Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 18, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Maker Studios
and America’s Funniest Home Videos have partnered on a new YouTube initiative to create original short-form programming for YT celebs. ShayFV, a weekly 17-epsiode five minute clip show starring Shay “Shay Carl” Butler will be the first series to debut, on Oct. 19. Other digital stars like Jason Horton, Ceciley Jenkins and Ed Bassmaster will also join AFV by making appearances and hosting AFV Do Overs, a new segment that puts a spin on best-known videos; it will premiere one week prior on the AFV YT channel. Additionally, Maker struck a deal with to roll out a YouTube channel featuring rarely seen performances from well-known comedians, including Louis CK, Jon Stewart, Dave Chappelle and others.

The studio behind Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart’s #HeyUSA show, Astronauts Wanted, announced a new YouTube series called The Feels. YT celebs Andrea Russett, Hannah Witton, Simone Shepard, Laci Green and SmoothieFreak will take questions on dating and love from fans every week in each episode. The 12 episodes of the first season will debut on Astronauts Wanted’s YT channel and website on Sept. 24.

Vimeo landed 80 episodes of the comedy series Mystery Science Theatre 3000 through a deal with Shout! Factory, and will present episodes over the next year. Selections from the entire catalog of 180 episodes are currently offered on Netflix and Hulu, but this is the largest collection ever made available at one time. It’s $300 for the entire set, and $9.99 for individual titles.

Film and TV distributor The Orchard acquired theatrical and digital North American rights to the Tribeca Film Festival premiered film Preservation. The thriller stars Pablo Schreiber (Orange is the New Black), Aaron Staton (Mad Men) and Wrenn Schmidt (Boardwalk Empire).

A new syndication courtroom show, Judge Faith, will examine small claim cases revolving around Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. Faith Jenkins is a former Miss Louisiana and the First Runner Up for Miss America in 2001 and has provided legal analysis on MSNBC and Fox News. The show premieres on Sept. 22 in 91 percent of top markets. Producers are Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company and Trifecta Entertainment.

CBS announced Wednesday it’s changing its rating reporting system for the upcoming fall season. Along with fast affiliate numbers, the net will report Live+7 Day projections. “C7 deals were a significant part of our Upfront negotiations this year, and we are doing more C7 deals all the time,” said CBS Corp. president and CEO Les Moonves. “As technologies continue to improve audience measurement across all platforms, these more precise metrics are becoming the industry standard.”

The Audience Access Affair (AX3) held its first-ever event in New York City yesterday, with the theme of “Live Entertainment Upfronts” featuring VEVO, Live Nation, Comedy Gives Back, The Tony Awards, American Express and more. At the panel “Superstars & Super Brands: The Perfect Match,” representatives from MAC Presents, Red Light Management, Ketchum Sports and Entertainment and Nielsen discussed how music and brands can successfully partner. Regarding measures of success, Ketchum EVP of Entertainment Marcus Peterzell said: “We always propose that a brand and the artist agree first on what a successful campaign means before they sign the check – will it be impressions, brand lift or something else?” Nielsen VP of Branded Entertainment, Music Tatiana Oliveira Simonian said the key to matching a brand with an artist is to make it look organic. She referenced the new Lincoln auto spots with Matthew McConaughey as a perfect example of “talking to the artist to find out what they drink, drive and wear and then connecting them to a brand.”

Yesterday, a group of media companies including Sony, Discovery Communications, Viacom, Dreamworks and NBCUniversal climbed into the ring at the invitation of Omnicom Group to vie for ad dollars from Omnicom clients such as Hasbro, Pepsi, State Farm, and Walgreens. The catch? The media companies had to pitch exclusive ideas that give the sponsors the ability to place their wares in major digital venues like AwesomenessTV, Machinima and Maker Studios, according to Variety. “A lot of these ‘convergence’ acquisitions that have been happening over the past few months are changing the marketplace,” OMD’s Content Collective Chief Content Officer Claudia Cahill said. To accomplish this, Content Collective instigated this new media-buying event, called a Final Front. Last year, deals were locked down with Pepsi and beauty marketer Coty.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

The old cliche of a husband and his wife waiting for a baby gets turned on its ear, courtesy of Kristen Bell and her hubby, Dax Shepard, who decide to forego a healthy hike outdoors when it seems like there’s a whisper of bad weather – as forecast on their Samsung Galaxy Tab S. Instead, they spend the day inside focusing on "mental fitness.” This includes Kristen flossing and singing to the Spinners’ “Could it be I’m falling in love” while Dax roams the streets looking for food to appease his wife’s pregnancy cravings: kale salad, pierogis and frozen yogurt. Then Kristen cries at adorable puppies and models dresses for her husband while he tells her she looks gorgeous without looking at her cause he’s watching The Princess Bride on – you guessed it – his Samsung Galaxy Tab S! They end up snuggling and missing their big black tie event cause they’re having such a good time watching the movie. It really is very cute, we had to admit.
