Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 14, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Vimeo
is dipping into YouTube’s talent pool in a new distribution deal with three major creators: Joe Graceffa, Taryn Southern and comicbookgirl19. Graceffa will debut a full-length version of his web series Storytellers, Southern is working on a feature film and comicbookgirl19 is distributing her long-form reviews on the platform. The biggest draw for these creators? As opposed to YT’s steep 45 percent cut of profits, Vimeo pulls in just ten percent.

SendtoNews signed a multi-year agreement with MLB Advanced Media to syndicate MLB and MiLB (minor league baseball) short-form digital content. SendtoNews will have distribution rights to MLB game highlights, interviews, top plays and video from local news sites. “For advertisers, this means an opportunity to surround their brands around America’s favorite pastime,” SendtoNews CEO Greg Bobolo told Cynopsis. “There are more than 2,000 games per season for MLB alone, and we estimate the deal with push us over the 100 million mark in terms of viewership.”

CONTENT MEDIA

The Veronica Mars web series first announced in January will hit CW Seed on Sept. 15. The show, Play It Again, Dick, will reunite the entire cast in eight episodes, and will focus on actor Ryan Hansen, who played Dick Casablancas. However, the series will take on a new twist, with the actors playing fictional versions of themselves, creating a web series as they portray the characters. The creator, Rob Thomas, revived the series with a $.48 million Kickstarter in a film that hit theatres this past March.

Univision’s Flama premiered the first three episodes of its new scripted comedy series The Bodega. The show features two lazy brothers forced to work at their father’s NYC store. Additional episodes will be released every Wednesday at TheFlama.com.

Michael Jackson
is still breaking records. Last night, he became the first artist to release a music video exclusively on Twitter. Jackson Estate and Epic Records unleashed the video for the single, A Place With No Name (originally recorded in 1998), on the King of Pop’s Twitter handle. The video was created by award-winning director Samuel Bayer (Nirvana and Rolling Stones), and includes outtakes and behind-the-scene footage from the Jackson’s In The Closet production in 1992.

ADVERTISING

Facebook unveiled a new cross-device reporting feature for its ad product, to allow marketers to find where conversations happen on mobile devices and desktops. The ad performance is broken down further to tablets versus smartphones as well as brands, i.e. iPhone versus Samsung. Adweek reports One Kings Lane tested the new tool and saw “unprecedented insights into the cross-device shopping behavior of our customers.”

Honda
’s American division Acura will promote its latest sedan in a digital-heavy campaign, with an emphasis on Facebook. Ad Age reports Acura will run “road block” videos to reach 100 percent of users, and do major takeovers on sites like Yahoo and MSN. The campaign is also dipping into Hulu and Crackle – no surprise there, since the automaker has been the exclusive sponsor of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee on Crackle. Spots for the new car will start rolling out on Aug. 17.

If you’ve got happy news, weddings, babies, engagements you’d like shared with your industry colleagues for a new feature going up soon on our web site, send to [email protected].

RESEARCH

More than 90 percent of buyers are using programmatic, according to a new study from AOL Platforms. The research surveyed senior executives at 25 major U.S. brands, 96 agencies and 56 publishers from May to June 2014 and found:

  • 76 percent of advertisers buy programmatically for display
  • 56 percent for mobile
  • 48 percent for video ads
  • 32 percent for search
  • 24 percent for social
  • 13 percent for TV

From agencies:

  • 86 percent are buy programmatically for display
  • 60 percent for mobile and video
  • 34 percent for social
  • 24 percent for search
  • 7 percent for TV

AOL concluded, “87 percent of brands and agencies plan to increase spend in display and video up to 50 percent in the next year.”

Nothing beats a big small screen, according to research commissioned by BroadStream Systems. Despite the preponderance of options for TV viewing on PCs, tablets and smartphones, the vast majority of Americans polled said they prefer to watch television shows…on a television, according to a survey by market research firm YouGov that found 82 percent of respondents regularly use their TV set for live TV viewing, versus 14 percent who use a laptop, 10 percent who use a desktop, 8 percent who use a mobile phone and 7 percent a tablet. The survey also showed 64 percent of viewers like to watch their favorite shows in groups – no easy task on a smartphone.
