will not be available at launch, due to licensing restrictions, and users will not be able to download titles. The new tier will arrive ahead of the scheduled debut of Disney+’s ad-supported offering, priced at $7.99.

Carriage disputes threaten to cast a pall over weekend viewing plans, with two deals set to expire. Fox Corp. alerted customers, “We regret that Altice continues to demand special treatment and reject marketplace terms, compelling us to alert our loyal viewers of a potential blackout of all Fox channels by Optimum,” while Nexstar Media Group warned Verizon Fios customers that stations could be “forced off your lineup and important programming you pay for could disappear.”

Trevor Noah’s last day hosting Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” will be Thursday, December 8. Leading up to Noah’s last day, the show will look back at the best moments of his seven-year run.

Rather than smart TVs replacing SMPs outright, many viewers use smart TVs and SMPs as complements to each other, according to Hub Entertainment Research study, “Streaming TV: Built-In vs Plugged-In?”. Eighty-three percent of respondents reported having an internet-connected smart TV or SMP, and 44% of homes own both types of devices. “The question of ‘built-in vs plugged-in’ is surprisingly revealed in this study to be ‘it doesn’t really matter.’ Whether people are using a smart TV or a streaming media player, their habits are very similar,” said David Tice, Senior Consultant to Hub and co-author of the study. “In the short term, both devices are going to co-exist – streaming media players are a long way from being replaced by smart TVs, and can’t be ignored.”
