10/04/21: Major League Baseball is ready to roll out the postseason

MLB has its postseason contenders locked and loaded as the race for the NL West crown and AL Wild Card race weren’t settled under the last day of the season yesterday. The results? A classic Yankees/Red Sox brawl for the AL Wild Card Game at Fenway Park on Tuesday at 8p on ESPN. TBS counters on Wednesday with the NL Wild Card Game at 8p, slating the Cardinals/Dodgers.

The Division Series games then begin on Thursday, with the AL Wild Card Winner facing the Rays in addition to the White Sox/Astros. The NL starts Friday with the Wild Card Winner taking on the Giants as well as the Braves/Brewers.

PROGRAMMING

With inclement weather drowning out any opportunities to open a race window on Sunday, the NASCAR Cup Series Round of 12 playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway will now run today at 1p on NBCSN/NBC Sports App, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Denny Hamlin will start on the Busch Pole for Monday’s start. NBC Sports’ Rick Allen will call the race alongside Steve Letarte, Jeff Burton and Dale Earnhardt Jr..

CBS Sports announced the opening game of its college football doubleheader for Saturday, selecting Georgia/Auburn at 3:30p. Noah Eagle, analysts Aaron Murray and Rick Neuheisel, along with reporter Jenny Dell will call the action from Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions in the state of Hawaii, the Maui Jim Maui Invitational will shift over to Hawaii’s “Ninth Island” of Las Vegas. The 2021 event will be hosted at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino from Nov. 22-24 with all programs from the original field participating. “Maui is our Tournament home, which is why we are disappointed that the current state COVID-19 restrictions will not allow us to host the Maui Jim Maui Invitational there this year,” said Tom Valdiserri, Executive Vice President of KemperLesnik, the operator of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. “We determined that if we could not travel to Maui, the next best place to go was Las Vegas, Hawaii’s Ninth Island. While we anxiously await our return to the island in 2022, we know that we were able to relocate the event safely and successfully last year in Asheville while maintaining the spirit of Maui, and we expect the same result this year in Las Vegas.”

In talent news, Jackie Redmond joins WWE as the new co-host of Raw Talk and Talking Smack alongside WWE Analyst and co-host of The Bump Matt Camp. Redmond currently serves as a host and reporter covering hockey for both the NHL Network and Turner Sports. She previously spent six years as an anchor for Rogers Sportsnet in Canada, covering all sports as a reporter and hosting a variety of studio programs, including Sportsnet Central and WWE Aftermath.

Journalists Kayla Burton and Bridget Condon joined NFL Media. Burton and Condon will serve multi-platform roles for NFL Media across NFL Network, NFL.com and the NFL app, with a variety of duties including on-air news updates, field reporting and contributions on properties such as Fantasy Football.

Finally, Ken Singleton worked his final game for YES Network on Sunday afternoon, and will leave the Yankees’ broadcast booth. The former big league outfielder has taken part in Yankees broadcasts for more than two decades, beginning with the MSG Network in 1997.

On the RSN front, Comcast has dropped MSG Networks from its Xfinity channel lineup (primarily in New Jersey and Connecticut) with the two media companies in a dispute over rights fees after the previous broadcast deal between the two expired on Sept. 30. Meanwhile, DISH TV dropped all AT&T Sports Networks from its lineup on Thursday, including ROOT Sports.

The International 10 is reportedly reversing course and will now no longer welcome live audiences to this year’s event due to a surge in COVID cases. Refunding tickets, the playoff segment of the International 10 was set to begin on Oct. 12 with a live TI10 audience. “We have been carefully evaluating the continued rise of Covid rates in Romania, as well as the resulting introduction of new local restrictions in Bucharest. To ensure the safety of all players, talent, and production staff participating in the event, we have decided to refund all ticket sales for The International 2021.”

The Brazilian Free Fire League is now set to be streamed live on TikTok. The alliance is now underway with all matches able to be watched on Free Fire Brazil’s official TikTok account. The alliance also includes the grand final on Oct. 30.

U.S. Ski & Snowboard named Sophie Goldschmidt as the organization’s next President and CEO. Goldschmidt will officially begin on October 18th, taking over for current President and CEO Tiger Shaw. Goldschmidt most recently served as CEO of the World Surf League (WSL). Prior to that, she held executive positions at the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), the Rugby Football Union (RFU), Chime Sports Marketing (CSM), the PGA European Tour and Adidas.

National Women’s Soccer League Commissioner Lisa Baird resigned following allegations that a former league coach engaged in sexual harassment and misconduct. Baird’s resignation was announced by the league late Friday after complaints over how the league handled the allegations.
