09/22/16: YT looking for heroes; DirecTV Now packs incentive for AT&T customers; ‘Fuller House’ reopens on Netflix in December

Good morning. It’s Thursday September 22, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TOP NEWS

YouTube
has started enlisting users to moderate its content by flagging inappropriate comments, fielding questions in YouTube Help forums and writing accurate subtitles. For their efforts, volunteers can earn points in the site’s new crowdsourcing program, called “YouTube Heroes,” and gain access to perks like workshops and product launch previews. The initiative was announced on YouTube Help.

In more YouTube news, the website will live-stream the Presidential debates from PBS, Telemundo and The Washington Post. YouTube will present the debates in conjunction with its #voteIRL get out the vote campaign aimed at young Americans, for which it’s teamed with Ryan Seacrest and YT personalities including Timothy DeLaGhetto. The #voteIRL a campaign will include an anthem video featuring talent including Bethany Mota and Hank Green. The first debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is set for Monday, September 26. Facebook has an exclusive deal to live-stream ABC News’ debate coverage; Twitter has a similar deal with Bloomberg Media.

Instagram is at last making its “Drafts” feature, previously in test mode, available to all users. The new feature lets users save their work before posting, allowing time for edits later. A new “manage” button offers users the option of removing drafts they no longer want.

DirecTV Now
will launch with “a very, very aggressive price,” and an incentive to convert wireless consumers into AT&T customers. This according to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, who yesterday outlined plans for the company’s live video streaming service that’s positioned to compete directly with cable. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs investor conference, Stephenson said the service, set to launch by year’s end, will offer more than 100 channels and “the data required to stream it on your mobile device is incorporated into the price of the content” for subscribers who use AT&T’s wireless service. AT&T is aiming to sell DirecTV Now to 20 million households that don’t currently subscribe to pay TV, Stephenson said.

Disney’s recent investment in Major League Baseball’s BAMTech streaming technology provides “a great way” to move ESPN and other Disney assets to digital platforms for additional exposure, Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors. ESPN is developing a service that will offer “complementary” programming for fans of sports to which the channel has licensed video rights, but doesn’t have airtime to show. The new service will not be a one-size-fits-all, Iger said. “Where the market could be going is buying very selectively a specific sport and maybe a specific date.”

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes told the Goldman Sachs crowd his company’s recent purchase of a 10 percent stake in Hulu “fits into a bunch of things that we’ve done.” Hulu is planning to launch a streaming service next year that will compete with cable and satellite, two core TW businesses, but Bewkes said he doesn’t think the new service will pose a big threat. “The existing distribution world is getting its act together… developing different packages with better consumer support,” he said. Bewkes also said he isn’t worried about the onslaught of skinny bundles. “We’re trying to add distribution choices for consumers… They want, in most cases, all of our networks.”

Vine maven King Bach is on board to host the 6th Annual Streamy Awards, on Thursday, October 4 at 9p. Presenters for the show, from dick clark productions and Tubefilter, include Gabriel Conte, Philip DeFranco, Brittany Furla, Joey Graceffa, Grace Helbig, Jenna Marbles, Tyler Oakley and Rhett & Link. King Bach, nee Andrew Bachelor, is a Guinness Book World Record-holder for the most followed account on Vine with more than 15 million subscribers.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

The Tyler Oakley Show launched this week on The Ellen Digital Network. It’s the first project for Oakley and Ellen DeGeneres’ digital network under their overall development deal. First guests on Oakley’s show: Kerry Washington, Celine Dion and, no surprise, DeGeneres. Additional upcoming guests include Kristen Bell, Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine and Seth Rogen.

The Presidential hopefuls aren’t the only ones hitting the debate stage. Launching today (September 22) on Seeso is Debate Wars, an original series moderated by Michael Ian Black where two teams of comedians and improvisers enter the "Debatium" to settle age-old arguments. Topics include cats vs. dogs, pie vs. cake, babies vs. old people, and debates are in front of a live audience. Debaters include Janeane Garofalo, Judah Friedlander, Gilbert Gottfried, Eugene Mirman, Aparna Nancherla, Todd Barry, Connor Ratliff and Dave Hill. Running analysis will be provided by commentators Brandon Scott Jones and Morgan Grace Jarrett.

Netflix set December 9 as the global launch date for Season 2 of its original series Fuller House. The streaming service renewed the sitcom spinoff after it initially launched in March.
