Inventory: Inventory refers to the number of advertisements, or amount of ad space, that a publisher has available to sell to an advertiser. When it comes to mobile ad tech, inventory is frequently valued in terms of impressions that a publisher can deliver to an advertiser.

AT&T
has consolidated its digital, media, and creative accounts – and the consolidated account, worth about $3 billion, has gone to Omnicom. Omnicom will now take on most of AT&T’s creative, digital, data, and analytics in the U.S., as well as Mexico. Omnicom’s BBDO will head up creative (including brand work for both DirecTV and AT&T). And Omnicom’s Hearts & Science will serve as AT&T’s media agency. Omnicom beat out WPP for the account.
 
Facebook is once again changing its Newsfeed algorithm. The new algorithm is designed to show users a greater number of “informative” stories. “With this update, we are creating a new ranking signal to predict what is most informative to you, so those stories appear higher in your feed,” the company wrote in a blog post. “First, we look at the stories that people tell us they find informative. People from our Feed Quality Program” – a new crowdsourced global survey of tens of thousands of people per day – “look at each story in their feed and rank it on a scale of one to five – one being ‘really not informative’ and five being ‘really informative.’” Facebook then combines this signal with how relevant the story might be to users personally, the post adds. The company says that what qualifies as an “informative” story is different for each user, and can change over time.

The ad tech and multi-channel media company Brightcom announced integrations with GeoEdge (a specialist in ad verification, transparency, and malware protection) and Forensiq (an anti-fraud specialist). Brightcom will send all ad traffic to Forensiq to be evaluated for fraud. And Brightcom will use GeoEdge’s ad security and verification process to to enhance visibility and fight against malware.

POLICY+ RULINGS
 

Kim Dotcom, the infamous founder of the piracy site Megaupload, isn’t getting richer anytime soon. In a 2-1 ruling, a three-judge panel of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals held that federal courts can continue to freeze the tens of millions of dollars that Dotcom, as well as others responsible for Megaupload, currently have in foreign banks. Dotcom had argued that U.S. federal courts lacked the jurisdiction to continue freezing his assets. The Megaupload founder has other problems to worry about has well: Since 2012, he’s been fighting U.S. efforts to extradite him from New Zealand.

 

A federal judge has overturned the murder conviction of Brendan Dassey, one of the two main subjects of Netflix docu-series Making a Murderer. The decision can still be appealed. If prosecutors don’t attempt to retry him, Dassey will be released from prison in 90 days. A second season of the Netflix series – set to focus on the appeals process of Dassey and his uncle, Steven Avery – had already been greenlit before the ruling. “As we have done for the past 10 years, we will continue to document the story as it unfolds, and follow it wherever it may lead,” said Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, who direct and executive produce Making a Murderer, in a statement.

The millennial and Gen Z-oriented media brand What’s Trending announced that it will be launching a new division devoted to developing live programming. What’s Trending has already implemented a live programming schedule on its Live.ly account. In addition, the company says it will launch a weekly advice call-in show, as well as other live programming on both live.ly and musical.ly. And What’s Trending says it will also work with brands and creators to “maximize” live video opportunities on social platforms such as Facebook and live.ly, providing partners with tools and strategies to increase engagement and audience size, as well as develop strategic partnerships and sponsorship opportunities.

 
 
RESEARCH

According to SNL Kagan, cord-cutting and cord-shaving will continue to wear away at the cable industry over the next ten years. The media analytics firm finds that cable TV revenue will drop 4.7% by 2026. That represents a $2.7 billion dip for cable TV providers like Charter Communications and Comcast, from $57.7 to $55.0 billion. Still, this isn’t all bad news for cable providers – in fact, it may be a net positive. SNL Kagan also finds that, over the same time period, those companies will take in an additional $11 billion due to a 13% increase in broadband subscriptions.
