Vimeo is expanding its content library with a slew of new and varied partnerships, including BFS Entertainment & Multimedia Limited, Drafthouse Films, Gaiam, Gravitas Ventures, Inception Media Group, MarVista Digital Entertainment (MVDE), and X-Treme Video. Each will contribute a number of catalog titles and will add new releases throughout each year of the agreement.
Pluto.TV already offers more than 100 channels of content and it is now announcing the addition of a few more from such producers as Complex Media, Fullscreen, Hitfix, POPSUGAR, and SpinMedia.
Disney’s Maker Studios has added another major video-game-related YouTube channel. Tubefilter reports that Diamond Minecart, a site focused on Minecraft with more than 3.4 million subscribers and 1.1 billion views, has joined Maker’s gaming hub Polaris. Maker now has partnerships with the three most-popular gaming YouTube channels: PewDiePie, Stampylongnose, and Minecart.
Pivot is aiming for higher education: Participant Media’s net is launching on Philo, bringing its programming slate to over a dozen universities. “As a network for Millennials, we are very excited to now be carried on Philo’s system which is made for our core audience,” said Stephanie Ruyle, Pivot’s EVP, distribution. Philo uses a university’s existing IP network and existing contracts with satellite providers to stream TV on an authenticated basis to student laptops, tablets, smartphones and TVs. Last week, Comcast announced a similar service, Xfinity On Campus.
Hulu landed exclusive streaming rights for Starz comedy Party Down. All episodes will be available starting Friday, August 29 on Hulu Plus, with the first five available for a limited time on Hulu.com.
TV may rule the advertising world right now, but new research from Magna Global says that digital advertising spend will surpass TV in 2017. The company expects the number to reach $72 billion, compared with TV’s $70.5 billion.
Edward Snowden hasn’t just affected the way the federal government goes about its business. His unveiling of state secrets has also left Americans more unwilling to share their own thoughts about the government online. A new Pew Research Center survey shows that approximately 86% of adults were “very” or “somewhat” willing to discuss the findings in person with family, friends or work colleagues or at public meetings, but only 43% said they would discuss the issues on Facebook, according to the Guardian. Also, only 41% of those adults would be willing to talk about surveillance in general on Twitter.
TiVo has had plenty of rough times in recent years, but the quarter that ended July 31 brought about $9.3 million in profit, or eight cents a share. That’s down from the same quarter a year earlier when TiVo brought in $268.9 million, but $276 million of that was from a settlement of a patent suit with Cisco and Motorola, Marketwatch notes. The quarterly profit was above TiVo’s expectation of $6 million and $9 million profit. Part of that increase was due to a 33% year-over-year increase in customers, ending the quarter with 4.8 million.
Now that the federal courts have put a stop to Aereo, others are trying to snap up those customers, including Granite Broadcasting Corp., which owns 14 broadcast stations. Granite has partnered with London tech firm Motive Television to launch “a new device and service that enables iOS and Android tablet users to watch broadcast TV without any kind of Internet connection whatsoever,” according to FierceCable.com. If the end-user places the “palm-size digital TV antenna, tuner, and digital recorder” within 100 feet of his or her tablet, it can receive local over-the-air broadcast signals. For now, Tablet TV is being beta-tested in San Francisco.
BuzzFeed has attracted a lot of money and eyeballs with its short viral videos, and has been reported, the company recently created BuzzFeed Motion Pictures to create “mid-form and long-form” video. To serve as advisors, BuzzFeed has brought in "Pulp Fiction” producer Michael Shamberg and actor/comedian Jordan Peele (of Key & Peele) to get things rolling. BuzzFeed is expected to have $100 million in revenue this year, the site notes.

Ad-agency clients are quite a lot more curious about digital video and streaming radio, according to new data from STRATA, a Chicago-based media buying and selling software firm. The survey shows that 45% of ad agencies are more interested in digital/online video for their client campaigns than during the second quarter a year ago, and streaming/online radio saw a 53% increase. Agencies also reported that 72% of their clients inquire about using YouTube to advertise. Hulu is second with 36%, a 32% jump from a year ago. However, the survey also showed that “many agencies still question the ROI of online video ads,” according to TheStreet.com.
Eyeview, a provider of personalized online video advertising solutions, has partnered with LiveRamp “to leverage data onboarding service capabilities and provide customers of both brands with the ability to create more meaningful interactions with consumers,” according to a company release.
Chromecast has two new apps, NPR One and Watch ABC. NPR One allows users to set preferences and the app will collect information from news-radio shows based on those. Watch ABC assists Android users in checking out ABC content on their mobile devices.
While plenty of apps are useful, there are more than a few consumers who aren’t happy with others. The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) sent letters to Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft, with requests to take down such “fat-shaming apps” as Fatify, Fatbooth, and Fat You from their sites and review the app-approval process, IGN reports.
Netflix is looking to help out other sites that are targets of hackers. The company has released three internal tools that it currently uses to figure out when hackers are potentially targeting them, according to PC World. Scumblr can “create custom searches of Google sites, Twitter and Facebook for users or keywords.” Workflowable organizes the findings while Sketchy takes an automatic screenshot of anything of interest. The three open-source tools have been released on GitHub.
