Good morning. It’s Thursday October 4, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The NHL is closer to heading to the Pacific Northwest. The NHL Exec Committee voted unanimously 9-0 for an expansion NHL franchise in Seattle, according to published reports. The Board Of Governors will vote on the bid during its December meetings in Georgia and requires 75% approval to pass. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said, “There are a variety of factors that could impact that, including the construction timeline (of Key Arena). The sooner construction can begin, obviously, the more likely an early start.” Potential team owner David Bonderman, NHL Seattle President & CEO Tod Leiweke, OVG CEO Tim Leiweke, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and new minority investor Len Potter all spoke to the committee. Film producer Jerry Bruckheimer, another investor in the team, was also involved in the presentation.
 
 
ON THE AIR
 
ESPN’s coverage of the 2018 MLB National League Wild Card Game presented by Hankook Tire was up 59 percent from the National League Wild Card Game in 2017, according to Nielsen. ESPN and ESPN2 combined to deliver a 5.1 metered market rating compared to a 3.2 last year. The telecasts combined to peak with a 6.0 11:15-11:30 p.m. ET.
 
With live marquee events from morning to midnight and beyond, 64 million viewers tuned into NBC’s big event weekend last Saturday and Sunday, that featured the 2018 Ryder Cup, Stanford-Notre Dame in primetime, the premiere of Saturday Night Live, the NASCAR Playoffs from Charlotte, and Sunday Night Football featuring Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
 
Turner Sports released research supporting the benefit of out-of-home viewing on linear television for advertisers. By using Nielsen’s Out-of-Home measurement of television viewing and conducting guaranteed deals to clients using this data, Turner can validate the additional value advertisers receive from this viewing
 
Some of the findings:
Out-of-home NBA viewers delivered a 100% lift in purchase consideration of 9 sponsor brands over non-NBA viewers, compared to an 85% lift for in-home NBA viewers.
 
There was an increase of +125% in word-of-mouth volume about those same nine advertisers by out-of-home NBA viewers, compared to a 75% volume lift by in-home viewers over non-viewers.
 
In addition, NBA out-of-home viewers exhibited a 51% lift in ad recall over non-viewers, similar to the 49% lift achieved by in-home viewers.
 
According to Nielsen’s National Out-of-Home Reporting Service, during the 2018 NBA on TNT Western Conference Finals, out-of-home audiences delivered a +10.9% lift in adult 18-49 viewership (above and beyond in-home viewership), while adults 25-54 achieved a 10.1% lift. b
 
On Thursday, Oct. 18, NBC Olympics primetime host Mike Tirico will moderate a panel at the annual LA84 Foundation Summit in Los Angeles that will discuss the legacy of the 1968 Olympic Games and their impact today. Panelists will include Pro Football Hall of Famer and NBC Sports analyst Tony Dungy, Olympic bronze medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad and four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis. The theme of this year’s summit focuses on athlete activism and social justice, while also commemorating the 1968 Olympic Games. The panel will also screen a short portion of NBC Olympics’ documentary that premiered in February during NBC Olympics’ coverage of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, telling the story of the Vietnam War, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, protest movements in North America and Europe, and more. Amidst that backdrop, the Mexico City Games became a stage for the collision of sport and politics. 1968: The Legacy of the Mexico City Games will air on October 31 at 8 p.m. ET on NBCSN.
 
Entercom and the Redskins have agreed to a new broadcast partnership that will enhance coverage of the team on Entercom’s five DC radio stations, while bringing Spanish broadcasts of every Redskins game to the company’s El Zol Deportes station.
 
NBC Sports will present the first-ever live Gallagher Premiership Rugby match on U.S. broadcast television this Saturday, when defending champions Saracens face Harlequins at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC, immediately following NBC Sports’ Premier League coverage featuring Manchester United and Newcastle.

The multiyear partnership includes the “Ford F-150 Final Five,” a sponsorship of the final five minutes of every Bruins game. The new deal includes a combination of customized virtual signage, on-screen graphics, social media posts and live reads by the Bruins broadcast team. New England Ford Dealers also will continue sponsoring NESN’s second intermission report, which includes a game summary, billboards, live reads and commercial inventory
 
AVPFirst announced its 3rd Annual Wall of Champions Induction Ceremony and Serving Up Style Fashion Show fundraiser on Sunday, November 4th.
