While 55% of adults in the US get news from social media sites, 62% said social media companies have too much control over the news on their platforms, according to a Pew survey taken in July. Fifty-two percent reported getting news from Facebook, 28% from YouTube, 17% from Twitter and 14% from Instagram.
Netflix renewed Dear White People for a fourth and final season. Creator Justin Simien will be back in his role as co-showrunner, writer and executive producer with co-showrunner and executive producer Yvette Lee BowserSeason three launched in August.
Vice Media has agreed to acquire fellow digital-centric media company Refinery29 in a transaction expected to close by the end of the year. “This is an expansive moment for independent media,” said Nancy Dubuc, CEO of Vice Media Group. “We will not allow a rapidly consolidating media ecosystem to constrict young people’s choices or their ability to freely express themselves about the things they care about most. At Vice and Refinery29, the megaphone is theirs to use and the platforms are theirs to build with us.” Refinery29 is focused on a female audience, while Vice’s is 60% male.
Political affiliation is a predictor of TV preferences, according to a new study of nine shows from IMA Research. Thirty-one percent of Democrats like Game of Thrones, versus only 14% of Republicans. Stranger Things had a similar pattern, with 34% of Democrats and 16% of Republicans liking the show. For The Simpsons it was 37%/ 24%, and NBA basketball scored thumbs ups from 42% of Dems and 25 percent of Republicands. Both sides agreed on football, with 54% liking to watch games, and more Republicans (7%) than Democrats (6%) reported liking to watch The Bachelor franchise.
Twelve Democratic presidential candidates have been invited to take the stage for the CNN- and the New York Times’- hosted one-night-only debate on October 15. Deadline to qualify was Tuesday. Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Andrew Yang, Cory Booker, Beto O’Rourke, Tom Steyer, Amy Klobuchar, Tulsi Gabbard and Julian Castro made the cut. It will be Steyer’s first debate; the Sanders campaign canceled events “until further notice” after the Vermont senator was treated for an artery blockage.
Zuri Hall has joined All Access as a co-host, and as a correspondent on Access Hollywood, covering celebrity interviews, feature film junkets, set visits and red carpets events.

Young Dylan got a big surprise on The Ellen DeGeneres Show: Tyler Perry and Nickelodeon have entered into a partnership to jointly develop and produce a new kids and family live-action series starring the 10-year-old rapper. “It’s a thrill to bring this new series to Nickelodeon from the incredibly talented and prolific Tyler Perry, whose track record speaks for itself,” said Nick President Brian Robbins. “Dylan is an incredibly talented 10-year-old who at heart is a relatable kid making his dreams happen.” The deal is part of Perry’s long-term pact with Viacom.
Lifetime renewed Marrying Millions for an expanded 16-episode second season. The reality show’s season one finale drew 433,000 viewers among W25-54 in Live+3 Nielsens; season one had ten episodes.
Game Show Network greenlit Get a Clue, hosted by Rob Belushi (How I Met Your Mother). Half-hour word-guessing game show is set to premiere in early 2020 and will air weekdays.
Food Network has picked up primetime competition series Girl Scout Cookie Championship for a four-episode season. Hosted by Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother), the series challenges professional bakers to transform Girl Scout Cookies into dessert creations. Production is currently underway and the series is slated to premiere 1Q20 during Girl Scout Cookie season.

Topgolf Studios is teaming with Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith’s Wesbook Inc.  content Studio Westbrook Media to create original entertainment. The companies plan to shop This Joka and additional original longer-form series to premium streaming platforms and networks; other content under the pact will live on Topgolf’s YouTube channel and social media accounts.
Lisa Cholodenko (Olive Kitteridge) will direct Showtime pilot Rita. The dramedy based on a Danish series stars and is exec produced by Lena Headey (Game of Thrones).
Sketch comedy series The Iliza Schlesinger Show landed a six-episode order from Netflix, produced by Avalon Television. Shlesinger will debut her fifth stand-up special for the streamer this year.
Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat), Michael Golamco and Hieu Ho have partnered to launch production company Imminent Collision, focused on developing stories from Asian American perspectives, reports Deadline. The company has a first-look TV deal with 20th Century Fox Television.
Plastics scored a put pilot commitment from ABC. Plastic surgery drama comes from Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain (The Fix), McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision and 20th Century Fox Television.
HGTV reboot of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has a knock-out special guest scheduled: Laila Ali, boxer/lifestyle expert/author. Ali will appear in an episode alongside the regularly appearing designers to execute home renovations for local heroes. Series is set to launch in early 2020.
Destination Fear debuts on Travel Channel on Saturday, October 26 at 10p. In the 10-parter, Dakota Laden (Ghost Adventures) takes his sister Chelsea Laden and best friend Tanner Wiseman on a cross-country RV trip to spend the night in haunted locations.
Hulu Original series Bravest Knight returns with eight new episodes on Friday, October 11. First five episodes of the series landed in June. 
Paramount Network is taking a page from a Viacom sib with the launch of its first original digital series, On Location. “Comedy Central has experienced massive success with amazing digital originals and we’re thrilled to take those learnings and apply them to the Paramount Network filters,” said Jennifer Danielson, SVP of Digital Studios for Comedy Central, Paramount Network and TV Land. Episodes feature MTV correspondent Josh Horowitz interviewing filmmakers and actors at a memorable location from their movies.
AXS TV will serve as the stateside home of UK singing competition The X Factor: Celebrity for the sixth consecutive year, as the series takes a star turn starting Monday, October14 at 8p.
Season two of TV One’s Uncensored starts with an episode profiling singer/actress Tisha Campbell (Martin) on Sunday, October 6 at 9p.
America’s Most Musical Family launches Friday, November 1 at 7p. The premiere of the Nickelodeon music competition will be simulcast across Viacom’s BET, MTV, MTV2, Nicktoons, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1.
Among the shows coming to Tubi this month are The Bachelorette season 13; 2017 film Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; 2016 film Norm of the North and 2013’s Escape Plan.
Cinelatino will air the exclusive US premiere of hit Mexican film Treintona, Soltera y Fantastica on Sunday, October 6 at  9p and 11p. The premiere kicks off the net’s “Domingo Estelar” (“Stellar Sunday”) lineup for October.
Acorn TV is streaming the third and final season of Australia’s popular series, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (no longer on Netflix). All eight episodes will stream starting Monday, October 7.
More streaming services mean more subscriptions, according to a new survey from Parks Associates. “The number of OTT services available in the US increased by 140% in five years, giving consumers an unprecedented number of options to meet their video needs,” said senior analyst Steve Nason. Most OTT households are anchored by Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video, “but consumers are finding they can’t fulfill all their interests through a single service,” adds Nason. “Many small and medium-sized services are building their brand and subscriber base by filling in these gaps in content.” The percentage of households with multiple OTT subs has increased by 130% since 2014, said Parks, and 46% of U.S. broadband households subscribe to two or more services. 
In its bid to entice its user base to add on premium subscriptions, Roku is offering free episodes of original series from subscription services from Showtime, History Vault, Acorn TV and more. Roku has also made it easier to sign up for premium subs by enabling one-click sign-up.
Yext, the platform for Brand Verified Answers in search, announced a new global integration with Trustpilot, the independent platform for companies to build trust with consumers, that enables Yext customers with Trustpilot accounts to manage location-based reviews directly in the Yext platform. Businesses can log in to the Yext platform to monitor and respond to their Trustpilot reviews in real time, in the same place they manage reviews from other channels. “The customer journey starts with a question, and online reviews are one of the first places people turn for answers when deciding whether or not to transact,” said Marc Ferrentino, Chief Strategy Officer of Yext. “Yext’s integration with Trustpilot makes it possible for businesses to monitor and engage with reviews at the location level directly in our platform.”
Applicaster was selected by India’s online OTT platform ZEE5 to develop and bring the new ZEE5 app to market. Applicaster says it will leverage its Zapp SaaS platform, relationship with Accenture, and integrations with Google, Microsoft, Kaltura to efficiently launch the app in-market.
Connected Television now accounts for half of all video ad impressions, according to Extreme Reach’s Q2 2019 Video Benchmarks Report, based on video ads served from AdBridge. “While much of CTV’s growth has been attributed to cordcutters, the truth is that CTV is rapidly becoming just another way to watch content for everyone,” says the report. Of note: while the number of impressions served by CTV reached the 50% milestone, the number actually decreased in the auto vertical by nearly 30% while mobile impressions doubled.
Geopath, the not-for-profit organization that provides the currency for out-of-home advertising, announced that its Insights platform has been approved and launched as the industry currency for OOH measurement. “This is a defining moment for the out-of-home industry at a time when it is one of the fastest growing segments of advertising,” says Kym Frank, President of Geopath. “I applaud the OOH industry for listening to the needs of the advertisers and making an investment in the state-of-the-art, accountable metrics needed to power a smarter marketplace.” Geopath Insights was launched in beta in 2018 and developed in conjunction with the OOH industry around an “audience-first” approach. The methodology provides more than 8,000 unique audience profiles, with additional segments being added on a regular basis.
The first paid TV ad for 2020 presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders starts running today, part of a $1.3 million TV buy in Iowa, home of the first-in-the-nation caucus.
Although marketing budgets dropped from 11.2% of overall company revenue in 2018 to 10.5% this year, 61% of CMOs believe their budgets will bounce back in 2020, according to the Gartner’s CMO Spend Survey. “However, that same percentage of marketing executives believed their budgets would increase in 2019, indicating their optimism is misplaced,” said Ewan McIntyre, VP analyst for Gartner’s. “While we’re not yet witnessing a precipitous drop in budgets, this year’s downtick presents a counterintuitive scenario. You could call this confidence in the face of adversity. Or you could call it hubris.”
Wurl, a provider of streaming video distribution and advertising services for connected TV, announced the general availability of a new advertising marketplace enabling video producers to sell their CTV ad inventory to advertisers ranging from global brands to local businesses. AdPool is a free service for video publishers and CTV platforms that are part of the Wurl Network; premium CTV video publishers can use AdPool to complement their existing advertising sales and reduce unsold inventory or as their primary ad sales channel.

Animated kids’ show Gandhi, inspired by the life of Mahatma Gandhi, makes its international debut at MIPCOM from India and Singapore-based animation studio Cosmos-Maya. The show has been commissioned by the Walt Disney Company India.
Independent international distribution company Lineup Industries social issue format Taboo has been commissioned by public broadcaster TV3 in Spain. 
Among the titles Canada’s Sinking Ship Entertainment is bringing to MIPCOM is its latest title, Endlings. Sci-fi action series for families explores themes of extinction, biodiversity, isolation, abandonment and rebirth.
Blue Ant International’s Cannes slate includes over 330 hours of new programming including documentaries Witches of Salem and Cheating Hitler: Surviving the Last Holocaust, factual programming including Big Cat Country  and adult animation series Bigfoot. The distributor has also taken over all distribution activities for Handel’s library.
National Geographic announced a second season of its Overheard at National Geographic. Starting October 15, the podcast will continue to give listeners the opportunity to eavesdrop on conversations with explorers, photographers and scientists as they share their experiences.
New shows joining Forever Dog’s roster of podcasts include two scripted offerings: Conference Call, from Charles Rogers and Sarah-Violet Bliss (Search Party), along with Jordan Firstman, Abby Elliot and others;  and F**k Hut Music School for Teens, from Mitra Jouhari (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee).

Broadcast premiere week continued its pattern of decline in Nielsen Live+SD data, with total average viewers down 9%, to 6.2 million and A18-49 down 12%, to a 1.35 rating. The exception was Fox, which was boosted by Thursday Night Football to 5.74 million viewers (up 8%) and a 1.7 rating (up 6%).
The live airing of the 2019 Global Citizens Festival, simulcast on MSNBC, MSNBC.com and NBC News NOW, was the highest rated Global Citizen Festival broadcast ever on MSNBC among total viewers, up 29% versus 2018. More than 6 million viewed a portion of the Festival on MSNBC, and those who did watched for an average of 42 minutes, a record.
