The biggest winner from last Monday’s outage on Facebook was Snapchat, which saw time spent by existing users rise 23% week-over week, according to Sensor Tower. Also benefitting from the glitch, which shut down WhatsApp and Messenger, were Telegram, which experienced a 18% increase in time spent on the chat app, and Signal, up 15%.

Apple has made it easier for App Store users to report issues like scams and illegal content. The “Report a Problem” link has been returned to App Store product pages, and also allows users to report issues with free apps that do not include in-app purchases.

Snap is rolling out new ways for Snapchat creators to earn money on the app. New programs include Spotlight Challenges, an extension of the Spotlight user-generated content section, which promises cash payouts of $25,000 or more to creators with the most engaging videos that use specified AR lenses, sounds or topics.

Snap is making harder for users to earn money in one way: selling drugs. To keep users safer from the fentanyl crisis, Snap said it has improved detection capabilities to remove drug dealers from the platform before they are able to engage with users. In-app reporting tools have also been upgraded.

Google’s next Pixel event will take place October 19. Getting their official unveilings will be the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, powered by custom mobile chip Tensor.

Twitter is testing a new feature that would help users avoid conversations with “bad vibes.” A prompt would alert people that a conversation they’re about to join are “heated or intense.”

An app to help content producers create live shows with the ability to interact with the audience has launched. Co-founded by entrepreneur/“Shark Tank” star Mark Cuban, Fireside enables content creators to start interactive shows from their phone, record and transcribe the shows, and stream their shows automatically to other platforms. Creators can also earn money by selling tickets.

Toonz Media Group and GuardianLink are partnering for an Integrated NFT design lab specializing in Non Fungible Tokens for custom-made digital assets. The Toonz NFTLabs will provide integrated services for artists, creators, collectors, athletes and brands to create curated digital assets and NFTs representing them.

Video software provider Synamedia has launched Synamedia OTT ServiceGuard, giving media companies a tool to address the weaknesses that make it easy for pirates to not only steal content but also entire OTT services, including redistributing directly from the service provider’s content delivery network. “Many rights holders and operators mistakenly believe that current approaches – including DRM, client hardening and concurrency limits – provide adequate content protection. Without sugar coating the truth, they are mistaken,” said Nitsan Baider, Director of Product Management for Security Solutions at Synamedia. “Up to now, technologies have barely made a dent in OTT piracy because the protocol is broken. Synamedia OTT ServiceGuard is designed to safeguard against those risks.”

Entertainment content and technology company Trioscope, recognized for its proprietary animated drama engine, has raised $5.25M led by BITKRAFT Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on gaming, esports, and interactive media. Sony Innovation Fund, Transcend Fund, Cordillera Investment Partners and Thomas Vu/Axis Mundi Capital participated. Trioscope will use the investment to expand its US and worldwide business; focus on boosting its original IP and content; and productize its enhanced animation technology toolset for global third-party creators and studios to produce content through licensing agreements.

Advertisers recognize the addressable TV opportunity, with 32% saying they consider addressable TV to be a must-buy (+7% points YoY), according to a WarnerMedia study conducted in partnership with Advertiser Perceptions. Other takeaways include:
· Despite the growing adoption of addressable over the years, there is still no majority consensus on the definition for addressable TV, although advertisers tend to define addressable holistically.
· Advertisers perceive CTV and addressable TV similarly, suggesting the complementary nature of these media vs. one channel being an “either/or” media investment – both offer increased ad relevance, incremental reach, and reliable audience targeting. Those who say CTV is most important to achieving their goals agree that addressable TV’s ability to test and learn is its top benefit. Those who say linear is most important to achieving their goals agree that addressable TV’s ability to deliver more relevant ads is its top benefit.

CTV advertising marketplace Media Pulse Insights & Technology announced a partnership with CTV advertising and measurement platform Innovid to bring Innovid’s advanced CTV creative advertising capabilities to the Canadian market and Media Pulse advertising clients. “As the popularity of CTV advertising continues to grow, the creative quality of the ads has evolved as well, giving brands new opportunities to engage and interact with consumers,” said Christopher Law, CEO of Media Pulse.

Media planning and buying platform SRDS launched new tools designed to help agencies and brands activate against their commitments to diversify media spend and connect with diverse and inclusive audiences. Kantar announced the global launch of Digital Video AI, an AI-powered creative effectiveness tool that predicts the performance of digital video advertising. Unilever partnered with Kantar through the tool’s development and has tested hundreds of ads on the platform to improve their performance against their effectiveness and ROI goals. “At Unilever we consider ourselves to be pioneers in pre-testing in the creative development process” said Neha Sharma, Global Brand Engagement Lead, Unilever. “Digital Video AI enabled us make quick decisions, pick from our best creatives, test video edits and even measure competitor campaigns with speed and at scale.”

Performance advertisers can now take advantage of YouTube on CTV to drive and measure conversion through the expansion of Video action campaigns. Viewers of a Video action campaign on their television can type the URL on their screen into a browser to shop on the brand’s website, without interrupting the viewing session. The ability to connect the jump from CTV to desktop and mobile digital is aimed at helping advertisers drive more online sales and leads.

OpenVault, source of SaaS-based revenue and network improvement solutions and data-driven insights for the broadband industry, announced a strategic funding event with funding from three existing customers: Service Electric Cablevision, Service Electric Cable TV & Communications, and Blue Ridge Communications. The money is targeted to help accelerate OpenVault’s growth, most notably in Europe and Latin America.

Estrella Media’s ad-supported digital inventory is now available to buyers in the Xandr Marketplace. “Gaining access to inventory from Estrella Media is an exciting development as Xandr continues to focus on diversifying the audiences available to buyers in our marketplace,” said Mike Bagliebter, Director, Marketplace Development, Xandr. “Today, there are over 62 million Hispanics in the US, making up about 19% of the population, and we’re excited to power content for this significant audience segment.”

Taboola, which powers recommendations for the open web, inked a new, multiyear deal with NBC Sports for mid-article placements. The placements offer video advertisers a brand safe environment to reach relevant consumers, while also allowing NBCSports the ability to recommend and promote their own content and initiatives. The agreement builds on a seven-year partnership between Taboola and NBCSports.

Ad-serving, analytics and rights management company Extreme Reach has received accreditation for CTV video advertising impressions from the Media Rating Council, joining DoubleVerify, FreeWheel, Innovid, Moat, Pixelate, Protected Media and Hulu. MRC also received accreditation for mobile app, under the MRC category “rendered ad impressions — video.”

HBO Max will launch in 27 European countries over the coming year, beginning in the Nordics, Spain and Andorra on October 26. In early 2022 the rollout will continue with 14 additional Central American and Eastern European territories, as well as Portugal, with seven more countries after that.

Genius Brands International struck a deal with Pluto TV to stream a branded Kartoon Channel!. “We are thrilled to bring Kartoon Channel! to the Pluto TV audience. Scripps-owned Newsy has launched over the air, supplementing its OTT and CTV distribution. The national news network boasts 14 news bureaus across the country, providing 17 hours of daily news. “We have built a team of strong storytellers, anchors and reporters with a goal of making journalism as enjoyable, relevant and interesting as it is important,” said Kate O’Brian, head of the news group for Scripps Networks. “Our promise will be to provide the objective journalism that Americans are seeking.” The OTA launch brings Newsy to Scripps’ broadcast stations’ spectrum as well as that of partner broadcasters, making it the only American news television network to be on both OTA and OTT.

Redbox is partnering with FreeWheel, a Comcast Company that provides TV advertising solutions, to integrate programmatic technology across Redbox’s free streaming platforms. Advertisers will be able to access and buy Redbox inventory, both nationally and locally, and target specific audiences.

Streaming entertainment company Cinedigm announced the evolution of its streaming service Fandor will include a wider footprint, with hundreds of new acquisitions from an array of rights holders and film distributors. The updated platform features a new design and an intuitive user-experience, with a continuous refresh of independent titles each month.

Sports streamer FloSports announced the acquisition of HockeyTech, a live and on-demand hockey streaming platform and sports data provider to teams, leagues and national organizations. The acquisition of HockeyTech includes its entire media rights portfolio, live and on-demand streaming platform HockeyTV, and enterprise solutions.
