CYNOPSISDIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Tuesday September 13, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
In-Season Stacking Rights: A TV network is said to have in-season tacking rights when it obtains the right to stream all episodes of a series’ current season on its digital platforms. It’s common for TV nets to make only a “rolling five” available – i.e., the five most recent episodes. But in an effort to compete with the likes of Netflix, many networks have begun pushing harder for in-season stacking rights. Earlier this year, NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt went so far as to say that stacking “is the future of our business.”
People/Entertainment Weekly Network, the new online entertainment and lifestyle network from Time Inc., debuts today. (It’s called PEN for short.) Time Inc. initially announced the network at its NewFront presentation in May. Over 300 hours of content are planned for the OTT network’s first year; it’ll also feature library content from the Time Inc. archives. Initial programming includes festival and awards show coverage, talk shows, and celebrity interviews. The network’s content and operations will mostly be powered by existing Entertainment Weekly and People staff. For instance, existing Time Inc. staffers will head up marketing and ad sales, and JJ Miller, EP of video for EW and People, will head up the production team. For a look at PEN’s first sizzle real, hop on down to the Digital Spotlight section.
Looks like Twitter isn’t a Monterey Jack fan. The company has a forged a live-streaming partnership with Cheddar, the millennial-oriented digital financial news network founded by former BuzzFeed-er Jon Steinberg. Twitter will live-stream two live shows – Opening Bell and Closing Bell, both of them dispatches from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange – every weekday. While Cheddar.com sits behind a paywall, Twitter will live-stream the two series for free. The new partnership only marks the latest addition to Twitter’s increasingly long list of live-streaming content partners, which include the four major sports leagues and Bloomberg Media. As the Wall Street Journal points out, Twitter’s live video play represents a major bid to pull in more ad dollars. One potential hiccup: Even cord-cutters like to watch sports and other live content on a TV. And crucially, the company is in talks to bring its app to Apple TV, according to the Journal and other publications.
Eight major trade groups serving the advertising, video tech, and marketing industries have announced plans to work together to create guidelines to simplify the distribution of digital video ads. The eight groups are:
– The Association of National Advertisers (ANA)
– The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) Technology Laboratory
– The American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s)
– AICE: (The North American post production industry trade association)
– The Digital Production Partnership Ltd (DPP)
– The North American Broadcasters Association (NABA)
– The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM)
– The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE)
The eight trade associations will make recommendations aimed at advertisers, agencies, and production companies. Their recommendations will apply to digital video produced for computers, smartphones, tablets, and traditional TV sets. The groups will form three joint subgroups, each focusing on a different area. The three areas are: file delivery specifications, advertising metadata, and audio specifications and best practices. According to the announcement, the groups hope to release a first draft of some new recommendations by the end of 2016.
HIRO Media, a Tel Aviv-based online programmatic video platform, announced the launch of its new Programmatic Video Content Marketing solution for branded video. HIRO Media says that the solution uses a proprietary syndication technology and prediction methodology to match video content to consumers and predict supply side inventory quality.

Lionsgate is on to its next adventure in SVOD. The company has teamed with Univision to create a new (as yet untitled) subscription service for Hispanic movie-going audiences. Slated to launch early next year, it’ll feature new and licensed Spanish-language films from the U.S. and around the world – many of them available the same day as their theatrical release in Latin America. According to the companies’ announcement, Univision will also offer the service to pay-TV operators, both individually and in tandem with the Univision Now SVOD service. Lionsgate has become a go-to partner for those looking to launch niche streaming services. Comic-Con International, Tribeca Enterprises, and comedian Kevin Hart have also partnered with the company on OTT offerings.

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
All Series (9/5/16 – 9/11/16)
Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
Jaunt means business. The virtual reality startup has named George Kliavkoff as its new CEO. Kliavkoff previously served as President of Hearst Ventures and Co-President of Hearst Entertainment. Before that, he was Chief Digital Officer at NBCU, where he was instrumental in the creation of Hulu. Jaunt launched its well-received VR camera system a bit over a year ago. But as the hardware space has grown increasingly competitive, the company has delved deeper into the production and distribution of original content. Kliavkoff’s hire would seem to strongly indicate that the trend will continue. To date, the company has raised over $100 million in funding.
A+E Networks’ Amanda Hill has been elevated to Chief Marketing Officer, reporting directly to CEO Nancy Dubuc. It was Dubuc who announced the promotion. Hill previously served as Chief Creative Officer for A+E Networks’ International division. In her new role, she’ll oversee global marketing – including brand strategy, consumer and B2B marketing – across all platforms, including from OTT and digital to linear TV.
The video personalization platform IRIS.TV has made some new hires. Max Dismore, previously of L’Oréal (New York), and Katherine Miller, previously of Samek Art Museum, have joined the company as Account Executives. And Kyle Raudensky, a recent Bucknell University grad, has joined the company as a Software Engineer, working on plugins for video players and platforms.
