IN THE NEWS
Just in time for “Monday Night Football”: Disney and Charter Communications reached a carriage agreement, ending the blackout of 18 Disney cable channels and eight ABC stations that began on August 31. “Our collective goal has always been to build an innovative model for the future,” said a statement from Disney CEO Bob Iger and Chris Winfrey, President CEO of Charter. “This deal recognizes both the continued value of linear television and the growing popularity of streaming services, while addressing the evolving needs of our consumers.’”
Part of the deal includes the Disney+ Basic ad-supported offering being provided to customers who purchase the Spectrum TV Select package. ESPN+ will be provided to Spectrum TV Select Plus subscribers; the ESPN flagship direct-to-consumer service will be made available to Spectrum TV Select subscribers upon launch. Charter will maintain flexibility to offer a range of video packages at varying price points based upon different customer’s viewing preferences. Charter also will use its distribution capabilities to offer Disney’s direct-to-consumer services to all of its customers, in particular its broadband-only customer base, for purchase at retail rates. These include Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, as well as The Disney Bundle.
Spectrum TV will have access to 19 networks from Disney, including Disney Channel, FX and the Nat Geo Channel, in addition to the full ESPN network suite, along with the ABC Owned Television Stations. No longer included in Spectrum TV video packages are Baby TV, Disney Junior, Disney XD, Freeform, FXM, FXX, Nat Geo Wild, and Nat Geo Mundo.
Hearst Television has pulled 37 of its local network affiliates in 27 markets off of Dish. “Demanding higher rates for the same entertainment and news just doesn’t make sense, especially as Hearst’s content is widely available on other platforms,” said Gary Schanman, EVP at Dish. That said, “Hearst is an important long-term partner for us, and we hope they’ll come to a reasonable agreement and restore their channels for our customers as quickly as possible,” added Schanman. In a message to subscribers, Hearst said, “We have made significant investments to deliver top tier programming to our viewers and Dish is seeking the right to carry our stations at below market rates, which is neither fair nor reasonable.”
Advertisers investing in CTV rose nearly 4% in 1Q23 versus the year prior, according to Beachfront Marketplace. The biggest gainers were for business, travel and family/parenting, with food/drink, health/fashion and style/fashion also showing gains. Roku’s share of CTV ad impressions dipped to 38.76% versus 39.22%, but remained well ahead of the competition. Set-top boxes’ share of impressions dropped to 12.9% versus 19.03% in 2Q22.
STRIKE UPDATES
The show will go on – and so will picketers. Season four of “The Drew Barrymore Show” is slated to premiere September 18, without writing work covered by the WGA strike. While most daytime talk shows are allowed to run because they do not employ writers who are part of the union, “Drew” an exception, and the WGA scheduled picketing outside the NYC studio for Monday and Tuesday of this week. “It has stayed off the air since the strike began on May 2nd but has now (unfortunately) decided to return without its writers,” said a guild spokesperson. Picketers handed out WGA pins – and at least two would-be audience members were escorted out for wearing them, a move resulting from “heightened security concerns” that Barrymore was unaware of, according to a show spokesperson.
Barrymore said she has decided to proceed with her show because it is “bigger than just me. I own this choice,” wrote Barrymore on Instagram. “We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind. We launched live in a global pandemic. Our show was built for sensitive times and has only functioned through what the real world is going through in real time.”
BIG TV Q&A
How can programmers reach Gen Z? Go straight to the source. Hali Anastopoulo, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at Get Me Out Productions – and a member of that desirable demo – will take part in the “Wherefore Art Thou, Gen Z?” discussion at the Cynopsis Big TV Conference, taking place September 27-28 in NYC. Here’s a preview of the insights she’ll offer.
What do you believe is the best way to market a new show to Gen Z?
As a member of Gen Z myself, I can confirm that we’re drawn in by online conversation and engagement. Gen Z viewers congregate around a multi-platform virtual water cooler that includes TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. We’re inspired by online content–memes, TikTok trends and suggested videos–to engage with our friends by watching streaming TV. We respond to a conversational experience. Gen Z is wary of traditional advertising formats that “feel” like an ad. The way to get our attention is through fun, additive content that leads to a real conversation with our peers.
What is the biggest misperception about the demo?
That Gen Z is a picky audience or doesn’t value long-form content on streaming. In my view, Gen Z is an audience with total openness for great content–whether it’s domestic or international, subtitled, scripted or unscripted, short or long-form. Gen Z will watch international formats with subtitles. We’ll watch and love classic reality formats that change up their casts each season, like “Love Is Blind” and “Survivor.” Research will tell you that Gen Z likes to watch YouTube, but that doesn’t mean we want to watch YouTube-style content on streaming TV. We love digging into great long-form storytelling, content that leads to a great conversation.
You have a reality TV show background. What type of reality content is most popular with Gen Z, and where do they watch?
When my team and I are developing shows to resonate with Gen Z, we gravitate toward a few formats. Escapist social experiment shows like “Bachelor in Paradise.” True crime storytelling. Shows built around online creators who have a strong base of loyal, engaged followers even if that means more niche (you can’t just add influencers to a show and hope for the best). As we develop concepts, we’re always working toward creating an active viewing experience for all viewers and for Gen Z in particular.
