Disney’s multi-channel network Maker Studios signed on YouTube musician Lindsay Stirling – a web celeb with 5.2 million subscribers on her main channel and 337,000 subs on her behind-the-scenes channel. Maker will manage her channels and advertising along with her social platforms. Previously, Stirling worked with MCN Fullscreen. Stirling released her first album in 2012, with the track “Crystalize” hitting more than 100 million views on YT.

YouTube darlings Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart’s summer trip web series, HeyUSA, will premiere on Conde Nast Entertainment’s The Scene. The producer of the show, Astronauts Wanted, released footage and bloopers from HeyUSA to drum up excitement, which did the trick – its social content reeled in more than six million views on YT and three million engagements on social platforms. The series will premiere on the digital hub on Oct. 15. 
 
Artist John Legend is currently casting a new dance movie, Breaking Through, to exclusively premiere on YouTube dance MCN DanceOn. Dancers can submit videos through YT; those chosen will appear on the drama, taped during live performance DanceOn Spotlight: The Ultimate Dance Experience Event in LA on Aug. 29. DanceOn has more than ten million subscribers and more than two billion overall views.
 
Fox Sports
has partnered with YouTube Space LA to create a daily web series focusing on breaking sports news, called @TheBuzzer. Entertainment Tonight and The Insider alum Nicole Dabeau will host the show, expected to produce ten videos a day. @TheBuzzer, quietly launched earlier this summer, averages 500,000 views per week with more than 40 percent of visitors coming from social media, according to Fox Sports. The videos are posted to the network’s YT channel, and at FoxSports.com

CONTENT MEDIA

 
PBS Digital Studios debuted its first scripted series Frankenstein, MD on its YouTube channel yesterday. The show is a multiplatform version of the classic Mary Shelley novel, but Frankenstein is a woman named Victoria. The character will also have a blog, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram account throughout the series.
 
Seth Meyers
’ animated series The Awesomes was renewed by Hulu for a third season. The Awesomes follow the origins of superhero team that become less powerful when some members leave.
 
MTV
is pushing the multiscreen experience for this year’s Video Music Awards events, with nominees announced via SnapChat and eight social influencers, including JennXPenn, King Bach and Rebecca Black, enlisted to co-create content around the show across social media. The show will be broadcast on Aug. 24.

The pilot for upcoming ABC comedy Selfie is available on http://www.hulu.com/selfie, ahead of its premiere on Tuesday, September 30 at 8p. Series focuses on a social media star who needs to rebrand her reputation after a workplace slip.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS
 

The Xbox One added Reddit and MTV apps, and updated the Twitch app. The ReddX lets users quickly upvote or downvote Reddit submissions without a PC, and customize the main page and setup. The MTV app offers full episodes, sneak peeks and more for users with a pay-TV subscription. Twitch’s most notable new feature is a “watch with friends” option.

The company known for its set-top box, Roku, is getting into the Smart TV biz. The company announced it’s prepping to launch a TV product line with its streaming service integrated. The TVs will launch later this month and early September, with prices ranging from $229 to $649.

 
 
MOBILE ADVERTISING
 

Mobile video ads that last ten seconds are twice as effective as mobile video ads lasting 20 seconds, according to a study from mobile video ad company Vdopia. Although research showed ten-second ads are completed and clicked-through the most, 20-second and 30-second versions still account for three-quarters of entertainment brands’ mobile video ad spend. “This may be attributed to marketers re-purposing TV ads for mobile – a viable solution if the ad can be shortened by removing any secondary messaging and adding an interactivity element,” said Vdopia CEO Saurabh Bhatia.
 
 

AD PLATFORMS
 

Analytics and software enterprise Acxicom announced the launch of MyAcxiomPartner.com to help marketers to build and target multichannel advertising campaigns. Said Unique Two Limousine CEO Marcello Bustamante in the company’s release, “We can now build our own creative, launch ads and build out social and mobile campaigns using fewer marketing dollars than are usually associated with a multichannel campaign.”

Former president and founder of OgilvyEntertainment Doug Scott has joined WME IMG as its new Executive Vice President of Marketing and Brand Solutions

hired Jayme Beth Frieder in the newly created role of Senior Director of Sales. She was most recently the Director of the Advertiser Solutions Group at Collective.
 
The Weather Channel tapped Nora Zimmett to serve as as Senior Vice President of Live Programming. Zimmett was previously co-creator and Executive Producer of CNN’s New Day Weekend and Smerconish.
