09/26/16: Facebook admits to inflating video view metrics; Twitter explores takeover talks; Snapchat announces video-enabled sunglasses

Good morning. It’s Monday September 26, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Pay-Per-Click (PPC): In digital advertising, pay-per click (PPC) is a business model in which an advertiser pays agencies and/or publishers based on how many users clicked on their ad or ads.

TOP NEWS

Well that’s not good. In a letter to the ad-buying agency Publicis Media, which was obtained by the Wall Street Journal, Facebook admitted to misstating its assessment of how long, on average, viewers watch videos on Facebook. Facebook said that, when measuring average view time, it had only been taking video views of longer than three seconds into account. Facebook now acknowledges that this was a mistake, and the company says that it has begun taking all video views into account when calculating average view time. According to Facebook’s letter to Publicis, the social media giant’s earlier method of measuring video views likely inflated its assessment of average view time by 60 to 80 percent. (Yikes.) As the Journal points out, it’s entirely possible that Facebook’s overly rosy metrics have misled advertisers and agencies as to just how many viewers have been seeing their ads. And that’s exactly the kind of flawed information that can sway buyers into buying on Facebook instead of, say, YouTube or other publishers. Facebook insists that average view time is merely one of many video viewing metrics it uses, and that the "error…did not impact billing." It remains to be seen whether buyers will adjust their spends in response to the news.

Late last month, Twitter‘s stocks rallied when co-founder and board member Evan "Ev" Williams wouldn’t deny that the company might, at some point, consider takeover offers. "We have to consider the right options," he told a Bloomberg reporter. Well, the company seems to be moving closer to that takeover. CNBC‘s David Faber reported that Twitter is in talks to be acquired. The suitors include Google and Salesforce, according to the report. Faber noted that, while no sale is imminent, talks are "picking up momentum." Twitter’s shares rose by as much as 20% following the report.

PLATFORMS + DEVICES

Oh snap. For the first time, Snapchat is taking on the world of hardware. The company – which has now assumed the corporate name Snap Inc. – says it will launch a brand of video-enabled sunglasses later this fall. The glasses, which will sell at $129, will enable users to record and upload 10-second video. They’ll connect directly to the Snapchat app. Simply called Spectacles, the new hardware will sell in limited quantities, at least to start. Hop on down to the Digital Spotlight section to see the product’s first ad.

The on-demand music space is suddenly getting very crowded. Soon after Pandora announced its upcoming on-demand streaming service, iHeartRadio is following suit. The digital radio service announced that it will launch its own Spotify competitor, called iHeartRadio All Access, in January.

RESEARCH

According to a study from IPG Media Lab, Forbes and Syracuse University‘s Newhouse School, branded content leads to 59% higher recall than other digital advertising, including native and display ads. The study also found that consumers are 14% more likely to search for more content from a company after an impression of branded content. Finally, the study found that branded content is only improving; in fact, there’s been a 17% improvement in brand recall as compared to a 2013 study. You can take a look at the full study here. (For info on how to produce the branded content advertisers are looking for, register for the October 20 Cynopsis webinar.)
