IN THE NEWS

While consumers are still gobbling significant hours of entertainment, 37 percent of global viewers have stopped watching a show they’d enjoyed because it’s simply too complicated and/or expensive to access, according to a new audience insights study from TiVo. Most likely victims of “show dumping” require a premium pay-TV package, are available only through paid OTT and/or are unavailable on OTT services that aggregate content. Close to half of consumers surveyed said that for the amount they pay for video service, it should be easier to find what they want to watch.

In an Emmys first, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who submitted their names jointly for consideration, won the Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Award for co-hosting Saturday Night Live. On night one of the two-part Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday, a surprise victory went to Peter Scolari (Girls) for Best Comedy Series Guest Actor. Scolari had replaced Peter MacNicol (Veep) in the category after nominations were announced, when MacNicol was disqualified for appearing in more than 50 percent of his show’s episodes. More awards will be handed out during the Primetime Emmys telecast Sunday, September 18 on ABC. For a complete list of Creative Arts winners, go here.

Saturday Night Live writer Mikey Day follows the path of Tina Fey and others by transitioning to an on-camera role on the sketch comedy next season. Day got a test run of sorts this summer as a recurring player on NBC’s Maya & Marty, also from Lorne Michaels. There’s still room on the SNL roster, given the exits of Taran Killam, Jay Paharoah and Jon Rudnitsky.

Fox placed an order for seasons 17 and 18 of cooking competition Hell’s Kitchen. Grab your torque blanche – auditions start today in LA.

Geraldo Rivera wrote a message last week apologizing for defending Roger Ailes after the then-Fox News chairman was sued by former correspondent Gretchen Carson for sexual harassment. “It became apparent that Gretchen was not alone in alleging abhorrent behavior,” said Rivera in a Facebook post. “Now I am filled with regret for stubbornly discounting their various allegations.” Carlson settled for $20 million, and the company issued a public apology to her. As for Rivera, the journalist said that after an early manuscript of his memoir had been “enthusiastically received,” HarperCollins chose not to publish it “as a direct result” of his support for Ailes.

Greta Van Susteren, who recently exercised a clause in her contract allowing her to leave the net if Ailes did, joined Rivera in expressing regret for not believing sexual harassment claims leveled against her former Fox News boss. “We all regret it,” said Van Susteren, explaining that while the accusations were “inconsistent with what was my experience,” the situation was “hidden from all of us.”

The winner of a real-life dance contest will appear on NBC December 7 event Hairspray Live!. Contestants will perform September 15 at the Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore, where Hairspray is set, in front of judges including Maddie Baillio, who plays Tracy Turnblad.

LEGAL ISSUES

Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is being accused of using a script he co-wrote with Bryan Barber (Idlewild) for VH1 years ago as the basis for his ABC hit. “Plaintiff is informed and believes that at some point between the end of 2006 and September 2014, Defendant Barris  using Plaintiff’s idea for the Original Untitled Script  wrote, developed and shopped the pilot episode for Black-ish without Plaintiff’s knowledge or authorization,” says a complaint filed in LA on Friday. Barber is seeking over $1 million.

Discovery Communications filed a writ of possession against LMNO Productions for the completed episodes of season 2 of 7 Little Johnstons, which the company said it has paid for in full. LMNO countered in a statement that Discovery failed to sign the negotiated contract for the season or pay the agreed-upon price. The legal trouble started in June when an internal audit allegedly revealed discrepancies in LMNO’s accounting, causing Discovery to cancel its agreement. Now, “Discovery should not have to pay a ransom for material it already owns,” said Discovery in its Thursday filing.

COMING UP

Revolt TV VP of Insights and Strategy Jake Katz will be sharing research on the cultural behaviors that influence media users age 13-17 in “Project Z: A Mixed Media Story.” Some findings: YouTube is still king for online video, but Facebook as video utility is growing rapidly, and YouTube is complementing TV use, not cannibalizing it. “The cultural context of a 17year-old today defies much of what we’ve learned as an industry and put in to practice around Millennials,” Katz tells Cynopsis. “Project Z unpacks implications behind the cultural forces shaping Gen Z, who is a product of diversity, the recession, and coming of age in a post-modern media landscape.” CTAM event streams Wednesday, September 14 at 4p.

There’s always lots of buzz about broadcast shows this month, but there are gems on public television, too. Check out some passion projects in the latest Cynsiders.
