08/30/17: Google unveils its augmented reality development kit

CynopsisDigital
Good morning. It’s Tuesday August 29, 2017 and this is your your first early morning Digital briefing!

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Inbound Marketing: Inbound marketing is a marketing technique that focuses on attracting customers using company-created internet content. The goal is to get potential customers to visit the company, instead of competing with other marketers for customers’ attention. Inbound marketing tends to use some combination of content marketing, search engine optimization, and social media marketing.

JUST IN…

YouTube has introduced its new desktop design to all users. Among other updates, the Google-owned video giant adjusted its logo so that it works better with different screen sizes. The redesign also features a dark mode with a black background, which is meant to be easier on the eyes during night-time viewing. YouTube has also made some new additions to its mobile app, including a “double tap” feature that lets users skip forward or backward by ten seconds. App users can also increase or decrease the playback speed of videos – a feature that was already available for web browsers. To take a peek at some of the new features, check out the Digital Spotlight section.

The NFL may have moved its Thursday Night Football streams from Twitter to Amazon, but the league certainly hasn’t severed its relationship with the former. Yesterday at 7 PM ET, the NFL debuted a half-hour live show on Twitter. Called #NFLBlitz, the show is hosted by NFL Network’s Erin Coscarelli and Mark Istook. Running four days a week throughout the 2017-2018 football season, it’ll feature news, analysis, highlights, and fantasy projections. The NFL also plans to use Twitter’s Periscope live-streaming service to deliver pre-game reports for the new series. In addition, Twitter is set to simulcast coverage of NFL Media’s Fantasy Gameday, which will run on NFL.com at 11 AM ET on Sundays. And the league also plans to continue producing other short-form content for Twitter, such as its existing Throwback Thursday #TBT segments.

OTT SVOD

Just how popular are the Fighting Irish? The NBC Sports Gold service is set to launch an internationally-targeted streaming package devoted entirely to Notre Dame college football. Called the Notre Dame Football Season Pass, it’ll be available in Canada, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K. The package will feature live and on-demand access to home games during the 2017 season. All told, it’ll cost $49.99. Consumers will also be able to purchase individual games for $9.99.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

Developers just got a look at ARCore, Google’s new augmented reality software development kit. Google says that intends to introduce ARCore to some 100 million phones in the not-too-distant future. The SDK lets developers build AR apps that overlay digital objects into a phone’s camera view. Google debuted several demos on Tuesday, including one app in which animated characters appear to pop up out of nowhere. ARCore is designed to run on most Android smartphones. At launch, Google will make it available on the Samsung Galaxy S8, as well as its own Pixel phones. It’s a good time for Google to jump into the space; competitors Apple and Facebook have both been working on their own AR efforts.

Apparently Pokemon Go wasn’t quite terrifying enough. AMC Networks and Next Games are preparing to launch The Walking Dead: Our World, a new location-based augmented reality that will plant bloodthirsty zombies into real-world settings. The game will be available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. A release date hasn’t been announced.

ADVERTISING

MediaRadar, a software firm that tracks and researches ad-sales data, is rolling out a new tool for publishers. Called the Power Prospecting Report, the product is designed to let users identify and categorize ad sales leads through MediaRadar’s proprietary data. Among other features, publishers can use the Power Prospecting Report to compile prospect lists using various filters, and can narrow lead lists to businesses occupying specific areas of product categories.

APPS + PLATFORMS

According to recent reports, Apple’s September 12 announcements will include an updated Apple TV that can stream video in 4K HD and high dynamic range (HDR). But according to the Wall Street Journal, the tech giant has been clashing with movie studios when it comes to pricing. Apple reportedly plans to sell 4K films for $20. (Currently, most new HD films sell through iTunes for $15.) According to the Journal, some Hollywood studios have been pushing Apple to charge at least $25 or $30 for 4K movies. Such a price increase would, of course, mean more revenue for the studios. This isn’t a new story; Apple has faced similar fights when it comes to film and music licensing. Ultimately, the tech company has tended to embrace the idea that lower prices lead to more purchases, and ultimately a healthier business model.

WhatsApp has begun verifying business accounts. The Facebook-owned messaging app has been doling out little green check marks to businesses whose contact info checks out. It’s just a pilot program to start, and only a small number of businesses are participating. Separately, it seems that WhatsApp may be preparing to launch a new standalone Android app devoted entirely to businesses. That’s according to code analysis from WABBetaInfo, a website that’s accurately uncovered soon-to-launch WhatsApp features before.

When you think of hamburgers, do you also think of crushing professional disappointment? If not, Burger King is here to help. The fast food chain is offering a free Whopper to anyone who just got fired – so long as they can prove it on LinkedIn. Just go to the professional networking site and type “I got fired. I want a free whopper. #WhopperSeverance”. Then BK will send you a link to register for a Whopper “severance package” in the mail. That package includes a free Burger King gift card. It’s a very strange promotion, but you can’t say it isn’t original.

MEASURING UP

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on FacebookTwitterGoogle+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Streaming Series (8/21/17 – 8/27/17)

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on FacebookTwitterGoogle+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

VidCon is getting a new CEO. Jim Louderback will take over as chief exec of the annual conference, which caters to video creators and their fans. Louderback has overseen VidCon’s “Industry Track” section for the past three years. He previously co-founded the online video network Revision3, which was acquired by Discovery back in 2012. (He continued holding the chief executive role at Revision3 until 2014.) At VidCon, Louderback replaces Hank Green. Green founded the conference, and had served as its CEO since 2010.

Jessica Powell, Google’s communications chief since 2012, is leaving the company. And she’s got a novel reason for doing so, according to a memo she sent to Google staffers: She’s heading to grad school. Powell officially steps down on September 1.
