Above the Fold Ads: In online advertising, above the fold ads are ads that are visible to webpage visitors without any scrolling. Typically, publishers will charge higher rates for above the fold inventory. “Above the fold” was originally a newspaper term.
 
 

TOP NEWS
 

This week, AT&T’s DirecTV launched a new update to its app for iOS and Android, allowing subscribers to stream most DVR recordings and live channels from anywhere in the U.S. And now, AT&T has launched what it’s calling Data Free TV – a new program that allows DirecTV subs with AT&T plans to stream an unlimited amount of video without eating into their data usage. The feature is available through the DirecTV app and the U-Verse app. Immediately, some have accused AT&T of violating the FCC’s net neutrality policy, which holds that all Internet service providers have to treat all data traveling through their networks the same. AT&T, not surprisingly, begs to differ: “We are not treating our services differently from any other data,” said an AT&T rep said in a statement. “This feature is simply our way of saying thanks to customers that purchase both video and mobility services from AT&T.” It might be noted that AT&T is none too fond of the FCC’s net neutrality rules; indeed, the company is actively challenging them in court.
 
NBC has locked down “stacking rights” to 90% of its fall TV lineup, including shows like Saturday Night Live, The Voice, and Superstore. Those shows will offer up their five most recent episodes for free on NBC’s website and mobile apps. (Full seasons will be available to pay-TV subs.) In addition, NBC has launched an update to its iOS app: The app now includes Google Chromecast support.
 
Oh, glorious day: Football season is upon us. And so is the NFL’s new Discover channel, which launched on Snapchat yesterday. This marks the first time that a pro sports league has launched its own channel on the Discover platform. The league also announced that it will launch a new NFL Live Story for every game during the 2016 season, including the Super Bowl. The league will also launch Live Stories for major events such as the NFL Draft and the NFL Scouting Combine. Finally, Snapchat and the NFL have launched new custom geofilters for all 32 NFL teams.

MARKETING

The marketing agency United Entertainment Group (UEG) has partnered with the influencer advertising company CitizenNet. (UEG and CitizenNet made the announcement at Variety’s Entertainment and Technology Summit.) The companies have launched two new tools – the UEG f(IQ) Score and the Social Media Planner – designed to evaluate the social clout of influencers and match them with brands to be used in marketing campaigns. The UEG f(IQ) Score provides a statistical analysis of any overlap between an influencer and a brand’s digital audience, as well as other insights that gauge factors such as brand partiality and cost effectiveness. Meanwhile, the Social Media Planner is designed to map out where audiences can engage with an influencer campaign to maximize effectiveness and exposure.

OTT + SVOD

 
The anime-oriented SVOD service Crunchyroll has partnered with Funimation, another anime distribution company. Under the two companies’ new cross-licensing agreement, both will bring dozens of new titles to their services. The companies will share titles across streaming platforms, electronic sell-through transactions, and home video. Crunchyroll is majority-owned by Otter Media, a joint venture of AT&T and the Chernin Group. Along with its ‘FunimationNow’ streaming service, Funimation also operates anime studios and other distribution and tech partnerships.
 
 

PLATFORMS + DEVICES
 

Gracenote, a Tribune Media Company subsidiary that specializes in providing entertainment data, is unveiling new music offerings for pay-TV providers. According to the company, pay-TV providers will now be able to use Gracenote Music data and tech to create new video channels and services, help viewers identify artists they seen on TV, and enable search for related artists on both on-demand programming and linear TV. The offering makes use of Gracenote’s recommendation algorithms and its descriptive music database. The company plans to show its new music products at the IBC Conference in Amsterdam.
 
The video technology provider Kaltura announced that it’s launching a new “VR Alliance,” teaming with the VR content and distribution company Inception, as well as three other partners: 24i, Encompass, and Harmonic. Kaltura will showcase the new partnerships at the IBC Conference in Amsterdam. Kaltura says that, with the partnerships, it aims to promote “an open ecosystem of technology providers, and app developers…[and] continue to onboard relevant OTT players, customers and partners to this new program.” The IBC demonstration will include 360-degree VR content, as well as a new virtual store powered by Inception. Inception’s tech is currently in beta, but is slated to launch widely in Q4.

 

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
 

Oculus: Emmy winner. Oculus Studio, the production wing of the Facebook-owned VR company, just nabbed the Emmy for Outstanding Original Interactive Program. The company won for ‘Henry,’ an Elijah Wood-narrated animated short about a hedgehog who likes to give hugs. “We hope this represents a tipping point for the VR industry,” Henry-director Ramiro Lopez Dau told Variety. “We’ve wanted to show that VR is an art form – a place that welcomes storytellers and that even at this very, very early stage it can be a powerful tool for storytelling. This Emmy validates that vision.”
 
 

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

Kin Community, the multi-channel network focused on female content creators, has appointed Shauna Miller as Director of Original Programming, a newly crated position. Miller will oversee the production and distribution of content on Kin’s channels. She’ll also be tasked with developing new partnerships, and with formulating the network’s content strategy for emerging platforms. Before joining Kin Community, Miller served as founder and CEO of Penny Chic, an entertainment and style brand for young women.

 

BARKER, the NY-based advertising and digital agency, has named two new execs. Jason Spies, previously of Rogues United, will join the company as SVP and Chief Strategy Officer. In the new role, Spies will be tasked with generating new business. Meanwhile, photographer and social media marketer Ben Zank will join the company as Social Media Strategist. Both Zank and Spies will work out of the agency’s New York office.
 
The video advertising software company Tremor Video has named Paul Caine as Non-Executive Chairman of the company’s Board. Caine has served on Tremor’s Board as an independent director and member of its audit committee for over two years. Most recently, Caine served as Global Chief Revenue and Client Partnerships Officer of Bloomberg Media Group.
